Please sign below, and give address and date. iii Abstract Almost thirty years after the publication of Robert Conrad’s landmark article “Neither Slave Nor Free: the emancipados of Brazil,” this study of the liberated Africans in Brazil revisits and examines in greater detail the realities of life on the frontier between slavery and freedom in the light of the new scholarship on slavery and abolition in the Americas, Brazilian socio-economic history, and British imperial policy. It focuses on the experience of the 11,000 Africans who were technically emancipated between 1821 and 1856 because of being brought illegally into Brazil after the prohibition of the slave trade, and it assesses the extent to which they were actually able to enjoy freedom. Like other groups of liberated Africans in territories around the Atlantic, the Brazilian africanos livres fell into a special legal category and experienced special labour arrangements. They were put in the custody of the Brazilian government to work as “servants or free labourers” for 14 years, but some were kept for 30 years before being able to enjoy full freedom. The chapters follow the liberated Africans’ distinct trajectory and the phases of their personal lives. They explore the circumstances of their nominal emancipation on arrival, the principles of their guardianship and distribution for service, their labour experience, the alternative freedom proposed by the British government, and their struggle for their final emancipation in the 1850s and 1860s. British Foreign Office correspondence and Brazilian Ministry of Justice records of the liberated Africans’ daily lives reveal the conflicts over the meanings attributed to their “freedom.” While the British government expected the liberated Africans to be engaged as free wage labourers and to enjoy civil citizenship, the Brazilian government kept them as involuntary labourers with no real autonomy. The reasons for the limitations imposed on the liberated Africans’ freedom can be found in the place reserved for virtually all Africans within Brazilian society because of the continuation of the Brazilian slave trade despite its formal prohibition, and in the effect that the presence of liberated Africans had on the Africans who continued to be kept in illegal slavery. In the larger view, this study provides a new interpretation of the impact of British abolitionist policy on Brazilian slavery and addresses the limits of freedom in the century which saw the destruction of the Atlantic slave systems but not the rise of free wage labour and full citizenship for people of African descent living in the Americas. iv Acknowledgments The present work would have been impossible without financial support from CAPES (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior, an agency of the Brazilian Ministry of Education) from 1993 to 1997; from my father, Armen Mamigonian, during the research years; and from the University of Waterloo over the past months. His plays are constantly performed on the world’s stages, while a plethora of translations into the most diverse of languages have been published and continue to be published at an ever faster pace all over the world. Brazil is no exception: after tentative beginnings in the nineteenth century, with translations of selected passages and excerpts, Shakespeare’s works soon awakened the keen interest of poets, translators,dilettantes and publishers, leading to the publication of the whole dramatic canon in Brazilian Portuguese in the 10.17771/PUCRio.TradRev.19729 1950s (by Carlos Alberto Nunes), the 1960s (by Fernando Carlos de Almeida Cunha Medeiros and Oscar Mendes) and most likely by 2013 (by Barbara Heliodora), besides the coming out of new renderings of individual plays by different translators. In the year 2010 alone twelve new such translations were published. Shakespeare’s plays were firstrendered into Brazilian Portuguese in the nineteenth century, commissioned by the theater company owned by João Caetano, an actor-manager who was “at the center of Brazilian dramatic activity for at least three decades (1835-1863)[and] may be accorded the title of ‘father’ of the Brazilian national theater” (O’Shea2005, p. 25). Interestingly, a number ofsuch translations were indirect, having a French rendering as a source text. Caetano staged Hamlet for the first time in 1835, translated directly from an English original. Due to the negative response of the audience to this version, he thenturned to indirect translations from the French, most of them imitations by Jean-François Ducis— not only of Hamlet but also of Othello and Macbeth, obtaininggreat commercial successand coming under stringent criticisms from Brazilian poets and writers (Gomes 1960, p.

