STATES OF AFFECT: TRAUMA IN PARTITION/POST-PARTITION SOUTH ASIA By Rituparna Mitra A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of English – Doctor of Philosophy 2015 ABSTRACT STATES OF AFFECT: TRAUMA IN PARTITION/POST-PARTITION SOUTH ASIA By Rituparna Mitra The Partition of the Indian subcontinent – into India and Pakistan in 1947 – was one of the crucial moments marking the break between the colonial and postcolonial era. My project is invested in exploring the Partition not merely in terms of the events of August 1947, but as an ongoing process that continues to splinter political, cultural, emotional and sexual life-worlds in South Asia. My dissertation seeks to map analytical pathways to locate the Partition and the attendant formations of minoritization and sectarian violence as continuing, unfolding processes that constitute postcolonial nation-building. It examines the far-reaching presence of these formations in current configurations of politics, culture and subjectivity by mobilizing the interdisciplinary scope of affect-mediated Trauma and Memory Studies and Postcolonial Studies, in conjunction with literary analysis. My project draws on a wide range of cultural artifacts such as poetry, cantillatory performance, mourning rituals, testimonials, archaeological ruins, short stories and novels to develop a heuristic and affective re-organization of post-Partition South Asia. It seeks to illuminate through frameworks of memory, melancholia, trauma, affect and postcoloniality how the ongoing effects of the past shape the present, which in turn, offers us ways to reimagine the future. This dissertation reaches out to recent work developing a vernacular framework to analyze violence, trauma and loss in South Asia. -

Gracin Liberty University The riches of India’s ancient and diverse culture are proclaimed from the music that communicates the heart of Bharat Mata – Mother India. This sentiment resounds across the vast geographical area of India in songs from Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists, Christians and Bollywood composers. The question of how Christians might express their faith in light of societal, historical and religious amalgamations is the topic of discussion for this project. The inquiry will focus on the music culture of North India, specifically as it is expressed in the city of B_____, Uttar Pradesh. A six week field study was conducted in India to interview Hindu musicians and non-musicians. Audio and video recordings were made of the interviews, and photographs and recordings were made of various performances. Not only are their careers mentally grueling and physically demanding but they also have an added risk of high investment and low returns. The rock genre has struggled to achieve its righteous place in the country whereas folk, qawalli, pop, bhangra and Bollywood music experienced skyrocketing popularity. -

Women’s College Rourkela Odisha India Abstract The Paper goes on to highlight how the memory of the Partition is preserved, and how the creative arts‟ relation to public memory and its place within the public sphere has changed through time. Also presents a nuanced understanding of how the experience of violence, displacement, and trauma shaped postcolonial societies and subjectivities in the Indian subcontinent through the literature produced by the writers of both sides of boundaries. History is not literature and vice versa, but both the genres complement each other. And where history takes rest, literature begins its momentum. Again when literature comes to a halt, from there the quest of history begins. The history behind the facts inspires the writers to create their literary imaginations. Fiction based on history is often symptomatic of the anxieties and dreams of people, which history fails to do. History is an ongoing cultural process and literature, a reflection of ceaseless revelations. Fiction is not just a story that someone spent a bit of time on, it is a bit of what that person has to share with the world, a piece of their light that is clearing up a piece of darkness for someone else. Undivided India, which freed itself from the colonial yoke, and the event of the Partition of the subcontinent are inextricably bound together. Thus, no post-colonial denizen of the subcontinent possessing a sense of history and living in the post-independence era can ignore the pervasive influence and impact of the Partition on contemporary life. -

This study is especially important because current U.S. demographics are undergoing a ‘browning’ effect yet a comprehensive method for understanding South Asian peoples and their cultures have been isolated to terrorist ‘breeders’, the model minority or as products primed for consumption. This thesis discusses the history of popular Hindi popular cinema, its changing methods of songs and dance and includes options of pedagogical applications within secondary level classrooms. In short, this thesis is an effort to highlight the similarities present amongst the differences that are consciously and unconsciously created or implicitly believed by the general population when attempting to decipher the many different components that exist across South Asian cultures, ethnicities, traditions, histories and identities. iii Dedication For my loving parents, Prakash and Bharti Nayee. -

INTRODUCTION HISTORY Yves Thoraval in his book “The Cinemas of India” has given an insight of the emergence and journey of the Indian cinema and the changing trends that has taken place since its inception in 1869 to the turn of the 20th century. A comprehensive overview of the Indian cinema starting with the Pre-historic Era showcasing the emergence of the cinemas in India with the introduction of the concept of moving pictures (First reel ever shot of a real film produced by the Lumiere operator Maurice Sestier in Bombay on 7thJuly 1896).Then came the era where different genres were discovered, Silent movies were made and shown with live orchestras to the beginning of the Golden Age with the introduction of the ‘Talkies’, to the era of New Indian Cinema i.e. the rise of ‘Auteur’ Cinema and finally an overview of the Regional cinemas. Overall a compact view of the emerging trends and the reasons behind the existence of Indian Cinema. Emergence of Punjabi Culture in Bollywood As the Indian state of ‘Punjab’ faced and struggled with the complex social and economic issues, at the same time a large diaspora was settling all over the globe. Punjabi poets and storytellers of the ancient India seemed to be disappearing as the decreasing water levels in the ‘land of the five rivers’. But, as said, Punjabis are nothing if they are not highly skilled at handling the changes.
