  • From Chronology to Confessional: New Zealand Sporting Biographies in Transition
From Chronology to Confessional: New Zealand Sporting Biographies in Transition GEOFF WATSON Abstract Formerly rather uniform in pattern, sporting biographies have evolved significantly since the 1970s, becoming much more open in their criticism of teammates and administrators as well as being more revealing of their subject’s private lives. This article identifies three transitional phases in the genre; a chronological era, extending from the early twentieth century until the 1960s; an indirectly confessional phase between the 1970s and mid 1980s and an openly confessional phase from the mid-1980s. Despite these changes, sporting biographies continue to reinforce the dominant narratives around sport in New Zealand. New Zealand sporting biographies have a mixed reputation in literary and scholarly circles. Often denigrated for their allegedly formulaic style, they have also been criticised for their lack of insight into New Zealand society.1 Representative of this critique is Lloyd Jones, who wrote in 1999, “sport hardly earns a mention in our wider literature, and … the rest of society is rarely, if ever, admitted to our sports literature.”2 This article examines this perspective, arguing that sporting biographies afford a valuable insight into New Zealand’s changing self- image and values. Moreover, it will be argued that the nature of sporting biographies themselves has changed significantly since the 1980s and that they have become much more open in their discussion of teammates and the personal lives of their subjects. Whatever one’s perspective on the literary merits of sporting biographies, their popular appeal is undeniable. Whereas the print run of most scholarly texts in New Zealand is at best a few thousand, sporting biographies consistently sell in the tens of thousands.

Over 220,000 people attended games in 2013 and over 8 million watched the championship on television either live or on highlights. ANZ Championship has a robust sponsorship model with the ANZ Bank being the naming rights sponsor of the competition since its inaugural season. This is supported by Pay TV, with Sky Sports being the Official Broadcaster in New Zealand since its inaugural year and since 2013 in Australia by Fox Sports with SBS providing a Free to Air component. • A New Approach to Measure Perceived Brand Personality Associations Among Consumers
Sport Marketing Quarterly , 2010, 19 , 17-24, © 2010 West Virginia University B A New Approach to Measure r a Perceived Brand Personality n Associations Among Consumers d P Bob Heere e Bob Heere, PhD, is an assistant professor of kinesiology & health education at the University of Texas at Austin. His research r interests include social identity, community development, international sport management issues, and branding. s o Abstract n Brand personality research has made extensive use of factor modeling to grasp the dimensions of brand per - a sonality. Many scholars have adapted this technique to capture the brand personality of an organization. It l is argued in this study that letting consumers associate a brand with a personality through factor modeling i is flawed and anthropomorphic in nature. Therefore, the author proposes a different technique to measure t these associations, by asking managers about what personality associations they implement while marketing y their brand. Based on their responses, a list of associations was compiled and sent out to their fans, to meas - ure the effectiveness of the organization to portray the brand associations. Results indicate that by imple - menting this strategy managers are able to grasp a more precise concept of the perceived personality associations of the brand. In addition, the strategy provided managers with more in-depth information on their brand by measuring the brands’ importance and representativeness among their consumers. Introduction & O’Guinn, 2001).
