Lee, Chair My dissertation concerns the development of the literary motif of “lovesickness” (sangsa py ǒng ) in late Chos ǒn narratives. More specifically, it examines the correlation between the expression of feelings and the corporeal symptoms of lovesickness as represented in Chos ǒn romance narratives and medical texts, respectively, of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. As the convergence of literary and medical discourse, lovesickness serves as a site to define both the psychological and physical experiences of love, implying the correlation between mind and body in the non-Western tradition. The analysis itself is re-categorized into the discussions of the feeling and the body. In the discussion of the feeling, it will be argued that the feeling of longing not only occupies an important position in literature, but also is gendered and structured in lyrics and narratives of the seventeenth century. In addressing the rubric of feelings of “longing,” this part seeks the ii theoretical grounds of how the intense experience of longing is converted to language of love and to bodily symptoms to constitute the knowledge of lovesickness. The second part concerns the representation of lovesick characters in Korean romance, particularly concerning the body politics of the Chos ŏn society. So I examine both emotional and physical pains of characters who pursue the romantic goals of love and marriage and illuminate the nature of conflicts, also moved on to the medical sphere beyond the literary imagination. While this study offers readers an introduction to the diversity of conditions included under the banner of lovesickness in the seventeenth century Korea, I argue that this discourse of lovesickness serves as a site for Chos ǒn period readers to conceptualize “romantic love.” Within the confines of a Confucian society that limited relations between men and women, I contend that, rather than perceiving characters involved in romance as mere victims of love within an oppressive culture, these works reveal the complex negotiations between the body and the mind, gender ideals and sexual desire, and romantic love and Confucian ideology. iii The dissertation of Janet Yoon-sun Lee is approved. Lovesickness engages with detectable symptoms: the palpable, visible, and tangible manifestations of an emotional and physical reality. Lovesickness has been a powerful theme in the Western literary cannon, especially in association with its ideals of courtly culture. Yet it is not exclusively a Western experience. It assumes particular significance within different contexts and factors and functions as a key term that unravels the intersecting emotions of love, desire, and passion. Although this dissertation seeks to describe lovesickness as a universal motif in literature, it also aims to provide an alternative analysis of its representation vis-à-vis specific literary examples taken from seventeenth century Korea. My work addresses sangsa py ŏng ֒ԷѠ (lovesickness) within mid-to late-Chos ŏn period literature. In this dissertation, I locate the language of lovesickness within this literary context and examine the relationship between the feeling of longing prominent in literary tradition and the body embodying a complex array of affectionate feelings. My dissertation is based on my observation that although there is an increasing 1 interest in gender, emotion, and body within Korean area studies, lovesickness has been primarily perceived as a minor, repetitive motif in literature and consequently, has barely been given scholarly attention. However, I intend to draw on the idiosyncratic conception of lovesickness as a rich nexus of those fleeting concepts at the convergence of literary and medical discourses. Simultaneously, this study considers Confucian norms and gender politics as important components in understanding lovesickness in premodern Korea, as my work illuminates the complex web of meanings embedded in the discursive construction of lovesickness. The presence of lovesickness has aroused general and popular recognition, but its expression as discourse raises the complex question of representation. Not only does it tie implicit, internalized feelings to visible physical symptoms, but the representations of lovesickness reveals what is intended, as well as distorted, in the processes of reconstructing in language a narrative that surpasses, even replaces everyday truth. In other words, the representations of lovesick characters are presumed to exalt love as intensely pure and naive, but, paradoxically, it also bears political and polemic implications. Lovesickness allows characters to find a way to empower themselves, not only by resisting social conventions, but also by embracing—to excess—certain official norms and canonical expressions. Another view of Bhakti is concentration of the mind on God and experiencing oneness with the Divine. Win love through love Although many sages have expressed different views about the nature of Bhakti, the basic characteristic of devotion is Love. Love is present in every human being in however small a measure. The riva (individual) is an aspect of the Divine, who is the supreme embodiment of Love. Man also is an embodiment of Love, but because his love is directed towards worldly objects, it gets tainted and he is unable to get a vision of God in all His beauty.

WANG Mirror, Moon, and Memory in Eighth-Century China: From Dragon Pond to Lunar Palace Why the Flight-to-the-Moon The Bard’s one-time felicitous phrasing of a shrewd observation has by now fossilized into a commonplace: that one may “hold, as ’twere, the mirror up to nature; to show virtue her own feature, scorn her own image, and the very age and body of the time his form and pressure.”1 Likewise deeply rooted in Chinese discourse, the same analogy has endured since antiquity.2 As a commonplace, it is true and does not merit renewed attention. When presented with a physical mirror from the past that does register its time, however, we realize that the mirroring or showing promised by such a wisdom is not something we can take for granted. The mirror does not show its time, at least not in a straightforward way. It in fact veils, disfi gures, and ultimately sublimates the historical reality it purports to refl ect. A case in point is the scene on an eighth-century Chinese mirror (fi g. 1). It shows, at the bottom, a dragon strutting or prancing over a pond. A pair of birds, each holding a knot of ribbon in its beak, fl ies toward a small sphere at the top. Inside the circle is a tree fl anked by a hare on the left and a toad on the right. So, what is the design all about? A quick iconographic exposition seems to be in order. To begin, the small sphere refers to the moon.

