Description of community agency/organization:

William Osler Health System is a full service hospital system that serves 1.3 million residences of Brampton, North Etobicoke and surrounding communities. Osler’s Emergency departments are among the busiest in Ontario and its’ labour and delivery program is one of the largest in Canada.

Osler offers a wide variety of volunteer service areas, from greeting visitors to feeding palliative care patients (age and availability restrictions applies).

Position title:

Volunteer (over 100+ service areas available)

What will the student do:

• Greet and assist individuals (visitors, patients, staff) to their destinations • Assist by answering general questions about the hospital • Provide way-finding support to patients, visitors and staff • Encourage use of hand sanitizer in compliance with Osler’s infection control policies to minimize spread of infection • Assist clinicians in maintaining/optimizing patient flow and may act as liaison between patients and staff to ensure concerns are addressed • In limited areas available to high school students, provide specific health education to patients; facilitate patient in rehabilitation treatment sessions.

Skills required:

• Excellent customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills • Fluent in English both verbal and written, additional languages may be beneficial • Ability to stay calm in a busy, often stressful environment (for example traumatic, emotional, and/or crisis situation) • Discreet, empathetic behavior and ability to exercise diplomacy in talking to patients, patient’s family and staff • Physically able to stand for long periods, some light lifting, pushing patients in wheelchairs may be required • Must be dependable and committed to scheduled shifts, or provide alternative availability to substitute absences • A minimum time commitment of one 2-4 hour shift per week for six-eight months or 60 hours is required • Zero-tolerance for breach of confidentiality • Must adhere to all Osler policies including proof of immunization according to Public Hospital Act and willingness to complete police check

Skills student will learn:

• Effective teamwork with fellow volunteers, staff, clinicians, and physicians • Work collaboratively in an intergenerational team • Be exposure to various operations of the hospital and/or patient flow processes • Network with other students with similar interests to have a career in health care • Network with professional staff, observe their duties and how they contribute to patient-centred care in a fast-paced healthcare facility • Excel in customer service and patient-centred approaches to provide service excellence for patients and their families

Length of time required:

• A minimum of 3 hours per week, for 6-8 months (or until 60 hours has been attained)

What is the registration deadline for volunteer positions? (If the volunteer position is a year-round opportunity, organizations will need to resubmit every September)

• Year round, but for our summer volunteer program, high school applications are due in April.
