SUPPORTING FILMMAKERS AT EVERY STEP

LAURA WATERS HINSON

Laura is an MPI-supported filmmaker and the founder of Image Bearer Pictures, an award-winning documentary production company in Washington, D.C.

Her films have been broadcast on PBS and reached audiences in universities, civic and religious institutions, US Congress, and the United Nations. An accomplished documentarian, she received MPI production grants to support her work on Dog Days and Mama Rwanda. In 2018, she will lead our new Documentary Storytelling writing workshop.

Laura’s success as a documentarian revealed an even stronger passion—writing dynamic, character-driven narratives. When she decided to move from documentaries into narrative film, Laura knew she needed a smart, compelling short film to showcase her talent. So​ ​​she​ ​joined our Short Film screenwriting workshop to write Moving Violation.

Part comedy, part mock-horror flick, Moving Violation ​​​ features a​ jilted​ bride​ -to-be who​ ​​takes​ her​​ frustrations out on a local speed camera​, ​​gi​ ving ​Laura​ the potential​ ​ both to ​entertain and​ ​​to ​​​shine a light on the​ e​​ xpanding surveillance state. MPI funded the film’s production in 2017, Laura wrote and directed, and MPI placed an intern on set—support Laura calls “instrumental.” The film features Milana Vayntrub who stars in This Is Us and the forthcoming Marvel series New Warriors.

FOUNDATION FOR ECONOMIC We partnered with the Foundation for Economic EDUCATION (FEE) Education (FEE) for our fourth annual Filmmaking and Entrepreneurship seminar. Here, 25-30 college- aged filmmakers learned vital economic principles that can shape their careers. Featuring lectures from MPI staff members, MPI filmmakers, and industry experts, the seminar taught real-world tips on stretching budgets, marketing and distribution, and telling compelling stories.

YOUNG AMERICANS FOR LIBERTY

INSTITUTE FOR We partnered with the Institute for Humane Studies HUMANE STUDIES in March to host a “Human Rights in Film” screening event of State of Control in Austin, TX, during the SXSW film festival. This MPI-supported documentary follows journalists who find themselves on the wrong end of the Chinese police state when they try to expose Chinese human rights abuses. A Q&A followed with the film’s director, Christian Johnston, and MPI’s founder, Thor Halvorssen.
