Mrs Gillespie says she ini- tially looked at the premises to develop herself, but felt it was such a large space it required a team effort. “Nikki and I have worked together in a number of other cafes, so we knew we could successfully tackle this project together.” Many years ago the premises was used as a restaurant, but in recent times it had been

PAGE 8 Te Awamutu Courier, Thursday, July 6, 2006 ljhooker.com Ken Hagan Named L.J. Hooker Franchise Owner Of The Year Te Awamutu Offi ce also leads in community relationships and growth Ken and Heather Hagan L.J. Hooker has given its most coveted award, Franchise Owner of the Year, to Ken Hagan of L.J. Hooker Te Awamutu. The award recognises achievements for service to the community, to customers and to the company, as well as the franchise's operational success and profi le in the market place. His offi ce also won fi rst place for community relationships and commission growth. Salesperson Ian Jones also took a top award for individual income growth, giving the Te Awamutu offi ce a total of four major L.J. Hooker awards for the year. Mr Hagan is president of L.J. Hooker's Rural Chapter and a member of L.J.. Hooker's prestigious Multi-Million dollar chapter of the Captain Club, which recognizes sales achievements. The awards were announced 24 June in for the company's network of 90 franchise offi ces throughout New Zealand. The awards were based on performance in the year to 30 April 2006, "I am elated by this award and the recognition the offi ce has received by L.J. Hooker. It is quite an honour," Mr Hagan said. "It is not something I set out to do, it just evolved out of our hard work as a team and out of our involvement in the community." Mr Hagan said his offi ce decided to join in on some community charity projects fi ve years ago, and they continue with them every year because the team get so much enjoyment and satisfaction from the effort. One of the offi ce's major efforts is organizing a community garage sale each year. Staff members collect and sell the gear and give up two days to man the operation. Proceeds are donated to Cystic Fibrosis. The offi ce also sponsors "Keep Te Awamutu Beautiful", "Te Awamutu Alive", "Christmas Lights" programs, and other various organisations as well as most weekends loans out its L.J Hooker marquee for various community events. "Our team get a buzz from helping out, and it's a great way to say thank you and give something back to the community. I am also fortunate to have exceptional people around me including Diane Tyer who is the Principal, without these people their professionalism, and the environment we work in our success would not be what is it today", Mr Hagan said.

Warren McCarty, L.J. Hookers Managing Director, said L.J. Hooker Te Awamutu is an exem- plary business in every respect. "Mr Hagan runs a hugely successful operation with a fast growing offi ce. He leads a dedicated team including several of our top ranked salespeople in the nation. He constantly seeks to improve his operations and his service to his custom- ers, and strives to develop his staff through training and education. His offi ce also supports numerous community activities." "L.J. Hooker offi ces are an integral part of their communities having realised the reciprocal benefi ts of a close relationship," Mr McCarthy continued. Mr Hagan is a consummate real estate professional, leading a team that is proud of its local community and is keen to offer L.J. Hooker customers a complete real estate service."

‘Freddy’ back by popular demand Redoubt patrons have asked...so Freddy Mercury (aka Steve Larkins - right) is back this Friday night. His show ‘Mercury Rising’ has punters sing- ing along, dancing in the aisles (if there were some) and laughing until they drop. Over the past 25 years Larkins has played keyboards and sung with Dave Dobbyn, When the Cat’s Away, Dave McCartney, Ardijah, Midge Marsden, Ray Colombus and Tom Shar- plin.

CINEMA SCENE Click An age-old philosophical conundrum arises in this Adam Sandler comedy: if you can con- trol time, how best to manipulate it so that it doesn’t impact the universe in an adverse way? A workaholic architect, who has been over- looking his family in favour of his career, comes across a universal remote that allows him total control over his life, such as pausing events or fast-forwarding over them. When the remote begins creating its own memory and choosing what to fast-forward over, the man sees how much of his personal life has passed him by and realizes the impor- tance of spending more time with his family.
