Te Awamutu Courier, Tuesday, March 28, 2006 PAGE 9 Leading designer visiting Te Awamutu women have a wonderful opportu- nity to hear leading fashion designer Annah Stret- ton (pictured right) at a breakfast meeting on April 12 in the newly refurbished Whitby Homestead (Ohaupo Road). The Waikato designer who has developed the ‘Annah S’ range, has become a leading force in New Zealand based fashion. She exports orders to clients throughout Aus- tralia, the UK and Europe and has 28 sites of her own within New Zealand. Ms Stretton works with over 120 staff and has a leadership style categorised as decisive and direct. She embraces her team with great pride and works hard to inspire the women around her to be confi dent, challenged and independent. She thrives on challenges herself and her latest was to take over a struggling magazine, which she plans to turn around. Ms Stretton is now the owner and editor of ‘Her Business’ magazine and she has taken on former Te Awamutu Courier graphic design artist Selina Machell to achieve her goal. Although she has an extremely heavy workload, Ms Stretton has two people that always remain at the centre of her focus - her children Sam (17) and Edward (15). Both are regularly involved in her work activi- ties, but she is also fi ercely defensive of the time she makes for all of their school and personal in- volvements. Ms Stretton is also heavily involved with com- munity work, both inside and outside the fashion industry. ‘Better off’ with books It’s never too early to introduce children to books. Scientifi c evidence supports that if children are read to as ba- bies, even in the womb, they are better off. The earlier children are intro- duced to books the better they do in school and long-term in life because it’s such a necessary skill to have. Books can also help bond par- ents and children - so take some time out to share a story ! The local library is always a good place to start if you’re looking for interesting children’s books.
