První bibliografie prací o Koreji a překladů z korejštiny vznikly už v 50. a 60. letech minulého století. Universitní, později Národní knihovna vydala v roce 19561 a 19642 výběrový přehled českých a slovenských knižních publikací o Korejské lidově demokratické republice, zahrnující jak práce domácích autorů, tak práce přeložené. Velmi stručnou bibliografii zaměřenou jen na korejskou literaturu připravila Městská knihovna v Praze v roce 1959,3 a v roce 1963 vydala v edici Poznáváme země našich přátel další stručnou bibliografii korejské literatury doplněnou ukázkami překladů.4 V 60. letech 20. století započali dva významní pracovníci Orientálního ústavu ČSAV, indolog Miloslav Krása (1920-2004) a íránista Jiří Bečka (1915-2004) se sestavováním bibliografie prací o různých zemích Orientu. Do plánovaného projektu byla zapojena i editorka této bibliografie, jejíž ručně pořizované bibliografické záznamy prací o Koreji byly později uloženy ve veřejně nepřístupném lístkovém katalogu Národní knihovny. Velkorysý záměr iniciátorů se však nenaplnil i kvůli nové orientaci pracovního zaměření Orientálního ústavu po roce 1968. V roce 1977 inicioval vědecký pracovník Orientálního ústavu, PhDr. Jiří Šíma, DrSc.,5 Bibliografickou edici Orientálního ústavu. Editorka této bibliografie v době svého působení na tomto pracovišti pro ni v roce 1978 zkompilovala bibliografii zakladatele československé koreanistiky Doc. PhDr. Aloise Pultra, která měla vyjít jako 3. svazek této edice. Ta však byla v roce 1980 zastavena a bibliografie A. Müller,7 rozhodl o tom, že vydávání edice bude obnoveno.8 Díky navázání kontaktů československých koreanistů s Asociací korejských studií v Evropě (Association for Korean Studies in Europe / AKSE) počátkem 80. let minulého století, kdy koreanisté získali možnost zúčastňovat se s referáty jejích konferencí, byla v roce 1985 v AKSE Newsletter 8 uveřejněna několikastránková vybraná bibliografie prací československých koreanistů slovenského koreanisty J. Genzora zahrnující jak publikace knižní, tak časopisecké.9 V tomto bulletinu byl pak jako součást zpráv o koreanistice v Československu uveřejňován – i když ne zcela pravidelně – seznam bibliografických záznamů o nejnovějších publikacích, jehož sestavováním byla do roku 2007 pověřována editorka této bibliografie. V pozdějších letech tuto práci převzal Seminář koreanistiky Ústavu Dálného východu na Filosofické fakultě Karlovy university. V dubnu 1995 se v Praze konala 17. konference Asociace korejských studií v Evropě, a o rok dříve byl do předsednictva AKSE zvolen doc. Vladimír Pucek, dlouholetý vedoucí oddělení koreanistiky na Katedře věd o zemích Asie a Afriky na Filozofické fakultě UK, který v té době působil také jako zástupce ředitele Ústavu Dálného východu a předseda Česko- korejské společnosti. Ten spolu s dalšími spolupracovníky zajišťoval přípravu pražské konference. V souvislosti s touto

Lee, Chair My dissertation concerns the development of the literary motif of “lovesickness” (sangsa py ǒng ) in late Chos ǒn narratives. More specifically, it examines the correlation between the expression of feelings and the corporeal symptoms of lovesickness as represented in Chos ǒn romance narratives and medical texts, respectively, of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. As the convergence of literary and medical discourse, lovesickness serves as a site to define both the psychological and physical experiences of love, implying the correlation between mind and body in the non-Western tradition. The analysis itself is re-categorized into the discussions of the feeling and the body. In the discussion of the feeling, it will be argued that the feeling of longing not only occupies an important position in literature, but also is gendered and structured in lyrics and narratives of the seventeenth century. In addressing the rubric of feelings of “longing,” this part seeks the ii theoretical grounds of how the intense experience of longing is converted to language of love and to bodily symptoms to constitute the knowledge of lovesickness. The second part concerns the representation of lovesick characters in Korean romance, particularly concerning the body politics of the Chos ŏn society.

