Honors English 10 & Integrated Honors Summer Reading 2016-17 Instructors: Mr. Crean and Mr. Ruiz

Note to students:

1. Consider this to be a “Pre-AP” class. This means that you can expect an extremely high level of rigor. As a result, it is crucial that you are willing to put in the time, energy, and disciplined required for you to get the most out of this course. 2. Summer reading is an essential aspect of any Honors or AP course. It also happens to be a requirement. ​ It’s not optional. There will be no accepted excuses for not completing the summer work. If you feel, at ​ ​ any time, that you are unable or unwilling to complete the summer work in its entirety, please contact your counselor immediately. 3. Students will be assessed on their reading throughout the summer. There will be a strict reading and writing schedule, so it is important that you budget your time wisely so as to not be overwhelmed.

Please print and read the following documents. The information in these documents will be a part of your summer assignments and discussions, and will also be the foundation for much of the work we do in this course.

You are strongly encouraged to purchase your own copies of these texts so that you can annotate them as you read, a critical skill for any AP student in any number of disciplines. We do have a limited number of copies of Purple Hibiscus and All Quiet on the Western Front available in the library. ​ ​ ​

Purple Hibiscus Reading Schedule:

Siddhartha: May 30th-June 13th ​ ● This book is incredibly short. It is also incredibly challenging. Please be prepared to struggle with this. It would benefit you to keep a list of the religious terminology mentioned repeatedly in the . You might also want to take a few moments to compare and contrast Hinduism and Buddhism. We will explore these ideas in more depth in class, but it can’t hurt to start familiarizing yourself with these concepts now.

All Quiet on the Western Front: June 13th-July 8th ​

Purple Hibiscus: July 11-August 5th ​

Formative Assessments:

During the periods of time listed above, you will be asked to participate in a discussion board on turnitin.com (see directions on the next page). For each novel there will be three questions ​ posted. To receive full credit for each module, you must do the following: ​

1. Respond to one of the questions in a response of 300-400 words. Responses will be ​ ​ ​ ​ assessed on: a. Direct response to a specific prompt b. Use of a precise claim that is supported by cited textual evidence c. Adherence to formal standards of written, academic English

2. Respond to a peer’s post, focusing on the content of what they say, areas of agreement/disagreement, and moving the discussion forward. These responses should be 100-200 words. (You are NOT to criticize a student’s writing style or grammar).

3. The discussion prompts for a given novel will only be active during the time frames listed above. For example, you will not be able to respond to the prompts for Siddhartha after ​ ​ June 13th. Failure to complete complete the responses in a timely fashion will negatively impact your grade, so please budget your time wisely.

Summative Assessments:

● Comprehension level exams on all three ● Exams on Elements of Style/Archetypes and Symbols ● Thematic analysis essay using at least two of the three assigned novels.

1. Log in to turnitin.com. If you have not yet created an account, please do so using a personal email address.

2. Add yourself to the appropriate class based on your last name:

3. Once you have enrolled in the class, you will click on the discussion tab to view the different topics for each novel.

4. Using the attached form, record your participation so that the teacher can easily find and evaluate your post.

5. Plagiarism, defined as borrowing ideas from outside sources or other students, will be reported to administration for disciplinary action and possible removal from the Honors class.
