Sports Policy 2009
Waverley College Sports Policy 2009 The purpose of this document is to: * outline the sport / activity policy for students and parents * give parents a clear understanding of what is required of their sons Waverley College is a member of the Combined Associated Schools (CAS) of New South Wales. There are currently six schools in this Association: Barker College, Hornsby Cranbrook School, Bellevue Hill Knox Grammar School, Turramurra St Aloysius College, Milsons Point Trinity Grammar School, Summer Hill Waverley College, Waverley The CAS is essentially a sporting organisation. Our competition is played with the other schools of the Association. However, for trials and other games, Waverley does play schools outside the Association. It is common to play schools from the GPS, ISA, CHS and other school groups. As you would already be aware, your son’s involvement in the co-curricular activities at Waverley College is an integral part of the philosophy of the school. There are many roles that co-curricular activities fulfil, including: i) team style activities help to develop discipline both on and off the field ii) to attain and enhance skills in particular sports iii) to represent the College in inter-school sport iv) to develop physically and socially v) to learn how to be part of a group effort vi) to have significant contact with teachers in an informal situation vii) to enable parents, students and teachers to meet and work together Every student is to participate in at least one summer and one winter sport as a minimum requirement. The College has an outstanding history and strong success in sports activities. -
Chapter 2: School Sport in the South African Education System
CHAPTER 2: SCHOOL SPORT IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN EDUCATION SYSTEM CHAPTER 2: SCHOOL SPORT IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN EDUCATION SYSTEM 2.1 INTRODUCTION In order to have a better understanding of what the management of school sport entails, an investigation into the history of sport, and more specifically the history of the origin of sport, and school sport and physical education in a sociological context, is necessary. This approach should provide a better understanding of where the management of school sport as a field of study developed from (cf. par. 4.9, p. 296), and why it is currently rated as an important field within the study of sport management. This chapter starts with a brief discussion on the nature of the school which is followed by an account of the historic development of sport. Thereafter, school sport and physical education are analysed in a sociological context, whereafter the management of school sport is analysed through a social and development perspective by using social theories as instruments, in order to better understand this phenomenon. Modern trends in school sport and the impact these have on the role of the school sport manager and the management of school sport (cf. par. 2.4, p 70), are discussed before the chapter concludes with a discussion of the context, role, value and place of school sport in relation to the sport education sector and the sports industry (cf. par. 2.5, p. 98). 2.2 THE NATURE OF THE SCHOOL In order to look at the nature of the school more closely, different aspects related to a school, will be examined. -

From Chronology to Confessional: New Zealand Sporting Biographies in Transition
From Chronology to Confessional: New Zealand Sporting Biographies in Transition GEOFF WATSON Abstract Formerly rather uniform in pattern, sporting biographies have evolved significantly since the 1970s, becoming much more open in their criticism of teammates and administrators as well as being more revealing of their subject’s private lives. This article identifies three transitional phases in the genre; a chronological era, extending from the early twentieth century until the 1960s; an indirectly confessional phase between the 1970s and mid 1980s and an openly confessional phase from the mid-1980s. Despite these changes, sporting biographies continue to reinforce the dominant narratives around sport in New Zealand. New Zealand sporting biographies have a mixed reputation in literary and scholarly circles. Often denigrated for their allegedly formulaic style, they have also been criticised for their lack of insight into New Zealand society.1 Representative of this critique is Lloyd Jones, who wrote in 1999, “sport hardly earns a mention in our wider literature, and … the rest of society is rarely, if ever, admitted to our sports literature.”2 This article examines this perspective, arguing that sporting biographies afford a valuable insight into New Zealand’s changing self- image and values. Moreover, it will be argued that the nature of sporting biographies themselves has changed significantly since the 1980s and that they have become much more open in their discussion of teammates and the personal lives of their subjects. Whatever one’s perspective on the literary merits of sporting biographies, their popular appeal is undeniable. Whereas the print run of most scholarly texts in New Zealand is at best a few thousand, sporting biographies consistently sell in the tens of thousands. -
