CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT

2006 w as another exciting year for our centre.

In the 2005 Annual Report I outlined that the Netball Manaw atu Board w ould be aiming to correct the losses that occurred over the last three years. In 2006, this meant making some tough decisions, spending less in some areas and w orking hard to generate more revenue. I am pleased to report that the result w as a healthy surplus (before depreciation). I congratulate the Board and all others involved in turning around the financial state of Netball Manaw atu.

2006 w as again a year of staff changes and Netball Manaw atu welcomed tw o new staff members – Tania Roberts, General Manager and Paula Arztenhofer, Administration Officer. These new staff along w ith Jillian Gaze (previous GM) made significant contributions to Netball Manaw atu during the year. In 2006 the inaugural intermediate tournament w as held, along w ith the successfully run representative program, the professionally run prize giving evening, the final Saturday “finals day” and Manaw atu Standard Cup “Showcase” finals night. These w ere demonstrations of how much the staff contributed to a successful season.

There w ere some changes in 2005 - Premier One, the Manaw atu Standard Cup, w as played with eight teams and started w ith a qualifying series. The second year of the showcase finals night w as a great climax to the netball season. The second year of “Umpire your ow n” along w ith fixed playing times for Secondary School teams ran very smoothly; Intermediate netball again ran on Monday nights and w hile not w ithout some concerns, it should be noted that team numbers w ere significantly up on 2005.

Again considerable effort was put into the attaining and servicing of our sponsors, and steady progress was made. This w ill continue to be an area of focus for 2007, with the aim of keeping members fees as low as practical.

It w as w ith sadness that in July w e farewelled Jillian Gaze after 18 short months as the General Manager of Netball Manaw atu. In this short time Jillian initiated a number of positive changes to Netball Manaw atu. She w as also heavily involved in coaching at club and representative levels and I thank her for her contribution to Netball in Manaw atu.

Now that the financial situation has been improved, Netball Manaw atu has a more solid foundation w ith which to move forward. Working in the sporting and not-for-profit circles, Netball Manaw atu w ill have to continue to w ork hard to maintain a solid financial foundation. In 2007 Netball Manaw atu will focus on improving and maximizing delivery of its services while continuing to be financially prudent.

Dw ight Graham Chairperson

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT

As we reflect on 2006 in this report w e also start looking tow ards the future, which is shaping up to be a busy and exciting year for us as a number of events head our w ay.

So let’s start w ith reflecting back on 2006. I think w e can all agree that it’s been yet another busy year filled w ith some fantastic netball w ithin our centre. To sum it up, w e successfully overcame some obstacles, have experienced and moved w ith change, have new faces in the office, had yet another great Representative season w ith 9 teams representing our centre, and successfully hosted the Silver Ferns on their ‘Shine On Tour’, the Flyers and Shakers in a National Bank Cup game, the inaugural Palmfeilds Junior Tournament, and a Milo Day for juniors.

A big change for the centre w as having new faces in the office. Paula Arztenhofer commenced in March as our Administration Officer, taking on an integral role w ithin the team and starting at the beginning of the netball season. Then w e experienced the departure of Jillian Gaze, w ho headed back home to Australia in July. She had been w ith the team for 18 months and put into place some great initiatives w ithin the centre. We w ere grateful to have Lyn Carey (Board Member) to step into the General Manager position until an appointment was made, and that’s w hen I came on board in August. What a time to start! All the finals were fast approaching, the Special Aw ards to sort out, and trying to get my head around what this position was all about! How ever, the netball community pulled together and have embraced these staff changes. We are grateful for everyone’s patience and support through this time of change, w e are now settling in to start our 2007 season.

Our members are important to us and determine how we shape our future at Netball Manaw atu. Whilst our membership numbers remain stable w e are very aware of the grow ing popularity of other sports, likew ise we keep a close eye on the ever changing economy w hereby our costs are forever increasing, e.g. pow er, venue hireage etc. We continue to think broadly and aim for improved quality and effectiveness in our delivery of the game to ensure members remain w ithin our sporting code, w hilst ensuring that netball within the Manaw atu continues to remain affordable.

We w ould also like to take this opportunity to extend a big thank you to all of our volunteers. When you reflect on the w ord ‘volunteer’ it extends out to all the club and school personnel, the numerous coaches, umpires, bench officials, supporters, board members, portfolio members and the list goes on. I truly did not realise how much time, effort and endless support our volunteers give to this sport w ithin our centre. It is great to see such camaraderie w ithin such a large netw ork of people and w e look forw ard to building and grow ing on our volunteer community for 2007. As SPARC say ‘Cheers Volunteers’, w e would not be able to operate w ithout you.

