Buffalo 1901 The Assassination of President William McKinley Shortly after 4 PM on the afternoon of 6 September 1901, President William McKinley stood on the stage of the Temple of Music to greet the last group of well wishers who had waited in line to shake his hand at a public reception. McKinley reached out to a 28 year old man who was holding a handkerchief in his hand, not unusual since the day was rather hot and humid. But Leon Czolgosz had a 32 caliber revolver concealed under his handkerchief. Two shots rang out, the first nicked a button on the President’s vest and glanced off his chest, the second penetrated his stomach. Pandemonium ensued. One of the guards named O’Brien, and James Parker, a tall black man waiting in the line just behind Czolgosz, immediately grabbed the assassin and began punching him in the face. Czolgosz fell to the floor and other guards joined in. Czolgosz, in the words of an eye witness, was a “bloody mess”. Another guard grabbed the revolver out of Czolgosz’s right hand. The beating would have continued, had McKinley not said "Go easy on him boys" or "Don't let them hurt him". Whatever the exact words, they saved Czolgosz's life, at least temporarily. The guards stopped their assault and the President's health was given priority. The officials on the stage with McKinley eased him onto the floor. Word quickly spread of the shooting, and mob mentality took over, with crowds outside beating on the door and shouting death threats for the shooter. -

Civic Flag Policy Date Authorised by Council: 10 March 2021 Commencement Date: 11 March 2021 Review Date (4 years from authorised date): March 2025 Responsible Department Governance and Strategy This policy has been adopted by Council. 1 INTRODUCTION The flying of flags is a visible symbol of respect and acknowledgement. Every sovereign nation flies its own national flag as the symbol of the country, of the people, of the ideals and beliefs that those people live by and proclaim. Flying the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags demonstrates Council’s recognition of First Nation peoples and demonstrates our respect and acknowledgement. The flags that are to be flown permanently pursuant to this policy are the Australian National Flag, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Flags and the Moreland City Council Flag. The Moreland City Council Flag will be substituted with other flags of significance as required by the Community Flag Schedule. Flags flown in accordance with the Community Flag Schedule will be flown in accordance with the relevant protocol and Council resolution. 2 CONTEXT 2.1 Alignment • The Flags Act 1953 • Australian National Flag protocol 3 OBJECTIVES To clearly outline Council’s approach to the flying of the flags at Council’s Town Halls and other facilities and to establish a mechanism to consider requests for flying of flags of significant to the Moreland community. 4 POLICY DETAILS 4.1 AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL FLAG The Australian National Flag is the chief national symbol and was raised for the first time on 3 September 1901 in the presence of the first Australian Prime Minister, the Hon. -

“Nurturing the Dream” By Susan Shelton Mural Imagery Key Top Section: The quotes reflect the overall theme of the mural: the importance of finding a balance between the work we do as students, workers, activists, and caregivers, and the time needed for reflection, nourishment of the spirit and restoration of strength. The large rectangular tiles on pillars A, B, C, D are inspired by Wangari Maathai’s “I Will be a Hummingbird” story. This folk tale poignantly illustrates the importance of doing one’s best, no matter how insignificant our efforts may feel at times, in the face of a seemingly insurmountable task. Pillars: The mural pillars showcase the conceptual and artistic participation of the students and staff of the Student Community Center, and other members of the university community, who were invited to contribute their suggestions for the imagery featured, and who also participated in painting the individual tiles. The tiles represent the various identities, paths, goals, causes and struggles of the students: academic, social, personal and political. Pillar A: 1. World View: North and South America 2. I note, with considerable satisfaction, the detail presented by the Chief of the Defence Force, Chief of Navy, Maritime Commander and Commander, Australian Naval Aviation Group in previous editions of Slipstream. The picture they were able to present demonstrates the significant enhancements currently being made to the Fleet Air Arm - in terms of equipment and facilities. We are indeed fortunate to have such an expansion of capabilities in /" 0 "" I C2I a time of relative constraint elsewhere in Defence. I would like to focus my comments on the personnel aspects of this expansion , for without the right people, new equipment and facilities are useless . I have to say we are being challenged at the moment to find and retain people for our demanding profession. This is a reflection of the changes in our society. At a recent conference I heard the Warrant Officer of the Navy describe the contemporary sailor. -

Original size: 260.0 x 370.5 cm Gift of the King family, 2001 Collection of the Art Gallery of Ballarat The original Flag of the Southern Cross (The Eureka Flag) can be viewed at the Eureka Centre, on loan from the Art Gallery of Ballarat. It was made in 1854. ORIGINS OF THE FLAG It is not known who designed or made the flag. It is widely believed that it was designed by a Canadian miner, Henry Charles Ross (see Key figures) There are traditional stories which suggest that it may have been sewn by three women – Anne Withers, Anne Duke and Anastasia Hayes (see Women on the goldfields) but there are alternative claims that the claim was made by local tentmakers Edwards and Davis. Neither of these stories have been proven. The flag was first raised at a Ballarat Reform League meeting at Bakery Hill on 29 November 1854. It was then moved to the Eureka Stockade where it was flown until torn down after the battle on 3 December, only five days later. FLAG DESCRIPTION The flag is 2.6 metres high and 4metres wide – more than double the size of a standard flag. The blue fabric is mostly cotton, while wool has been used for the white cross and the stars. The flag is made up of multiple panels of fabric that have been ART stitched together. -

A small isolated country between the mountains and the sea with one castle on the Rock of Monaco, overlooking the entire country. Francesco Grimaldi disguised himself and his men as Franciscan monks and infiltrated the castle to take control. It was not long before Genoan forces succeeded in ousting him. Later his descendents simply bought the castle and the realm from Genoa and turned it into a principality. At this point the flag of Genoa was the St. George’s flag. They allowed England, for a fee, to fly their flag so they could use their sea and ports to trade. The Monaco Coat of Arms has represented the country for as long as the Grimaldi dynasty has been in power, since the early 15th Century. Although the design has changed gradually over the years, the key elements have remained the same. The motto, 'Deo Juvante' is Latin for 'With God's Help'. This coat of arms today serves as the state flag.
