He sur passed every other in the extent of the unknown regions which he visited, as well as in the amount of new and important information collected ; having traversed Asia from one extremity to the other, including the elevated central regions, and those interior provinces of China from which foreigners have since been rigidly excluded. " He has," says Bitter, " been frequently called the Herodotus of the Middle Ages, and he has a just claim to that title. If the name of a discoverer of Asia were to be assigned to any person, nobody would better deserve it." THE REPUBLIC OF NOVGOROD (‘ LORD NOVGOROD THE GREAT," Gospodin Velikii Novgorod, as it once called itself, is the starting-point of Russian history. It is also without a rival among the Russian city-states of the Middle Ages. Kiev and Moscow are greater in political importance, especially in the earliest and latest mediaeval times-before the Second Crusade and after the fall of Constantinople-but no Russian town of any age has the same individuality and self-sufficiency, the same sturdy republican independence, activity, and success. Who can stand against God and the Great Novgorod ?-Kto protiv Boga i Velikago Novgoroda .J-was the famous proverbial expression of this self-sufficiency and success. From the beginning of the Crusading Age to the fall of the Byzantine Empire Novgorod is unique among Russian cities, not only for its population, its commerce, and its citizen army (assuring it almost complete freedom from external domination even in the Mongol Age), but also as controlling an empire, or sphere of influence, extending over the far North from Lapland to the Urals and the Ob. -

609 DETLEF SAMMANN (1857-1938) was born on February 28th in Westerhever-Eiderstedt, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, and at the age of fifteen began a four-year apprenticeship with a local painter of interior decoration. Thereafter he traveled for three years in the Dresden area and worked under the court artist Lankau, a renowned muralist. In August of 1881 Sammann arrived in New York City aboard the S.S. Australia and worked for a year as a decorator before returning home.1 He had earned enough money to pay for a course of instruction under Wilhelm Georges Ritter at the Dresden School of Industrial Art.2 Two of his portraits, which were stylistically influenced by Rembrandt, were hung in the municipal museum in Vienna.3 On February 9, 1884 he married Anna Maria Bianka Schmidt, an Austrian native and a resident of Dresden. He returned to New York City with his wife and opened a studio where he created for the leading interior decorators elaborate designs with flowers. Their daughter, Katherine (Katie) Bertha Sammann, was born on September 10, 1884. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States on July 19, 1889 in Jersey City, New Jersey.4 His first American passport was granted October 4, 1889. At that time Sammann visited Dresden and studied tapestry painting in Paris. He returned to New York City in 1891 when he was elected a “manager” of the local Verein für Kunst und Wissenschaft, an organization of immigrant Germans who encouraged art and social reform.5 Later he became a co-founder of New York’s Albrecht Dürer Verein, a society that promoted industrial arts.6 He was also elected a member of the local Society of Art and Science. -

Initially associated with a political organization (“Solidarity Tucson”), which actively supported the Solidarity Movement throughout the 1980s, the Polish diaspora has gradually transformed into an ethnic community very much focused on maintaining its distinctive heritage. Recent formation of the Polish folkloric dance group Lajkonik was directly stimulated by the local multicultural establishment, which promotes ethnic diversity in the Old Pueblo. Having become an integral part of the Southwestern society, Lajkonik has developed a collection of identity practices, which despite diverse influences continues to reproduce Polish cultural traits. In my ethnographic account, I examine ways, by which members of the Lajkonik group construct their diasporic identities. First, I focus on the core activities of the group, which include the practice of Polish traditions, learning folk dances and songs in a wide cultural context, and negotiating the speaking of Polish. Additional analyses, based on video recordings, of Polish classes and dance rehearsals, which show the actual mechanics of the production processes, as well as the narratives of the teacher and parent of performers, further support the account of the ethnographer. -
