Changes in vegetation structure can alter the physical habitat structure, thermal environment, and food available to arthropods, which play an important role in the structure and functioning of Arctic ecosystems. Not only do they provide key ecosystem services such as pollination and nutrient cycling, they are an essential food source for migratory birds. In this study I examined the relationships between the abundance, diversity, and community composition of arthropods and the height and cover of several shrub species across a tundra-shrub gradient in northwestern Alaska. To characterize nestling diet of common passerines that occupy this gradient, I used next-generation sequencing of fecal matter. Willow cover was strongly and consistently associated with abundance and biomass of arthropods and significant shifts in arthropod community composition and diversity. -

1 New early Eocene Siricomorpha (Hymenoptera: Symphyta: Pamphiliidae, Siricidae, Cephidae) from the Okanagan Highlands, western North America S. Bruce Archibald,1 Alexandr P. Rasnitsyn Abstract—We describe three new genera and four new species (three named) of siricomorph sawflies (Hymenoptera: Symphyta) from the Ypresian (early Eocene) Okanagan Highlands: Pamphiliidae, Ulteramus republicensis new genus, new species from Republic, Washington, United States of America; Siricidae, Ypresiosirex orthosemos new genus, new species from McAbee, British Columbia, Canada; and Cephidae, Cuspilongus cachecreekensis new genus, new species from McAbee and another cephid treated as Cephinae species A from Horsefly River, British Columbia, Canada. These are the only currently established occurrences of any siricomorph family in the Ypresian. We treat the undescribed new siricoid from the Cretaceous Crato Formation of Brazil as belonging to the Pseudosiricidae, not Siricidae, and agree with various authors that the Ypresian Megapterites mirabilis Cockerell is an ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). The Miocene species Cephites oeningensis Heer and C. fragilis Heer, assigned to the Cephidae over a century and a half ago, are also ants. Many of the host plants that siricomporphs feed upon today first appeared in the Eocene, a number of these in the Okanagan Highlands in particular. The Okanagan Highlands sites where these wasps were found also had upper microthermal mean annual temperatures as are overwhelmingly preferred by most modern siricomorphs, but were uncommon -

AGENDA: Alaska International Airports System (AIAS) and Statewide Aviation Update: Deputy Commissioner Luiken provided an overview of the AIAS. Marketing efforts of the Anchorage Airport include: 1. Plans to hire two key positions - marketing and air service development. 2. Interview with Supply Chain Management for an online story 3. Air Cargo Summit – International carriers invited to meet with representative from U.S. DOT to better understand the unique cargo transfer rights available in Alaska and to review fuel supply issues. The State is conducting a study to review fuel storage and all aspects of fuel availability at the international airports. Public Comment: Junior Johnson, Unalakleet Airport Manager expressed concern over Emmonak Airport not having a village contractor. -

Macrolepidoptera Inventory of the Chilcotin District Aud I. Fischer – Biologist Jon H. Shepard - Research Scientist and Crispin S. Guppy – Research Scientist January 31, 2000 2 Abstract This study was undertaken to learn more of the distribution, status and habitat requirements of B.C. macrolepidoptera (butterflies and the larger moths), the group of insects given the highest priority by the BC Environment Conservation Center. The study was conducted in the Chilcotin District near Williams Lake and Riske Creek in central B.C. The study area contains a wide variety of habitats, including rare habitat types that elsewhere occur only in the Lillooet-Lytton area of the Fraser Canyon and, in some cases, the Southern Interior. Specimens were collected with light traps and by aerial net. A total of 538 species of macrolepidoptera were identified during the two years of the project, which is 96% of the estimated total number of species in the study area. There were 29,689 specimens collected, and 9,988 records of the number of specimens of each species captured on each date at each sample site. A list of the species recorded from the Chilcotin is provided, with a summary of provincial and global distributions. The habitats, at site series level as TEM mapped, are provided for each sample. A subset of the data was provided to the Ministry of Forests (Research Section, Williams Lake) for use in a Flamulated Owl study. A voucher collection of 2,526 moth and butterfly specimens was deposited in the Royal BC Museum. There were 25 species that are rare in BC, with most known only from the Riske Creek area. -

Birch Defoliator Yukon Forest Health — Forest insect and disease 4 Energy, Mines and Resources Forest Management Branch Introduction The birch leafminer (Fenusa pusilla), amber-marked birch leafminer (Profenusa thomsoni), birch leaf skeletonizer (Bucculatrix canadensisella) and the birch-aspen leafroller (Epinotia solandriana) are defoliators of white birch (Betula papyrifera) in North America. Of the four, only the Bucculatrix is native to North America, but it is not currently found in Yukon. The other three species, as invasives, pose a far greater threat to native trees because their natural enemies in the form of predators, parasites and diseases are absent here. The birch leafminer was accidently introduced from Europe in 1923 and is now widely distributed in Canada, Alaska and the northern United States, though it has not yet been found in Yukon. The amber-marked birch leafminer was first described in Quebec in 1959 but is now found throughout Canada, the northern contiguous U.S., and Alaska. The amber-marked birch leafminer has proven to be, by far, the more damaging of the two species. Both species are of the blotch mining type as opposed to the skeletonizing Bucculatrix and the leafrolling Epinotia. Amber-marked leafminer damage is typically found along road systems. Infestations along roadsides are often greater in areas of high traffic, or where parked cars are common, suggesting that this pest will hitchhike on vehicles. It was first identified in Anchorage, Alaska in 1996 and has since spread widely to other communities. In areas of Alaska, efforts to control the spread of the amber-marked birch leafminer have been underway since 2003 with the release of parasitic wasps (Lathrolestes spp.). -