We are a great Netball centre w ho continues to produce high calibre coaches, umpires, bench officials, players and overall have a fantastic volunteer base that put in so much time into assisting us running great competitions. Throughout the follow ing pages in this report it will show the achievements w ithin our centre and a few highlights of 2006.

Looking forw ard to 2007 w e have another busy year ahead, not only ensuring the smooth running of our Premier One, Club, Secondary School, Intermediate and Future Ferns netball competitions, but also w ith hosting the Flyers and Rebels in a National Bank Cup Game and the Intermediate (Year 7 & 8) Championships. The Western Junior Secondary School Tournament returns for 2007 and the Scottwood Trust National Championships w ill be held in Arena Manaw atu in September. What an exciting year ahead for all of us at Netball Manaw atu.

Happy reading and w e look forward to an enjoyable 2007 year.

GAME DEVELOPMENT

The Game Development Portfolio is responsible for the development of our coaches, umpires, bench officials, players, managers and selectors throughout the game. In 2006 the Game Development Officer role w as absorbed into a number of other positions w ithin Netball Manaw atu. Sheryl Jones w as appointed to the role of Coaching Co-ordinator and Linda Liggins w as appointed as the Umpiring Co-ordinator. Their passion and expertise has flow ed through into the programs they conducted and co-ordinated throughout the season and w e are lucky to have such enthusiastic personnel.

COACHING In 2006, Netball Manaw atu continued its focus on the development of quality core coaching by providing coaches w ith the skills and drills to teach the basics of netball. Through solid coaching of the basic skills our player base w ill improve.

The GoCoach! Programme saw a very large number of participants this season, an increase on last year’s numbers, w hich saw parents and young players being able to offer value to their teams. The goal w as to improve the competence and confidence of coaches for improved player skill delivery. Jillian Gaze visited a number of schools to spread the Healthy Living message and improve “trouble spots” in their play by conducting the Specialist Clinics.

Many coaches took advantage of the offer to have Specialist training clinics to assist them with problem areas that they w ere experiencing. Some of the topics included selecting, circle defence and mid court flow. Jillian Gaze travelled to the schools during their practice times and gave the coaches and parents on the sideline some pointers that w e hope gave them more confidence to overcome the difficulties they w ere experiencing.

The NNZ Coachforce Officer for our region, Ivy Topping came and ran a through court on attack coaching session that w as enjoyed by all the coaches that attended. We are fortunate to have Ivy come into our area and w e hope to utilise her expertise more in 2007.

In 2006, as part of our Volunteer Recognition w e once again gave out our awards for coaching: The Les Pyne Memorial Trophy (Coach of the Year), for outstanding achievements in coaching, w hich w as awarded to Fay Selby-Law and the Selby Cup (Spirit of Coaching), for outstanding contribution to Netball Manaw atu in the area of coaching and coach development, w as awarded to Colleen Trembath for her tireless effort of developing our coaches and players, year after year.

Our clinics, courses and workshops were well received and w ell attended:

GoCoach! Clinics 121 participants

NNZ Level One 9 participants

NNZ Level 2 2 participants

NNZ Level 3A 1 participant

UMPIRING 2006 has been a very productive and successful season. Umpiring in the Manaw atu has stability, opportunities for grow th and consistency at all levels that w ill continue to strengthen in 2007. Linda Liggins has once again w orked tirelessly w ith the umpire programme to ensure a high level of development occurs. A special thanks to the Umpires Group, especially Maryann Roberts and Anne Blomfield for their dedication, they have consistently supported Linda in her w ork.

Netball Manaw atu umpires continue to achieve highly in both theory and practical at Regional and New Zealand level, as outlined in the Honours list. Together w ith a large number of other talented and committed umpires, they contribute consistently tow ards making netball an enjoyable and w orthwhile experience for everyone.

The Umpiring Pool has once again offered opportunities to umpires w anting to gain formal qualifications. There w as a pleasing consistency in the standard of umpiring from teams and we look forward to this continuing to develop in 2007 as the number of qualified umpires continues.

The Junior Umpiring programme is producing a significant number of talented umpires w ho are now part of the Western Talent ID Under 23 umpiring programme. Netball Manaw atu has two umpires w ho are now eligible to attend the NZSS Development Camp in 2007 from this group. There w ere 21 Netball Manaw atu Junior Badges aw arded this season and the Kiw i Whistlers w as once again w ell attended and of great benefit to the development of umpiring at this level. We also had 44 NZ Test Bank passes, w ell done to everyone w ho participated in umpire accreditation this year.

The Netball Manaw atu Centre Umpire Coaching Group proved to be a very successful initiative w ith ten umpires qualifying at the NZ Centre Aw ard level. Several umpires from this group w ill move on to the Regional level in 2007. Noteable achievements of the season for our centre are listed in the honours section of this report.

