For Exhibitors Screendollars August 10, 2020 About Films, the Film Industry No. 129 Newsletter and Cinema Advertising Happy birthday to Stan Durwood, the Founder of AMC Theatres, born 100 years ago on August 5, 1920. Stan was a highly motivated and creative entrepreneur, who expanded the family theatre business he took over in 1960 to become one of the largest theatre chains in the world. He is credited with many innovations that transformed the movie business, most notably, the creation of the multiplex cinema and the invention of the arm-rest cup holder. Purpose-built, multiple- screen, cinema entertainment complexes became Parkway Twin Theatres, the first Multiplex, The dominant force in exhibition in the late 20th century, growing a $2B annual industry in opened in Kansas City on July 12, 1963 1975 to a $6B industry in 1997. He was a proud son of Kansas City, where AMC is based. Welcome Back - Looking Forward to a Brighter 2021 As theatres begin to re-open and the industry comes back to life, we take stock of the positive signs of what lies ahead. The movie business has been interrupted, but it is not broken. Despite the significant challenges this year, when new movies return to theatres, audiences will follow. When circumstances permit, people are going to say to themselves, “I have been stuck at home for months watching streaming, and I’m tired of that. Now I want go out with friends and family, see other people, and experience something fantastic." Ryan May 2021 Examining Committee Members: Jan Fernback, Advisory Chair, Media and Communication Nancy Morris, Media and Communication Fabienne Darling-Wolf, Media and Communication Ron Becker, External Member, Miami University ABSTRACT This study considers the case of representation of transgender people and issues on American fictional television from 2004 to 2014, a period which represents a steady surge in transgender television characters relative to what came before, and prefigures a more recent burgeoning of transgender characters since 2014. The study thus positions the period of analysis as an historical period in the changing representation of transgender characters. A discourse analysis is employed that not only assesses the way that transgender characters have been represented, but contextualizes American fictional television depictions of transgender people within the broader sociopolitical landscape in which those depictions have emerged and which they likely inform. Television representations and the social milieu in which they are situated are considered as parallel, mutually informing discourses, including the ways in which those representations have been engaged discursively through reviews, news coverage and, in some cases, blogs. ii To Desmond, Oonagh and Eamonn For everything. Mazza, Ph.D. University of Pittsburgh, 2009 This dissertation examines the citational use of the Judeo-Christian Bible in two sociopolitical debates within the United States: first, the debate over the abolition of slavery in the nineteenth century, and second, the contemporary debate over gay rights. This study incorporates two core theses. First, I argue that the contemporary religious right, in its anti-gay use of the Bible, is replicating the hermeneutical practices used by opponents of the abolitionist movement. My second thesis parallels the first: I argue that the contemporary activists who reclaim the Bible as a pro-gay instrument are standing in the same hermeneutical tradition as nineteenth-century Christian abolitionists. -

Blood Diamond 2006
Blood Diamond 2006 To an extent, Blood Diamond is a victim of its own length. While the film includes a number of disturbing political and sociological insights, the adventure story is tepid and loses momentum as the storyline bogs down. The main character, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, has an effective arc that is believable because it does not force him to act contrary to his nature, but it takes a long time for Blood Diamond to get us to DiCaprio's moment of recognition. Pacing issues aside, this is a well constructed movie - clearly the product of a director who understands how to make a top- notch motion picture. It looks great and sounds great. If only Edward Zwick's mastery of the medium had extended to pruning the screenplay and editing the final result, Blood Diamond might have been a tremendous film rather than one worthy of only a lukewarm recommendation. The story takes place in 1999 Sierra Leone, when the country is embroiled in a civil war. In this struggle, it's hard to determine which side is worse: the government or the rebels. As is often the case in this sort of bloodbath, atrocities abound and it's the innocent farmers and villagers caught in between who pay the price. Diamonds, one of the country's largest exportable commodities, are being smuggled out and purchased on the open market despite a supposed international ban on the purchase of so-called "conflict diamonds" or "blood diamonds." This historical background (which is more complicated as presented in the movie) is accurate, although the three primary characters embroiled in events are fictional. -
