I would like to say thank you for her unwavering encouragement, advice, answers, and laughter, and for always making me consider: What would Agrippina do? A thousand more thanks to all the other teachers from whom I have had the honor and joy of learning, at Duke and beyond. I am so grateful for your wisdom and kindness over the years and feel lucky to graduate having been taught by all of you. My research would have been incomplete without the assistance of the special collections libraries and librarians I turned to in the past year. Thank you to the librarians at the Beinecke and Vatican Film Libraries, and of course, to everyone in the Duke Libraries. I could not have done this without you! I should note that I am writing these final pages not in Perkins Library or my campus dormitory, but in self-isolation in my childhood bedroom.

  • France Invades the 1961 White House
France Invades the 1961 White House Christopher Early East Carolina University Visual Arts and Design Faculty Mentor Hunt McKinnon East Carolina University Throughout its history, America‟s White House has undergone many changes through its many administrations. While a select few presidents worked to improve it, most others merely neglected it. No one, however, worked harder in restoring the White House interior than Jacqueline Kennedy, wife of President John F. Kennedy, who occupied the Executive Mansion from January 1961 until November 1963. Soon after Kennedy‟s election to the presidency in November 1960, a pregnant Jacqueline Kennedy visited the White House, as per protocol, and was given a tour of her soon-to-be-home by the outgoing First Lady, Mamie Eisenhower. “Jackie‟s first visit to the White House was her coming-out party as the next first lady.” 1 After viewing the condition of the White House, Mrs. Kennedy was appalled by its drab furniture and design. She was shocked that the White House interior, that of America‟s preeminent home, had been so woefully decorated. To her, it was nothing short of a national disgrace. Soon after taking up residence in the White House, both the President and his First Lady were struck by how depressing, drab, and tasteless the home appeared. Furniture in rooms did not match with each other, nor did paintings adorning the walls. There were no unifying themes in individual rooms or the mansion as a whole. “To her dismay she found the upstairs family quarters decorated with what she called „early Statler‟; it was so cheerless and undistinguished it wasn‟t even worthy of a second-class hotel.

Fitzpatrick DOC | *audiobook | ebooks | Download PDF | ePub 13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. A great way to introduce yourself to a group who made literary historyBy Greg HatfieldIt seems my entire life has been connected to the Algonquin Round Table. When I first discovered Harpo Marx, as a youngster, it led me to his autobiography, Harpo Speaks, where I then learned about the Round Table. Alexander Woollcott, George S. Kaufman, Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley, Franklin P. Adams, Edna Ferber, Heywood Broun, and all the rest who made up the Vicious Circle, became an obsession to me and I had to learn about their lives and, more importantly, their work.Kevin Fitzpatrick has done a remarkable job with this book, putting the group into a historical perspective, and giving the reader a terrific overview of what made the Algonquin Round Table unique and worthy of your time. They were the leading writers and critics of the 1920's, who really did enjoy one another's company, meeting practically every day for lunch for ten years at the Algonquin Hotel.Fitzpatrick says, in one section, that there isn't a day, in this modern era, where someone, somewhere, mentions one of the group in a glowing context (I'm paraphrasing here). The fact remains that the work of Kaufman, Mrs.

Bulletin of the JSME Vol.10, No.2, 2015 Journal of Fluid Science and Technology Performance of wing sail with multi element by two- dimensional wind tunnel investigations Hiroyuki FURUKAWA*, Alexander W. BLAKELEY **, Richard G.J. FLAY ** and Peter J. RICHARDS ** * Department of Mechanical Engineering, Meijo University 1-501 Shiogamaguchi, Tenpaku-ku, Nagoya 468-8502, Japan E-mail: [email protected] **Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Auckland 314-390 Khyber Pass Road, Auckland, New Zealand Received 30 April 2015 Abstract Following the 33rd America's Cup which featured a trimaran versus a catamaran, and the recent 34th America's Cup in 2013 featuring AC72 catamarans with multi-element wing sail yachts sailing at unprecedented speeds, interest in wing sail technology has increased substantially. Unfortunately there is currently very little open peer- reviewed literature available witha focus on multi-element wing design for yachts. The limited available literature focuses primarily on the structures of wings and their control, rather than on the aerodynamic design. While there is substantial available literature on the aerodynamic properties of aircraft wings, the differences in the flow domains between aeroplanes and yachts is significant. A yacht sail will operate in a Reynolds number range of 0.2 to 8 million while aircraft operate regularly in excess of 10 million. Furthermore, yachts operate in the turbulent atmospheric boundary layer and require high maximum lift coefficients at many apparent wind angles, and minimising drag is not so critical. This paper reviews the literature onwing sail design for high performance yachts and discusses the results of wind tunnel testing at the Yacht Research Unit at the University of Auckland.

  • Diversity Report 2010 1 Diversity Report 2010 Literary Translation in Current European Book Markets
Diversity Report 2010 1 Diversity Report 2010 Literary Translation in Current European Book Markets. An analysis of authors, languages, and flows. Written by Miha Kovač and Rüdiger Wischenbart, with Jennifer Jursitzky and Sabine Kaldonek, and additional research by Julia Coufal. www.wischenbart.com/DiversityReport2010 Contact: [email protected] 2 Executive Summary The Diversity Report 2010, building on previous research presented in the respective reports of 2008 and 2009, surveys and analyzes 187 mostly European authors of contemporary fiction concerning translations of their works in 14 European languages and book markets. The goal of this study is to develop a more structured, data-based understanding of the patterns and driving forces of the translation markets across Europe. The key questions include the following: What characterizes the writers who succeed particularly well at being picked up by scouts, agents, and publishers for translation? Are patterns recognizable in the writers’ working biographies or their cultural background, the language in which a work is initially written, or the target languages most open for new voices? What forces shape a well-established literary career internationally? What channels and platforms are most helpful, or critical, for starting a path in translation? How do translations spread? The Diversity Report 2010 argues that translated books reflect a broad diversity of authors and styles, languages and career paths. We have confirmed, as a trend with great momentum, that the few authors and books at the very top, in terms of sales and recognition, expand their share of the overall reading markets with remarkable vigor. Not only are the real global stars to be counted on not very many fingers.