BENCH OFFICIALS 2006 w as another calm before the storm season for Bench Officials who w ill become hectic with a large number of volunteers being trained for the Scottwood Trust Champs to be held in in September 2007. We thank Trina Sheridan for all her hard w ork and many hours of ensuring that those w ho were trained have continued this season. We had tw o bench officials who maintained their National Accreditation, three people w ho gained National Accreditation and tw o w ho gained their Regional Bench Official Accreditation.

We held the Steffensen Tournament at Vautier Park and provided the Under 19’s division with a score bench to enable extra practice for those training for accreditation. In addition we supplied bench officials for Flyers games and Western events.

We continued the Junior Bench Officials program, w hich a small number participated in, how ever a greater emphasis w ill be put in place for 2007.

Special thanks to Sue Trim w ho assisted in organising the Bench Officials on a Tuesday night for the Manaw atu Standard Cup competition, her enthusiasm and dedication w as appreciated. We have a great team w ho consistently support the Bench Officials, a special mention to Laura Hook and Lisa Aull w ho continually assist in this area.

OPERATIONS

In 2006 the Operations Portfolio w orked diligently to ensure that Netball for all ages and levels ran smoothly and consistently. Without the tireless efforts of these ladies, Netball Manaw atu would cease to exist in the manner it does. This portfolio is responsible for grading, result collation, and daily operations at each venue. Personnel are appointed to co-ordinate our satellite competitions at Intermediate and Future Ferns.

Due to a rain interrupted season, most grades w ent directly into finals and did not have the opportunity of a semi final. Prizegiving w as once again held immediately after each round had finished ensuring that teams w ere there to receive the recognition that they deserved. Next season the round one prizegiving for club netball w ill be held directly after the round of games has finished before commencing round tw o to avoid confusion when teams are moved.

The Manaw atu Standard Cup w as a great success in 2006 w ith the reduced format. The main tw o games w ere held as part of the Show case evening along w ith a Celebrity Match that everyone enjoyed. Congratulations to Feilding Writeprice A1 who w here the winners this year.

The Club and Secondary School competition for this year w as fantastic, w ith some very close and nail-biting games tow ards the end of the season. Our membership levels in both competition areas remain stable and w e look forward to another competitive year for teams next year.

Massey Netball and Awatapu College supported the new Tertiary/Secondary Mixed grade and enjoyed being able to play netball but also have the Massey holidays off. This grade played at 12.30pm each w eek and had no finals. Uniforms w ere relaxed and watching the different style of play that male players bring to our game w as always a lot of fun. We hope more teams and schools w ill take up this opportunity in 2007.

Intermediate Netball continued to play on Monday evenings dow n at Vautier Park, managed by Sue Trim w ho ran a smooth operation. 79 teams enjoyed the ‘thrill’ of playing under lights each w eek, and despite the sometimes chilly evenings enjoyed the season. The numbers increased slightly after the initial drop by changing the format and day of the competition.

Once again, a strong contingent of Future Ferns teams enjoyed the indoors environment playing dow n at the B & M Centre each Saturday. A good turnout of numbers this year saw 80 teams delighted at having no cancellations due to the w eather. This is a popular option and is assisting in the development of this age group. Mahina Selby-Law and Miriama Selby-Rickit w ere the Co-ordinators and must be commended for their dedication and professionalism. The Future Ferns Tournament w as a huge success at Vautier Park and w e appreciate the continued support that w e receive from B & M Electrical and the w onderful spot prizes that w ere issued along w ith the support of Western Netball w ho assisted w ith the ‘goodie bags’ that every player received.

Fun Ferns w as run at three venues this season. Arena Manaw atu had 60 budding young netballers aged betw een five and seven running around having a great time learning the basics of netball, how to pass and pivot – or in their terms ‘squash the spider’. Watching these players grow each w eek is fantastic and we thank Jillian Gaze for running this programme. Due to the continued success, we hope to run two programmes next season. We also thank Sheryl Jones w ho assisted in the Feilding programme w ith up to six children attending and Jenny Hart and her supporters in Ashhurst for running the Fun Ferns programme out there for the 20 young players who attended each week. Many children in the country tend to miss out on wonderful opportunities such as this w ithout dedicated people at grass roots w ho assist in getting the programmes up and running.

NETBALL – Everyone’s game Page 9

FACILITIES Once again w e had a few problems w ith the new floodlights but that seems to have now been remedied for next season. The new surface on some of the courts and the carpark at Vautier Park w ere a w elcome improvement for this season. The travel congestion w as eased slightly due to the larger carpark and the new tw o-way system for leaving the backcourts.

