For more information, please contact [email protected] Franco-American Cultures in a New World Perspective Jonathan Gosnell, Smith College Over forty prominent novelists from around the world signed a media petition in 2007 expressing their support for a new cosmopolitan definition of literature written in French. Rejecting the categorization “francophone” as devaluing, they demanded recognition of a “littérature-monde en français,” a world literature in French attentive to new voices from the postcolony, or what in this essay I will call a “worldly” literature in French. A book quickly emerged following the manifesto, reassembling petitioners and rearticulating their positions, which call into question the French republican narrative.1 In it they ask: Is French cultural production too narrowly defined? In response, scholars have organized conferences and special journal issues to further explore this broad conception of French literature.2 If writers, journalists, and even politicians have made much ado over the “littérature- monde en français” debate, it is because what is at issue is how French culture and identity are to be defined in the twenty-first century. -

Renouncing the non-Anglo elements of one's back ground has been the traditional, if gradual process imposed upon immigrants and their descendants. The fact that one's employer spoke only English and that one was in some cases surrounded by English-speaking neighbors and in all cases by English-dominated media has provided the incessant pressure toward assimilation. Such has been the fate of those whose ancestors came from French Canada to the United States. -

YVES ROBY QUEBEC IN THE UNITED STATES: A HISTORIOGRAPHICAL SURVEY During the period 1840-1930 approximately 900,000 peo ple left Quebec for the United States, most of them settling in the main industrial centers of the northeastern states. This event is rich in documentation. Hundreds, not to say thou sands, of commentaries, studies, and analyses were left to us by the observers, the witnesses, and the actors in this epic adven ture.1 Nevertheless, authors describing the general history of immigration to the United States traditionally ignored the Franco-American experience or mentioned it only in a few casual footnote references.2 Only recently has French- Canadian migration attracted the attention of Canadian and American university scholars. Today, a constantly increasing number of specialized studies is appearing on both sides of the border. -