It is divided into three sections. The first, Policies, presents a new interpretation of the political framework underwhich slave-trade suppression was executed. Section II, Practices, examines details of the work of the navy’s West African Squadronwhich have been passed over in earlier narrativeaccounts. Section III, Representations, provides the first sustained discussion of the squadron’s wider, cultural significance, and its role in the shaping of geographical knowledge of West Africa.One of our objectives in looking across these three areas—a view from shore to ship and back again--is to understand better how they overlap. Neto da lendária Bárbara de Alencar, cujo nome se prende às revoltas libertárias das províncias do Norte, e filho de um padre que abandonou a batina para dedicar-se à carreira política, mudou-se ainda menino para a corte, onde iniciou seus estudos, e formou-se na academia de direito de São Paulo, tendo sido contemporâneo de Álvares de Azevedo (1831-1852), Bernardo Guimarães (1825-1884) e Francisco Otaviano (1825-1889). Vivendo numa época em que os princípios da estética romântica já vinham sendo introduzidos no Brasil pela geração de Gonçalves de Magalhães (1811-1882), alinhou-se ao projeto imperial de construção da nação fundada em 1822 e participou ativamente da vida pública do seu tempo, empenhando-se em atividades distintas, como o jornalismo, a política (foi deputado pelo partido conservador e chegou a ocupar, por um breve período, o cargo de ministro da justiça do gabinete Itaboraí), a advocacia e, sobretudo, a literatura, graças à qual seu nome chega até os dias de hoje.     EXPERIÊNCIAS ENTRE A ESCRAVIDÃO E A LIBERDADE: OS AFRICANOS LIVRES NA PROVÍNCIA DE ALAGOAS (1850-1864) MOISÉS SEBASTIÃO DA SILVA Uma análise da produção historiográfica alagoana revela que as camadas subalternizadas da sociedade alagoana seguem marginalizadas também quando o assunto é a escrita da História. Especificamente em relação à experiência negra, enquanto a partir de meados dos anos 1980 em termos de Brasil vivenciou-se o surgimento de uma expressiva produção, a qual passou a ser caracterizada como um novo momento da historiografia relativa ao tema – que, hoje, desfruta de um lugar de destaque, sendo um dos mais pesquisados no país –, em Alagoas a mesma permaneceu invisibilizada.1 Composta basicamente por alguns poucos ensaios que têm como data limite de sua produção meados da década de 70 (BRANDÃO, 1988; DUARTE, 1988 [1966]; LIMA JR., 1975), a historiografia alagoana, ainda distante dos ganhos teóricos e metodológicos obtidos na área nos últimos anos, busca dar então apenas os primeiros passos.2 O trabalho que ora se apresenta é, portanto, um desdobramento de um esforço que, na medida das dificuldades da realização de pesquisa histórica no Estado de Alagoas, buscou tocar essa realidade lacunar da historiografia alagoana sobre a escravidão, e que basicamente consistiu em explorar a problemática das fontes para a história da escravidão em Alagoas.3 Foi ali que nos deparamos com alguns acervos documentais e, consequentemente, com o objeto deste nosso trabalho, a categoria sociojurídica africano livre. Abstract For most of the nineteenth-century, the Brazilian liberal elites found in the ‘modernity’ of the European Enlightenment all that they considered best at the time. Britain and France, in particular, provided them with the paradigms of a modern civilisation. This thesis, however, challenges and complements this view by demonstrating that as early as the 1860s the United States began to emerge as a new model of civilisation in the Brazilian debate about modernisation. The general picture portrayed by the historiography of nineteenth-century Brazil is still today inclined to overlook the meaningful place that U.S. society had from as early as the 1860s in the Brazilian imagination regarding the concept of a modern society. This thesis shows how the images of the United States were a pivotal source of political and cultural inspiration for the political and intellectual elites of the second half of the nineteenth century concerned with the modernisation of Brazil. Drawing primarily on parliamentary debates, newspaper articles, diplomatic correspondence, books, student journals and textual and pictorial advertisements in newspapers, this dissertation analyses four different dimensions of the Brazilian representations of the United States. They are: the abolition of slavery, political and civil freedoms, democratic access to scientific and applied education, and democratic access to goods of consumption.