    The Korean Internet Freak Community and Its Cultural Politics, 2002–2011 by Sunyoung Yang A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Anthropology University of Toronto © Copyright by Sunyoung Yang Year of 2015 The Korean Internet Freak Community and Its Cultural Politics, 2002–2011 Sunyoung Yang Doctor of Philosophy Department of Anthropology University of Toronto 2015 Abstract In this dissertation I will shed light on the interwoven process between Internet development and neoliberalization in South Korea, and I will also examine the formation of new subjectivities of Internet users who are also becoming neoliberal subjects. In particular, I examine the culture of the South Korean Internet freak community of DCinside.com and the phenomenon I have dubbed “loser aesthetics.” Throughout the dissertation, I elaborate on the meaning-making process of self-reflexive mockery including the labels “Internet freak” and “surplus (human)” and gender politics based on sexuality focusing on gender ambiguous characters, called Nunhwa, as a means of collective identity-making, and I explore the exploitation of unpaid immaterial labor through a collective project making a review book of a TV drama Painter of the Wind. The youth of South Korea emerge as the backbone of these creative endeavors as they try to find their place in a precarious labor market that has changed so rapidly since the 1990s that only the very best succeed, leaving a large group of disenfranchised and disillusioned youth. I go on to explore the impact of late industrialization and the Asian financial crisis, and the nationalistic desire not be left behind in the age of informatization, but to be ahead of the curve.

    Journal of Korean Law, Vol.2, No.3, 2003 Traditional Legal Thoughts in Korea Chongko Choi * Abstract In spite of the scarcity of research related to traditional Korean law, this article attempts to offer a general overview of traditional Korean legal concepts for Western readers. It surveys the legal history of Korea, from ancient times to the reception of Western law in the 19th Century. Due to Korea’s geographic location--between China and Japan--Korean law holds many similarities to that of “East Asian Common Law.” However, Korea has continuously endeavoured to indigenize imported foreign laws. The Tangun mythology offers the archetype of the Korean concept of law and justice. On the subject of medieval legal concepts influenced by Buddhism, Wonhyo, Choe Chiwon and Chong Mongju are mainly analysed. In regard to early modern legal concepts, the Neo-Confucianists Chong Tojon, Yi Hwang (Toegye) are discussed. When discussing the legal concepts of the late modern period, the Sirhak School, namely Yi I (Yulgok), Yi Ik (Songho), Chong Yakyong (Tasan) are analysed. Kang Hang, Yi Chinyoung and Yi Maegye are included due to their contribution towards “East Asian Common Law”. Each period had dominant morals and values that were enforced by the law.     Cold War Cultures in Korea Instructor: Travis Workman Campuses: U of Minnesota, Ohio State U, and Pennsylvania State U Course website: http://coldwarculturesinkorea.com In this course we will analyze the Cold War (1945-1989) not only as an era in geopolitics, but also as a historical period marked by specific cultural and artistic forms. We focus on the Korean peninsula, looking closely at the literary and film cultures of both South Korea and North Korea. We discuss how the global conflict between U.S.- centered and Soviet-centered societies affected the politics, culture, and geography of Korea between 1945 and 1989, treating the division of Korea as an exemplary case extending from the origins of the Cold War to the present. We span the Cold War divide to compare the culture and politics of the South and the North through various cultural forms, including anti-communist and socialist realist films, biography and autobiography, fiction, and political discourse. We also discuss the legacy of the Cold War in contemporary culture and in the continued existence of two states on the Korean peninsula. The primary purpose is to be able to analyze post-1945 Korean cultures in both their locality and as significant aspects of the global Cold War era. Topics will include the politics of melodrama, cinema and the body, visualizing historical memory, culture under dictatorship, and issues of gender. En Asie, l’histoire socio-linguistique a parfois fait fleurir les énoncés épistolaires à l’écran et, parfois, les a fait flétrir. Les mélodrames ont développé les lettres-destin oralisés comme des charnières de la narration dramatique. Même un cinéma sous régime communiste comme celui de la Corée du Nord entretien ce modèle, mais en le détournant au profit de son épistolier et leader suprême. À partir des années 1990, des cinéastes comme Shunji Iwai ou Jeong Jae-eun ont écranisé les missives en leur attribuant un pouvoir de véridiction en conflit : social/persona.
