Yet, if the 1980s is commonly cited as decade of ‘black cultural renaissance’ in Britain, the 1990s was the decade in which a new generation of artists of Chinese descent emerged on the British cultural landscape, across the visual arts, theatre and performing arts, music and film. -

Oxford DNB: January 2020 Welcome to the fifty-ninth update of the Oxford DNB, which adds biographies of 228 individuals who died in the year 2016 (it also includes three subjects who died before 2016, and who have been included with new entries). Of these, the earliest born is the author E.R. Braithwaite (1912-2016) and the latest born is the geriatrician and campaigner for compassionate care in health services, Kate Granger (1981- 2016). Braithwaite is one of nine centenarians included in this update, and Granger one of sixteen new subjects born after the Second World War. The vast majority (165, or 72%) were born in the 1920s and 1930s. Fifty-one of the new subjects who died in 2016 (or just under 23% of the cohort) are women. From January 2020, the Oxford DNB offers biographies of 63,693 men and women who have shaped the British past, contained in 61,411 articles. 11,773 biographies include a portrait image of the subject—researched in partnership with the National Portrait Gallery, London. As ever, we have a free selection of these new entries, together with a full list of the new biographies. The complete dictionary is available, free, in most public libraries in the UK. Libraries offer 'remote access' that enables you to log in at any time at home (or anywhere you have internet access). Very little scholarly attention has been paid to televisual representations of British Chinese identities, despite the British Chinese constituting one of the larger and fastest growing ethnic minority groups within contemporary Britain. Informed by an understanding of the complexity of the term ‘British Chinese’, this article explores the representation of British Chinese identities in British television drama. Despite the long-standing absence and invisibility of such identities in British television, as perceived within the popular imagination in Britain and British Chinese discourses, the article finds that a larger number of British Chinese actors have found notable employment in British television than is commonly acknowledged or remembered within the popular imagination. -

Dear Colleagues, Writers and directors, working in the kind of collaboration that dignifies both of our profes- sions, stand together once again in our official identities as the Writers Guild of America, west and the Directors Guild of America, to present the Preston Sturges Award in recognition of a career achievement in filmmaking. Our honoree is Blake Edwards, the third artist to be so selected, preceded by Richard Brooks and Billy Wilder. How proud we are to have been in their presence and to be working at the same crafts! Somewhere, Preston Sturges is smiling; surely Blake Edwards is a talent after his own heart. Consider Blake's body of work, outlined in detail elsewhere in this publication. It is the journey of an instinctive artist learning his craft. A journey through the latter days of the legendary Hollywood studio system, writing low-budget westerns and romantic comedies, then directing his own scripts. Then the gradual development of a personal style, a "touch." Then, in 1963, his script (with Maurice Richlin) and his direction of The Pink Panther,and film buffs throughout the world knew that they had another stylist to enjoy. (Remember the spinning globe of the earth, and Inspector Clouseau inadvertently touching it, and spinning himself right to the floor?) After that, Blake's work, unaffected by the storytelling fads of the moment, showed the maturing of a master. He developed into one of those rare creative minds who holds true to his unique talent and to the cinematic tradition of the great era of visual comedy of Chaplin, Keaton and Harold Lloyd, and later, Preston Sturges himself. -
War Cinema– Or How British Films Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Affluent Society
1 THE PROFESSIONAL OFFICER CLASS IN POST- WAR CINEMA– OR HOW BRITISH FILMS LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE AFFLUENT SOCIETY A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Andrew Roberts College of Business, Arts and Social Sciences of Brunel University 22nd September2014 2 ABSTRACT My central argument is that mainstream British cinema of the 1951 – 1965 period marked the end of the paternalism, as exemplified by a professional ‘officer class’, as consumerism gradually came to be perceived as the norm as opposed to a post-war enemy. The starting point is 1951, the year of the Conservative victory in the General Election and a time which most films were still locally funded. The closing point is 1965, by which point the vast majority of British films were funded by the USA and often featured a youthful and proudly affluent hero. Thus, this fourteen year describes how British cinema moved away from the People as Hero guided by middle class professionals in the face of consumerism. Over the course of this work, I will analyse the creation of the archetypes of post-war films and detail how the impact of consumerism and increased Hollywood involvement in the UK film industry affected their personae. However, parallel with this apparently linear process were those films that questioned or attacked the wartime consensus model. As memories of the war receded, and the Rank/ABPC studio model collapsed, there was an increasing sense of deracination across a variety of popular British cinematic genres. From the beginning of our period there is a number films that infer that the “Myth of the Blitz”, as developed in a cinematic sense, was just that and our period ends with films that convey a sense of a fragmenting society. -

Au commencement La panthère rose est le protagoniste et personnage principal d'une série de dessins animés créée par Friz Freleng en 1964 pour la Mirisch Company et distribués par United Artists. Le personnage est apparu pour la première fois à l'écran pendant les génériques de début et de fin du film de 1963, La 1 Panthère rose. Une caricature de l'inspecteur Clouseau, héros des films originaux, fut, de 1965 à 1969, la vedette d'une autre série de dessins animés, créée également par Freleng, et intitulée The Inspector. La panthère rose évolue dans un monde parfois absurde et surréaliste. Dans ce registre, un des chefs-d'œuvre de la série est le court métrage Psychedelic Pink (voir dans la liste des épisodes : La Panthère Psychédélique), qui la montre franchissant la porte d'un univers onirique, où elle se 2 retrouve entourée d'énormes lettres de l'alphabet ; elle utilise un J pour jouer au golf (la balle de golf est le point d'un i), puis elle est mise en joue par son adversaire, le petit bonhomme moustachu (voir plus bas) qui se sert d'un F renversé comme d'un fusil. Le rôle muet de la panthère rose lui donne, comme à un mime, une portée universelle. Elle est en général calme et flegmatique, mais parfois, elle se rappelle qu'elle est panthère et se bagarre : elle se défend contre un fantôme et un squelette dans 3 Panique en rose (Pink Panic), lutte pour un os avec ses contemporains préhistoriques dans La Panthère à l'âge de pierre (Extinct Pink), et se bat avec un démonstrateur publicitaire dans La Panthère au supermarché (Supermarket Pink).
