    ABSTRACT Title: Harold Pint.erlsPlay with Form: A Cross-Media Analvsis of His Texts. Degree: Doctor of Philosophy, 1997. Colette Barbara Stoeber Graduate Centre for Study of Drama University of Toronto Harold Pinter has taken fourteen of his twenty-eight dramatic texts through some process of formal adaptation across media: narrative fiction to radio and television; radio to stage and television; television to stage; or stage to film and television. This thesis examines Pinter's perpetual manipulation of form and content and the media through which they are expressed. Moving through a detailed analysis of thirteen of his works and their adaptations, this study examines Pinter's methodology in this process in a more focused and comprehensive manner than has been attempted in Pinter scholarship to this date. Pinter's work is of particular interest in a study of cross-media adaptation, for the self-consciousness of his preoccupation with his own modes of expression combined with his thematic concerns about the control and expression of meaning tie the form and content of his work and the medium through which they are expressed in a very explicit way. Since the medium is so bound to Pinter's meaning, when the medium changes the play's thematics are often significantly altered. This study is organized into chapter headings according to the originally intended medium: narrative fiction, radio, television, and the stage. Each chapter first considers the original texts, focusing particularly on how meaning has been shaped and influenced by the intended mode of expression. I then turn to examine Pinter's manipulation of form and content through adaptation, in the process of which the meaning of the texts will be reconsidered in light of the new medium.

You have recorded your experiences in a way that is perhaps not possible in more formal histories, and, while not departing from the authenticity of events, by your personal reactions you have added an outstanding account of the human factors which are ultimately so important.1 In 1963, Second World War veteran Graeme Ogden’s memoir of war- time naval service entered a fast- flowing tide of personal narratives published by British military personnel who had fought in that con- flict. Throughout the seven decades since the end of the Second World War, increasing numbers of these books appeared in print and became cemented into what Graham Dawson identifies as an enduring popu- lar ‘pleasure- culture of war’ in Britain.2 Yet as Rear- Admiral Rupert Sherbrooke’s foreword to Ogden’s My Sea Lady articulates, they also proffer an immense value to the social and cultural historian of warfare. Positioning published veteran memoirs as repositories of vital informa- tion about the ways in which former servicemen remembered, under- stood, and mediated their war, The Veterans’ Tale establishes the unique contribution of post-war published military memoirs to the aggregate of scholarship of modern war and memory. Back in England to take his pilot’s certificate his leg was injured in a flying accident. He was recalled to his former regiment, but his damaged leg was affected by conditions in the trenches, and he was invalided out of the war in 1916.

Signed: 2 ABSTRACT Despite the emergence of a wide gamut of British experimental writing from the late-1950s through to the mid-1970s, there was a consensus that this particular type of writing constituted a ‘“useless” activity’. This was the conclusion not only amongst the various newspaper critics who frequently criticised the Arts Council for supporting ‘hippy art’, but amongst experimental writers themselves, such as Eva Figes (whose remark this was, used when she described her occupation as a novelist in the Guardian in 1968). The experimental writing of this period is fraught with an anxiety about its own uselessness. This thesis argues that this was symptomatic of a unique period in British literary history when traditional notions about work—and what ‘worked’ in terms of literature—were radically scrutinised and reassessed. The Concept of Work in Post-war British Experimental Writing proposes that only with an understanding of the British avant-garde’s engagement with the idea of work and its various corollaries can we fully appreciate the contribution to the development of the modern British novel during the mid-twentieth-century made by these writers, and to probe some of the reasons for their move away from realism.