    Entre a sociedade e a política: a produção intelectual de Arthur Azevedo (1873-1897) Giselle Pereira Nicolau* Arthur Azevedo viveu uma época de mudanças. Nascido em São Luís do Maranhão, em 14 de julho de 1855, este deixou a terra natal aos 18 anos, em busca de oportunidades na Corte.1 No Rio de Janeiro, foi jornalista, cronista e funcionário público, mas destacou-se como autor de teatro. Arthur testemunhou a passagem do Império à República, fazendo desse conjunto de acontecimentos, matéria e cenário para suas crônicas, contos e peças teatrais, em especial, em suas Revistas de Ano. Quando chegou ao Rio de Janeiro em 1873, com o objetivo de trabalhar no jornalismo e no teatro, o jovem de apenas 18 anos, iniciou suas atividades na folha A Reforma, dirigido por Joaquim Serra,2 um dos precursores da moderna imprensa política brasileira. Periódico de cunho liberal tinha, entre os colaboradores, nomes como os de Joaquim Nabuco, Rodrigo Otávio e Cesário Alvim. A redação do semanário era ponto de encontro de políticos, como Francisco Otaviano, Afonso Celso, que posteriormente veio a se tornar o Visconde Ouro Preto, e Tavares Bastos, além de outras figuras ligadas ao Partido Liberal. Não obstante a baixa remuneração, o trabalho jornalístico abria as portas para jovens que desejavam seguir carreira literária. Algo muito comum nessa época, o apadrinhamento ou mecenato, para usar a expressão de Machado Neto, dava oportunidades na imprensa para jovens que desejavam ganhar a vida com as letras (NETO, 1973: 11). Com Arthur Azevedo não ocorreu de outra maneira. Recém-chegado do Maranhão, onde havia desempenhado funções de jornalista, encontrou espaço no periodismo carioca, por intermédio de seu conterrâneo, Joaquim Serra.

I intend to consider two regional factors that influenced the decision of both the Cayenne Government and the metropolitan government to build military forts in the region. Such factors are the Cabanagem and the attempts of black Bonis to settle in Lower Oiapoque. I will go on to show that the French withdrawal from Amapá Lake in 1840, but not from the post on the right bank of the Oiapoque River, was due not only to international and diplomatic factors but also had regional causes. Notwithstanding the French government's interests in expanding the territory of its South American colony, I want to draw attention to the threats - real or fictitious - of Cabanos, from Brazil, and black Bonis, from Dutch Guiana. 1 This article forms part of a research project funded by Gerda Henkel Foundation (Germany) about the region of the French-Brazilian Boarding between 1840-1900. I expose the colonialist traditions of selective memory, the ones that determine which histories deserve the attention of professional historians, philosophers, novelists, artists and filmmakers. In addition to their capacity to comfort and entertain, films also serve to inform, shape and influence public consciousness. Central to the thesis, therefore, is an analysis of contemporary filmic representations and denials of Haiti and the Haitian Revolution. I employ a research design that examines the relationship between depictions of Haiti and the country’s colonial experience, as well as the revolution that reshaped that experience. I address two main questions related to the revolution and its connection to the age of modernity. The first concerns an examination of how Haiti has contributed to the production of modernity while the second investigates what it means to remove Haiti from this production of modernity. I aim to unsettle the hegemonic understanding of modernity as the sole creation of the West. The thrust of my argument is that the Haitian Revolution created the space where a re-articulation of the human could be possible.

Analyzing the rural labor movement’s historical contributions to the land struggle in Brazil, this contribution has been organized into three main periods, emphasizing social relations, institutional activism and policy changes. It argues that despite the peculiarities of different historical contexts, rural labor consistently provoked protest against policies that privileged large landholders, whose concentration of power over land and labor resources continually worsened Brazil’s ranking as one of the most unequal of nations. For more than half a century, the most constant opponent of this situation among the peasantry has been the National Confederation of Workers in Agriculture (CONTAG), a corporatist organization of rural labor unions founded in 1963.
