Energy Conservation & Demand Management Plan 5 Year Planning Horizon July 2019 – July 2024 Energy Conservation and Demand Management Plan Forward Osler is committed to supporting the exceptional care we deliver with efficient and sustainable facilities which minimize our carbon footprint and contribute to the health and wellness of our community. While we reflect with pride on our achievements in sustainability to date, we are not satisfied as we acknowledge the opportunities yet to be realized. This Energy Conservation and Demand Management Plan (ECDM) provides renewed guidance and focus for sustainability at Osler as we look to the opportunities before us. Osler supports one of the fastest growing regions in Ontario and the demand for our services is ever growing. This growth drives the need for new facilities to support the growing demand and, while the addition of facilities inherently grow our physical footprint, Osler has committed to leverage the opportunity of new facilities to dilute our energy intensity through innovative and sustainable designs. The opening of Peel Memorial added 600,000 sq.ft. to our physical footprint, while at same time, reduced our energy intensity by 30%. This achievement results from a relentless focus on sustainability and Osler will continue to focus on the opportunities presented by redevelopment to dilute our energy intensity and green our aggregate footprint with the development of Peel Phase 2 over the next several years. While Osler benefits from occupying relatively new healthcare real estate, the complexities of multiple P3 sites have posed obstacles on our journey along our sustainability roadmap. As we strive to continuously optimize our facilities operations, our renewed ECDM seeks to transcend the constraints of the P3 environment through leveraging our partners to drive energy efficiency and sustainability. Our renewed plan seeks to formalize user engagement through the establishment of a Green Team, a collaborative of sustainability champions to leverage the power of networks further engrain sustainability into our culture and consciousness. The success of this plan will be driven by the combination of incessant optimism for the possible and perpetual dissatisfaction with the status quo and we are excited to launch our 2019-2024 ECDM. John Marshman Executive Director, Facilities Operations William Osler Health System Page| 2 Energy Conservation and Demand Management Plan Executive Summary This Energy Conservation and Demand Management (ECDM) Plan provides renewed guidance and focus for William Osler Health System’s (Osler) 2019 Strategic Energy Management Plan. This ECDM Plan outlines specific actions and measures that will promote energy conservation and stewardship of the environment to 2024. This ECDM Plan will provide future projections of energy consumption, review past conservation measures, and chart the path of planned energy conservation measures. In keeping with our focus on sustainability. efficiency, respect for our environment, and financial responsibility, this ECDM Plan outlines how we will reduce overall energy consumption, operating costs and greenhouse gas emissions. By following the measures outlined in this document, we will be able to better support the compassionate care we deliver and better contribute to the health and wellness of our community. This ECDM Plan is written in accordance with sections 4, 5, and 6 of the recently amended Electricity Act, 1998, O. Reg. 507/18. Through our past energy conservation and demand initiatives, we have achieved the following results: 3,865,941 m3 reduction in natural gas use since 2013 24 % reduction in the organization’s total energy intensity since 2013 Today, utility and energy related costs are a significant part of overall operating costs. In 2018: Our organizations Energy Use Index (EUI) was 58 ekWh/ft2 Our total energy-related emissions equaled 19,787 tCO2e To obtain full value from energy management activities, Osler will take a strategic approach to fully integrate energy management into its business decision-making, policies and operating procedures. This active management of energy-related costs and risks will provide a significant economic return and will support other key organizational objectives. With this prominent focus on energy management, Osler can expect to achieve the following goals and targets by 2024: 18 % reduction in electricity consumption 12 % reduction in natural gas consumption 8% tCO2e carbon equivalent emissions 13% reduction in total EUI ekWh/ft2 Continue reviewing opportunities for further energy conservation and GHG reduction This ECDM is intended to be a living document and will be updated annually to reflect the evolution of the redevelopment landscape, the energy commodity market, and the organization’s strategic priorities.
