Winners of the ISPS Handa Halberg Awards Decade Champion announced 25 March 2021 As a key sponsor of the Halberg Foundation (the Foundation), we would like to express our warmest congratulations to the winners of the ISPS Handa Halberg Awards Decade Champion. Named after Olympic champion Sir Murray Halberg (ONZ), the Halberg Awards is the country's pre-eminent event to honour and celebrate New Zealand sporting excellence over the last decade by New Zealand athletes, teams and coaches. The award winners were announced at a gala dinner on Wednesday 24 March at Spark Arena and broadcast live on Sky Sport. The Buddle Findlay Coach of the Decade award was presented to canoe coach Gordon Walker, who led Lisa Carrington to become the first New Zealand female to win multiple medals at a single Olympics in Rio in 2016. Walker also coached four boats to win gold at the 2017 Canoe Sprint World Championships and Carrington to her gold medal in the K1 200m at the same event. He also coached the New Zealand’s women’s team to five medals at the 2018 Canoe Sprint World Championships in Portugal and Carrington to win the K1 200m. Walker is pictured below with partners Lisette Hood and Sherridan Cook. • Vennell in Yellow Jersey
Press Release (For immediate release) October 31, 2011 Vennell in yellow jersey Dominating the sprint finish in stage one of the 2011 PowerNet Tour of Southland saw Ascot Park Hotel’s Clinton Avery avenge a “one inch loss” he suffered last year. After enduring 160km of energy-sapping crosswinds, the Rotorua rider held off a strong challenge from the chasing group to claim the win in Lumsden. “Long, hard, miserable – that pretty much sums up that stage,” he said. “Once we got in those valleys, it started to channel the wind a bit more so we had to toughen up a little bit. “I got second here last year by about one inch to (Hayden) Roulston so it’s nice.” Motivated by Tour veteran Gordon McCauley, of Barry Stewart Builders-GMC, an early breakaway group of nine riders was left to its own devices and managed to rack up a lead of nearly 8 minutes by the halfway mark. After remaining largely unreactive for the majority of the stage, the peloton dug deep and successfully reeled them in with just over 20km remaining, prompting a final group of six to strike out for the finish line. “It started to come back pretty quickly when we stepped on the gas,” Avery said. Calder Stewart’s Jeremy Vennell was thrust into yellow with the powerful team content to share the coveted jersey amongst its ranks. “It’s a really nice surprise. I wasn’t expecting to be in yellow after today … I was just lucky enough to get in the move at the finish,” Vennell said.

  • Totally Oarsome…
Leander New s Leander Club Newslette r Winter 2010 Totally Oarsome… Leander has had another very strong year in 2010. We have produced winning crews at every level and with the World Championships less than a week away, there is promise of yet more success for Leander athletes and coaches in New Zealand. These Championships are two months later than usual to fit in with the New Zealand summer, and as a result it seems strange to be reflecting on the season thus far when it is not yet finished. One of the positives of this situation is that it reduces the amount of winter training that many of us will have to do for the 2011 season! The most recent addition to the team is Beijing silver medallist Debbie Flood, who following a training camp in Germany has been confirmed as competing in the women’s quad - the boat in which she has twice won silver at successive Olympic Games. Leander won four trophies in total, and in my first year as Captain it was exciting to experience the nerves and excitement of the Regatta as a spectator.
