  • Role of Corporate Goverance and Sebi : a Critical Analysis
Journal of Xi'an University of Architecture & Technology Issn No : 1006-7930 ROLE OF CORPORATE GOVERANCE AND SEBI : A CRITICAL ANALYSIS Dr. Neetu Prakash Assistant Professor, Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Model Town, Ludhiana ABSTRACT Corporate frauds or financial crimes or financial frauds can be classified as white-collar crimes, which represent the illegal acts that are characterized by deceit, concealment or violation of trust. The fraudulent exercises practiced by Enron, WorldCom and Martha Steward shook the world. Of these scandals, the Enron accounting scandal was the most infamous one. There were similar allegations against the WorldCom Company, whose CEO Bernard Ebbers hid an expenditure of $11 bn; later this led the company to bankruptcy. Frauds have occurred in almost every country in the world, in almost every sector, including banking, insurance, telecom, automobile industry, health, and the list is endless. The growing focus on cross-border expansion, high levels of growth with internal processes not keeping pace and large number of new employees joining the organization are making most companies vulnerable to greater fraud risk in recent times. The IT hackers and fraudsters can pose a significant threat of a financial crime. Cyber-crimes, economic crimes, ethical crimes, falsification of accounts by showing inflated profits, breach of fiduciary duty, breach of confidential information, non- disclosure of material facts etc. are causing enormous harm to the rights and interests or the society. Every such corporate fraud is a heinous crime against humanity, as it adversely affects and ruins the fortunes of large segments of innocent people. There are several adverse consequences of financial crimes.

  • A Dynasty Returns to Rule Bihar
A Dynasty Returns to Rule Bihar Govind Bhattacharjee1 The Statesman November 24, 2015 With the resounding defeat of NDA in Bihar elections, the outraged feelings of secular liberals of our country have at last been assuaged. The talk of growing intolerance has disappeared almost overnight, and no more awards are being returned by the eminent recipients of various national awards. Just as the motor-mouths in BPJ have stopped issuing daily vitriolic statements condemning the slaughterers of gau- mata and their perceived sympathisers, the fervor of others in a matching tit-for-tat demonstration of the consumption of her meat in public also seems to have evaporated, reminding one of the Rubaiyat-I-Omar- Khayyam, ‘I came like water and like wind I go.’ We all can now breathe a great sigh of relief – India is no longer intolerant and communal. It has again become a benevolent, vibrant and secular democracy as it has always been. As Mr. Jay Panda, an MP from Odisha, wrote, perceptions do matter and it was no coincidence that the narrative of rising intolerance always seemed to peak around the elections, steered mostly by the non-vernacular media that is a safe sanctuary for our elites and liberals, despite the fact that on an average, two communal incidents had occurred per day during 2011-13 before NDA had come to power. Intolerance is perhaps embedded in Indian psyche since the beginning of time - what was the caste system but intolerance against humanity itself, against the very notion that all men are born equal? Many commentators had pointed out that one had never heard of so much talk about intolerance during the countless communal riots that had happened in this country since independence, during Sikh riots in 1984, Babri Masjid in 1992 or Godhra and Gujrat in 2002, even if we ignore the imposition of Emergency of 1977, and all that had followed in its wake including the compulsory sterilisation of Muslims, as a temporary aberration.

© 2015 JETIR July 2015, Volume 2, Issue 7 www.jetir.org (ISSN-2349-5162) Major Scams in India since 1947: A Brief Sketch Naveen Kumar Research Scholar Deptt. of History B.R.A.B.U. Muzaffarpur "I would go to the length of giving the whole congress a decent burial, rather than put up with the corruption that is rampant." - Mahatma Gandhi. This was the outburst of Mahatma Gandhi against rampant corruption in Congress ministries formed under 1935 Act in six states in the year 1937.1 The disciples of Gandhi however, ignored his concern over corruption in post-Independence India, when they came to power. Over fifty years of democratic rule has made the people so immune to corruption that they have learnt how to live with the system even though the cancerous growth of this malady may finally kill it. Politicians are fully aware of the corruption and nepotism as the main reasons behind the fall of Roman empire,2 the French Revolution,3 October Revolution in Russia,"4 fall of Chiang Kai-Sheik Government on the mainland of China5 and even the defeat of the mighty Congress party in India.6 But they are not ready to take any lesson from the pages of history. JEEP PURCHASE (1948) The history of corruption in post-Independence India starts with the Jeep scandal in 1948, when a transaction concerning purchase of jeeps for the army needed for Kashmir operation was entered into by V.K.Krishna Menon, the then High Commissioner for India in London with a foreign firm without observing normal procedure.7 Contrary to the demand of the opposition for judicial inquiry as suggested by the Inquiry Committee led by Ananthsayanam Ayyangar, the then Government announced on September 30, 1955 that the Jeep scandal case was closed.