We are very grateful to the follow ing people for their assistance at Vautier Park each w eek: • Manawatu Representative Teams for the collection of donations at the gate. • Robyn Chase and TuToa for their w ork in the cafeteria each Saturday, Monday and during tournaments. • Arthur Scott our handyman, w ho maintained and repaired our equipment. • Jan Clough, Maureen Flannagan, Edna Hansen, Beryl O’Sullivan, Colleen Trembath, and Sue Trim, our wonderful Vautier Park office personnel w ho consistently make themselves available for this duty. • Life and Service Members w ho volunteer their time so freely to assist with the running of our great game. • Aroha Griffiths for cleaning our facility each w eek.

Arena Manaw atu continue to provide the facilities for our Premier One competition and our Future Ferns. Thanks to the staff who co-ordinate our bookings and maintain the facilities. We look forw ard to using the new floors in 2007.

Thank you to all personnel w hom assisted in the Operational side of our sport. We appreciated all help offered and received.

Flyers – National Bank Cup (May) Netball Manaw atu hosted the game against the Shakers at Arena Manaw atu this season. It was a nail-biting game that could have gone either w ay, but on this occasion went the w ay of the Shakers. Roll on next season.

Steffensen Tournament (June) The Steffensen Representative Tournament w as held at Vautier Park for another year. We received 47 entries for the tournament and had a very successful day. It is alw ays an honour to be able to have Betty Steffensen in attendance to present the winning teams w ith their trophies.

B & M Future Ferns Fun Tournament (July) This w as a tournament for the teams to enter and have fun – and that is exactly w hat everyone did. The w eather w asn’t too unkind to us; the object of the day w as to end up winning on the Ace court. Watching the teams complete the circuit w as a lot of fun. Every player received a ‘goodie’ bag and a special thanks to B & M for the aw esome spot prizes.

Palmfeild Motors Year 7/8 Intermediate Champs (July) This w as an inaugural tournament to create a ‘National’ tournament for the players at this age group. It had a small follow ing w ith the promise from other Centres to support it in the future. We look forw ard to hosting this Championship in 2007 as w e hope w e will have a higher number in attendance due to the success in 2006. Congratulations and thanks to our Massey Practicum Student, Rose Hartrick w ho was Event Manager, for a job w ell done.

Milo Day (August) chose Netball Manaw atu to host a Milo Coaching Day and Adine Wilson came to Arena Manaw atu to share in the fun w ith 66 Intermediate children from all over Palmerston North. Thanks to a large group of volunteer coaches, a busy morning w as held for players from w arming up w ith aerobics, to learning new skills and drills, to designing posters for Nestle Milo. Every player received a ‘goodie’ bag to take aw ay w ith them as w ell as lots of skills and netball know ledge.

Competition Prizegiving (September) Once again w e awarded the trophies and certificates at the conclusion of each round of games. This format appears to be w idely accepted with all teams collecting their certificates and trophies for photos. Next season w e w ill conduct the round one prizegiving for Clubs directly after the conclusion of the games and before any games are played in round tw o. This is so that any teams that change grades are still able to receive their certificates and recognition.

Netball Manawatu Showcase (September) The finale for the Manaw atu Standard Cup proved to be another successful night, w hich involved a celebrity netball match w ith ‘scrums and line outs’! The experience of Feilding Writeprice A1 saw them take the title from their A2 team. Congratulations and thanks to our Massey Practicum Student, Catherine Reid w ho w as Event Manager, for a job w ell done.

Silver Ferns Coaching Clinic – Shine On Tour (October) This time it w as the Secondary School students turn to be involved w ith 10 Silver Ferns as part of the Fisher & Paykel Shine On Tour. We had 150 local and regional (Western) players take part in a great coaching clinic w hich was split into three sections, shooting, midcourt and defence and was held at Arena Manaw atu. All the Ferns gave their time and advice freely and many players and coaches alike w ere amazed w ith the w ealth of know ledge and expertise that they shared w ith everyone. The promotional take home packs that players received were amazing and all had an opportunity to receive signed posters from the Silver Ferns in attendance.

Special Awards (October) At the completion of the season it w as time to reflect and honour those w ho achieved w ithin our centre in netball. We had a fantastic turn-out which included Netball Manaw atu Life Members, portfolio members, volunteers, club personnel, players, Netball Manaw atu Board Members and so many other invited guests. Kingsgate provided a great venue and all enjoyed a night reflecting on the season. The aw ards were presented before watching a live Silver Ferns vs Australia tests match on the projector. We are looking to modify the Aw ards Night for 2007, so w e’ll keep you informed.
