A group of Waikeria prisoners were involved in emptying 47 hotel rooms of furniture to help families displaced by the Christchurch earthquake. Escorted by their residential manager, eight men from the prison’s Maori Focus Unit joined the ranks of volunteers who assembled at the Novotel Tainui Hamilton hotel. The Novotel, which is being renovated, donated all the furniture and fixings from 47 rooms to a combined Housing NZ and Women’s Refuge effort for families displaced to the Waikato from Christchurch and for families who have family violence issues and have moved to safe houses. While staff from Corrections, Police, Housing New Zealand, Te Puni Kokiri among a host others moved hundreds of items of furniture, the prisoners were at a nearby warehouse sorting it for delivery to needy families. Waikeria Prison Manager Kevin Smith says trucks were on the road all day ferrying furniture from the hotel to the warehouse so the prisoners were kept very busy. ‘‘The day was a chance for the prisoners to give something back to the community but, for them, it was strewn with special moments that were quite moving. ‘‘A number of the people being helped were Afghan Kurd refugees who had settled in Christ- church and were moved to Hamilton after the earthquakes. “One woman told a prisoner that her family had been sleeping on blankets on the floor and had nothing in their house since arriving.” Mr Smith said having the community see and interact with prisoners also helped to breakdown negative stereotypes. “Having spent time in prison can carry a huge stigma, make it difficult for the men to find work and leave them socially isolated. Open mindedness by society is critical to successful reintegration.”

Are you stuck in a style rut? Discovering you’re in a style rut usually happens by chance, like when you see a Available from Health 2000 photo of yourself from fi ve years ago and notice you’re still wearing the same hair style! A style rut can happen at any age and is often caused by a mindset that has become trapped in a familiar and comfortable pattern and it can be diffi cult to escape as we become blind to the need for change or to the changes around us. Life is ever changing, we change; our lifestyles, expectations and goals change, even our entire bodies and our colouring changes, and of course fashions change. When we become oblivious to the changes around us it’s easy to slide into a rut of the same old same and comfort arrives in the form of familiarity. A style rut could be described as looking and/or feeling boring, staid, dowdy, ordinary or dull. Our wardrobe may feel uninspiring, when we buy a new garment we fi nd we’ve already got two just like it, we always wear the same style and colours, we don’t shop – we just restock or we go shopping and absolutely nothing appeals! Or perhaps we can’t quite remember the last time we had a real change to our hair or makeup. Take an honest look at your wardrobe, the way you dress, wear your makeup and hair. Is your look current or is it time for an update? Does your appearance make you feel or look older than you really are? Are you happy with your image? Do your clothes suit you, your personality and lifestyle? If you fi nd it diffi cult to self assess, ask an honest friend for some feedback. But if you are feeling stuck in a style rut there’s no time like the present to break free. Being aware of the need for change is the fi rst step.
