Nearly 40 years ago, a small group of independent film production and sales companies had a vision of the film industry working together for the betterment of the whole. They saw the need for a Hollywood-based international marketplace for film. The American Film Market (AFM) was born out of this entrepreneurial spirit and collaboration of competitors. The first AFM in 1981 was attended by 34 sales companies and hundreds of buyers from all over the world. The AFM was an immediate success, fostering an environment where film financing and buyer discovery could flourish. It quickly became a required stop on the annual calendar of buyers, sellers, and producers worldwide. Today, the AFM is all-inclusive, drawing together the global industry – an amalgamation of film professionals from every corner of the world. It is the destination for all players in the industry to meet face-to-face, do business, and have thoughtful conversations about new films and the everchanging marketplace. The AFM is produced by the Independent Film & Television Alliance (IFTA), the trade association that unites Independents around the world and ensures that they are well represented across all issues that impact the independent business. IFTA’s AFM is operated by the industry, for the industry – no other market has this history or connection. 2019 While the AFM has evolved over the last 40 years, one thing has remained constant – the energy, creativity, and commitment of its participants. We wish you great success – for this year and for the next 40. ARKET M ILM F Michael Ryan Jean M. • Screendollars About Films, the Film Industry No
For Exhibitors September 21, 2020 Screendollars About Films, the Film Industry No. 135 Newsletter and Cinema Advertising We celebrate the remarkable career of actress Frances McDormand, who has delighted audiences for 35 years with her portrayals of strong-willed and colorful heroines. Her debut to feature film was in 1984 in Blood Simple, directed by brothers Joel and Ethan Coen. Joel and Frances met in 1983 during her audition for the film, became a couple and married the next year. McDormand also starred in the Coen Brothers’ comedies Raising Arizona (1987) and Fargo (1996), in which she played a very pregnant detective, Marge Gunderson, with an unforgettable Norwegian-American accent. McDormand has earned critical acclaim throughout her long and prolific career for her performances in film and television and on stage. In fact, she is one of only 24 actors to have won Academy, Emmy and Tony Blood Simple Awards, a feat known as the Triple Crown of Acting. Her most recent role is in Chole Zhao’s Nomadland, about a (1984) woman in her 60’s who sets off in a van to wander through the American West, a modern-day nomad. The film and McDormand’s performance have emerged as darlings of the 2020 International Film Festival circuit. Nomadland is being distributed by Searchlight Pictures and opens in theatres nationwide on 12/2. “I'm a character actress, plain and simple...Who can worry about a career? Have a life. Movie stars have careers - actors work, and then they don't work, and then they work again.” – Frances McDormand Three Billboards

  • 1 Slapstick After Fordism: WALL-E, Automatism and Pixar's Fun Factory Animation
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by St Andrews Research Repository Slapstick After Fordism: WALL-E, Automatism and Pixar’s Fun Factory animation: an interdisciplinary journal 11:1 (March 2016) Paul Flaig, University of Aberdeen In his recent The World Beyond Your Head, Matthew Crawford (2015) argues for a reclaiming of the real against the solipsism of contemporary, technologically cocooned life. Opposing digitally induced distraction, he insists on confronting the contingencies of an obstinately material, non- human world, one that rudely insists beyond our representational schema and cognitive certainties. In this Crawford joins an increasingly vocal chorus of critics questioning the ongoing transformation of human subjectivity via digital mediation and online connectivity (see Turkle 2012 and Carr 2011). Yet to mount this critique Crawford turns to a surprising example: Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, the Disney Channel’s first entirely computer animated television series, running from 2006 to the present. Given the proclaimed philosophical stakes of his book, which draws on Heidegger’s concept of “Being-in-the-World” and critiques Kantian Aufklärung, what peeks Crawford’s interest in Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, aimed at teaching pre-schoolers rudimentary concepts, facts and vocabulary? Specifically, it is the contrast between Clubhouse and Mickey’s first adventures in Disney shorts of the twenties and thirties.