Five types of UL are delineated and conceptualized on a continuum from lower to greater levels of interdependence: crush on someone unavailable, crush on someone nearby, pursuing a love object, longing for a past lover, and an unequal love relationship. Study 1a found all types of UL relationships to be less emotionally intense than equal love and 4 times more frequent than equal love during a 2-year period. Study 1b found little evidence for limerent qualities of UL. Study 2 found all types of UL to be less intense than equal love on passion, sacrifice, dependency, commitment, and practical love, but more intense than equal love on turmoil. These results suggest that UL is not a good simulation of true romantic love, but an inferior approximation of that ideal.     ARISTOTLE ON LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP DAVID KONSTAN Philia is exceptional among ancient Greek value terms for the number of still unre- solved, or at least intensely debated, questions that go to the heart of its very nature.1 Does it mean “friendship”, as it is most commonly rendered in discussions of Aris- totle, or rather “love”, as seems more appropriate in some contexts? Whether it is love, friendship, or something else, is it an emotion, a virtue, or a disposition? The same penumbra of ambiguity surrounds the related term philos, often rendered as “friend” but held by some to include kin and other relations, and even to refer chiefly to them. Thus, Elizabeth Belfiore affirms that “the noun philos surely has the same range as philia, and both refer primarily, if not exclusively, to relationships among close blood kin” (2000: 20). In respect to the affective character of philia, Michael Peachin (2001: 135 n. 2) describes “the standard modern view of Roman friendship” as one “that tends to reduce significantly the emotional aspect of the relationship among the Ro- mans, and to make of it a rather pragmatic business”, and he holds the same to be true of Greek friendship or philia. Scholars at the other extreme maintain that ancient friendship was based essentially on affection. As Peachin remarks (ibid., p. 7), “D. Konstan [1997] has recently argued against the majority opinion and has tried to inject more (modern-style?) emotion into ancient amicitia”. Some critics, in turn, have sought a compromise between the two positions, according to which ancient friend- ship involved both an affective component and the expectation of practical services.

    Journal of Korean Law, Vol.2, No.3, 2003 Traditional Legal Thoughts in Korea Chongko Choi * Abstract In spite of the scarcity of research related to traditional Korean law, this article attempts to offer a general overview of traditional Korean legal concepts for Western readers. It surveys the legal history of Korea, from ancient times to the reception of Western law in the 19th Century. Due to Korea’s geographic location--between China and Japan--Korean law holds many similarities to that of “East Asian Common Law.” However, Korea has continuously endeavoured to indigenize imported foreign laws. The Tangun mythology offers the archetype of the Korean concept of law and justice. On the subject of medieval legal concepts influenced by Buddhism, Wonhyo, Choe Chiwon and Chong Mongju are mainly analysed. In regard to early modern legal concepts, the Neo-Confucianists Chong Tojon, Yi Hwang (Toegye) are discussed. When discussing the legal concepts of the late modern period, the Sirhak School, namely Yi I (Yulgok), Yi Ik (Songho), Chong Yakyong (Tasan) are analysed. Kang Hang, Yi Chinyoung and Yi Maegye are included due to their contribution towards “East Asian Common Law”. Each period had dominant morals and values that were enforced by the law. I had experienced it as a teen and thought of it as part of first love. Does the Bible talk about lovesickness? There are many forms of sickness such as homesick, carsick, seasick, lovesick, even heaven sick. (Phil.1: 23) “But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better.” These can be experienced at any age. To answer your question, the Bible does mention lovesickness in the Song of Solomon (SOS 2:5; 5:8). The word lovesick consists of two Hebrew words (achabah) [love] and (chalah / kal ptc) [sick] “Sustain (samak / piel pf) me with raisin cakes, refresh (raphad / piel impv) me with apples, because I am lovesick.” (2:5) This was a natural remedy for the physical problems associated with lovesickness. This lesson will study Five aspects of Lovesickness. 1. Lovesickness is not related to age, but rather to romance of the heart. It is part of the early stages of romantic love. · It is part of the early stage of romance known as infatuation love -“You have made my heart beat faster with a single glance of your eyes.” (SOS 4:9) When the young of age experience it, we refer to it as puppy love. · It is part of the early stage of intimacy interest. · It is part of the early stage of commitment interest.
