BRACE OF GOLDS for Craig Holmes at the Waikato age group swimming championships. He and Hayden McCormick will represent Te Awamutu at this weekend’s national junior championships in Auckland. By Colin Thorsen Endless hours of dedicated training paid off for the small contingent of eight Te Awamutu swim- mers at the Waikato age group championships. Craig Holmes set a fi ne example with two gold medals in the 100m and 200m backstroke for 12 year olds. Coach Kathy Malcolm says Holmes’ brace of golds were ‘won with grit and determination’. “It was just the incentive for Fraser (Arm- strong) and Hannah (Curnow) to go out and win silver medals.” Armstrong claimed his silver in the 12 year boys’ 100m freestyle, while Curnow was second in the girls’ 200m individual medley. Further success went Te Awamutu’s way with Hayden McCormick meeting the qualifying standard for the New Zealand junior champion- ships in the 50m backstroke. He joins fi ve other local swimmers who had pre- viously qualifi ed for the junior nationals on Feb- ruary 19-20 at the Henderson Pool in Auckland. Of the 53 events the eight Te Awamutu swim- mers entered at the Waikato championships, per- sonal best times were achieved in 33 of them. The format was changed for this year’s cham- pionships. Swimmers had to achieve a qualifying time in order to swim in any of the events. If successful, they then had to compete along- side not only the best swimmers in the Waikato, but also outside the region after it became an open championship. Malcolm says her swimmers had to achieve a high standard just to make the fi nals. Besides the three medallists, Te Awamutu was represented by Daniel Holmes, Hayden Jenkins, Robyn Tuck, Jason Tuck and Hayden McCor- mick. Baker bubble bursts Leanne Baker won her eighth consecutive sin- gles match in the past fortnight to reach the semi- fi nals of the $14,259 International Tennis Federa- tion (ITF) Futures tournament in Blenhiem. The seventh seed was eliminated by fourth seed Kyung-Mi Chang of Korea 6-4, 6-1. She was unable to recapture the form that saw her win the opening Futures tournament in Wel- lington last week. Baker, a doubles specialist with a current world ranking of 109, says the eight singles matches she won was one of her best efforts for several years. She now has a week off before returning to the WTA Tour and second tier events at Doha and 048TC035/05 Dubai later in the month.
