The Te Awamutu College fi fth former has enjoyed extraordinary success in fi ve codes this year - triathlon, duathlon, road cycling, track cycling and soccer. She is fresh from winning the Auckland sec- ondary schools’ intermediate (U17) girls’ duath- lon and the Tour of Taranaki (U17) girls’ cycling crown - with only three day’s breather in between events. The 15-year-old pocket-rocket had hardly the ideal preparation for the duathlon. She suffered abrasions and bruising to the knee when knocked off her bike, by a vehicle turning into Woolworths, on the eve of the event. If she was hurting inwardly, she certainly didn’t show it once the starter’s gun went. Fourth after the fi rst 3.5km run, she ‘murdered’ her rivals on the 15km bike leg - fi nishing a minute clear of the second girl. She coasted home on the fi nal 2.5km run, win- ning in 58 minutes 16 seconds, from Kirsten Montgomery of Rangitoto in 59.17. Petersen rates the conditions she encountered on the Tour of Taranaki as the worst she has ever competed in. “It was cold, wet and windy during the time trial and some of the seniors riders fi nished the tour with icicles hanging off their helmets where they had been sweating.” Petersen featured prominently throughout the fi ve stages of the two-day 157km tour. It was very much a ‘three-horse race’ between Petersen, Aucklander Ella Brogen (coached by Graham Hunn) and Levin’s Gemma Dudley. These girls were involved in a sprint fi nish to three of the fi rst four stages. Petersen and Dudley dropped Brogen on the climb to the base of Mount Egmont. The Te Awamutu Sports rider went on to beat her New Zealand U17 team-mate (Brogen) home by fi ve seconds. Three of her Te Awamutu Sports club-mates also performed creditably in the tour. Peter Rennie fi nished 12th in the A grade, won by Manchester Commonwealth Games rider Gor- don McCauley. Rennie’s helmet was full of ice when he took it off after completing the tour. Nathan Bunn and Callum Newlands fi nished fi fth and sixth respectively in the U17 boys’ tour. Bunn was third on stage three and Newlands second on stage two.
