Introduction* In recent years there has been an upsurge of interest among growth economists in General Purpose Technologies (GPTs). A GPT can be defined as "a technology that initially has much scope for improvement and evntually comes to be widely used, to have many uses, and to have many Hicksian and technological complementarities" (Lipsey et al., 1998a, p. 43). Electricity, steam and information and communications technologies (ICT) are generally regarded as being among the most important examples. An interesting aspect of the occasional arrival of new GPTs that dominate macroeconomic outcomes is that they imply that the growth process may be subject to episodes of sharp acceleration and deceleration. The initial impact of a GPT on overall productivity growth is typically minimal and the realization of its eventual potential may take several decades such that the largest growth effects are quite long- delayed, as with electricity in the early twentieth century (David, 1991). Subsequently, as the scope of the technology is finally exhausted, its impact on growth will fade away. If, at that point, a new GPT is yet to be discovered or only in its infancy, a growth slowdown might be observed. A good example of this is taken by the GPT literature to be the hiatus between steam and electricity in the later nineteenth century (Lipsey et al., 1998b), echoing the famous hypothesis first advanced by Phelps-Brown and Handfield-Jones, 1952) to explain the climacteric in British economic growth. -

Generator in a Combined Cycle Power Plant
1 STEAM POWER PLANT 1.1. INTRODUCTION: A Generating station which converts heat energy of coal combustion into electrical energy is known as steam power station. A steam power station basically works on Rankin cycle. Steam is produced in the boiler by utilizing the heat of coal combustion or burning gases or fuel. Fig 1-1: Diagram of a steam power plant 2 Fig 1-2: Block diagram of a steam power plante 1.2. Power plants: Modern-day boilers, such as those in coal-fired power stations, are still fitted with economizers which are descendants of Green's original design. In this context they are often referred to as feed water heaters and heat the condensate from turbines before it is pumped to the boilers. Economizers are commonly used as part of a heat recovery steam generator in a combined cycle power plant. In an HRSG, water passes through an economizer, then a boiler and then a super heater. The economizer also prevents flooding of the boiler with liquid water that is too cold to be boiled given the flow rates and design of the boiler. A common application of economizers in steam power plants is to capture the waster heat from boiler stack gases (flue gas) and transfer it to the boiler feed water. This raises the temperature of the boiler feed water thus lowering the needed energy input, in turn reducing the firing rates to accomplish the rated boiler output. Economizers lower stack temperatures which may cause condensation of acidic combustion gases and serious equipment corrosion damage if care is not taken in their design and material selection 3 Fig 1-3: Block diagram of a steam power plant Elements of steam power plant: 01. -

Richard purchased the strategically well placed Milford Farm in 1991 with the intention of opening his steam collection to the public in the first museum buildings and utilising the workshop facilities to relocate his R. Dingle & Sons contracting business from their historical site in Stoke Climsland. The museum evolved into what is now The Fairground Heritage Trust collection and visitor attraction and the workshop was to become a centre of excellence for the repair and rebuilding of steam engines with Clive Gibbard working under Richard’s direction. Clive has recently retired and moved away and Richard has decided the moment is right to close the workshop business and sell the equipment and stores. That raised the question of who would look after his long cherished engine Conqueror. -

MDWASD 12/2006 SECTION 16425 PORTABLE ENGINE-GENERATOR SETS PART 1 - GENERAL 1.01 REQUIREMENT Furnish and install a portable engine-generator system for use during periods of interruption of normal electrical service. 1.02 SUBMITTALS The Contractor shall submit all applicable submittals listed in Section 16420. 1.03 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. In the best interest of the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department, the supplier of this equipment shall maintain a full-time "in-house" parts and service organization within 50 miles of the job site. Equipment offered by those who do not have an "in house" parts and service organization and who depend on others to provide services shall not be considered. This supplier shall have his name, address and telephone number clearly and visibly located on all equipment. Service shall be available on a 24-hour/7-day a week basis. B. The supplier of the equipment shall provide information and/or supervision required for the proper installation of the equipment, testing of equipment and training of operating personnel. C. All components shall bear UL labels. D. The stand-by system, including the generator set and associated controls shall be designed, fabricated, tested and furnished by one manufacturer to assure one source of responsibility. The manufacturer shall have been regularly engaged in the production of engine-alternator sets and associated controls for a minimum of five years and shall manufacture either the engine, or the generator or both. 1.04 GUARANTEE The equipment furnished under this Specification shall be new, unused, of the latest design. The generator set, associated controls, and automatic load transfer switch shall be warranted for a minimum of five years or 1,500 operating hours whichever comes first. -

Charles Burrell & Sons Limited Administrative History Joseph Burrell founded the business in the late 1770s, setting up originally as a general smith and repairer of agricultural tools in Thetford. He produced ploughs, harrows and rakes. Early in the 19 th century, with his brothers, James and William, he began designing his own patent agricultural machinery. In 1803 his 'improved drill for sowing crushed oat cake manure with wheat, turnips etc' won a silver cup at the Holkham sheep-shearing festival (a forerunner of the great agricultural shows). A small iron and brass foundry was started under James and continued at the St Nicholas foundry. One of James's sons, James junior, had a small shop and foundry, while the other son Charles inherited the family firm. Charles (grandson of the founder) was 20 when he took over in 1837, and was to see the name of Burrell become world-famous during his 69-year 'reign' to his death in 1906. Charles Burrell & Sons, steam and agricultural machinery manufacturers were the first to introduce a practical heavy duty traction engine for use on roads. The firm produced traction engines, steam rollers and ploughing engines. More than 4,000 engines left the works during the life of the firm and many were put in countries around the world. In 1848 Burrell's produced their own single cylinder (SC) portable in 1848 which they exhibited at the Royal Agricultural Show. The firm continued to manufacture other agricultural machinery, and produced the first combined threshing and finishing machine about this time. Burrell joined forces with engineer, James Boydell, to produce the first practical traction engine, a self-moving road engine for pulling loads. -
