Beyond Dichotomies: Representing and Rewriting Prisoner Functionaries in Holocaust Historiography Allison Ann Rodriguez A thesis submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirem ents for the degree of Master in the Department of History. Chapel Hill 2007 Approved by: Christopher Browning Karen Hagemann Konrad Jarausch Abstract Allison Ann Rodriguez: Beyond Dichot omies: Representing and Rewriting Prisoner Functionaries in Holocaust Historiography (Under the Direction of Christopher Browning) This paper focuses on the representation of prisoner functionaries in the traditional historiography. Starting with Eugen K ogon, it traces the development of the “good political” versus “bad criminal.” Using prisoner and prisoner functionary testimonies, it demonstrates that this current representation is too simplistic and must be re -evaluated. Prisoner functionaries were b oth prisoners and functionaries , and wore a Janus face at all times. This meant they hurt some as they saved others - all within the confines of their limited power. The paper ends with Primo Levi’s The Gray Zone and a call for the understanding to be app lied to future works on prisoner functionaries. II Table of Contents Chapter I. Introduction. 1 II. Dissertation Advisor: Professor Carol J. Oja Micah Wittmer -- Performing Negro Folk Culture, Performing America: Hall Johnson’s Choral and Dramatic Works (1925-1939) Abstract This dissertation explores the portrayal of Negro folk culture in concert performances of the Hall Johnson Choir and in Hall Johnson’s popular music drama, Run, Little Chillun. I contribute to existing scholarship on Negro spirituals by tracing the performances of these songs by the original Fisk Jubilee singers in 1867 to the Hall Johnson Choir’s performances in the 1920s-1930s, with a specific focus on the portrayal of Negro folk culture.

  • A Look Back at a Year for the Ages!
A LOOK BACK AT A YEAR FOR THE AGES! winter 2016 • Volume 25 • Number 4 I recently met some seasoned travelers who treat Walt Disney World Resorts as second homes, returning year after year and passing down their vacation traditions from generation to generation. They receive world-class service from dedicated Cast Members despite no cash changing hands at the end of their stay, and while they’re here, they make a lot of babies. Wait, you thought I was talking about Members? Sorry, I should’ve clarified. I’m talking about birds – purple martins, to be specific. Each year, these agile aerial acrobats fly more than 3,000 miles from the Brazilian Amazon to Walt Disney World Resort, where they settle into specially created accommodations perched on pedestals before finding mates and…well…you know the rest. You can learn more about these curious creatures through the latest installment of our “Quiz Ed” feature on pages 7-8. I mention the birds here because, like many stories in the pages ahead, theirs is as much about where they’re going as where they’ve been. Our community hasn’t just celebrated the past 25 years in 2016; we’ve celebrated 25 years and beyond. So where does Membership Magic go in that great “beyond?” For starters, it sees some of the most popular elements of our 25th anniversary celebration continue in the New Year (pages 3-4), it sees Members sail the Rhine in distinctive fashion (pages 5-6) and it sees one of the most beloved resorts in our neighborhood blaze new trails through the wilderness (page 9).

Beebee Professor of Comparative Literature and German Sophia A. McClennen Associate Professor of Comparative Literature, Spanish, and Women’s Studies Anne C. Rose Professor of History, Religious Studies, and Jewish Studies Caroline D. Eckhardt Professor of Comparative Literature and English Head of the Department of Comparative Literature *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School iii Abstract This study addresses the role of typology in twentieth-century works of literature and film from the Americas, in Spanish, English, French, and Portuguese, that deal with the meaning of America and of American history. Existing scholarship has focused on typological thought in colonial Latin America and Puritan New England, but rarely on other periods. This project, however, explores religious and secular concepts of America by examining how twentieth- century works employ imagery, structures, and themes that can be read as typological. The works analyzed in this study have been selected based on their contributions to the larger conversation about the typologically derived concept of the Americas as a providential New World. Many of the works foreground typological representations of a new covenant between God and America; some employ types in hybridized forms that can be read through the lens of typology as tools to resist oppression.

THE WHITE ALBUM The White Album 1 WE TELL OURSELVES stories in order to live. The princess is caged in the consulate. The man with the candy will lead the children into the sea. The naked woman on the ledge outside the window on the sixteenth floor is a victim of accidie, or the naked woman is an exhibitionist, and it would be “interesting” to know which. We tell ourselves that it makes some difference whether the naked woman is about to commit a mortal sin or is about to register a political protest or is about to be, the Aristophanic view, snatched back to the human condition by the fireman in priest’s clothing just visible in the window behind her, the one smiling at the tele-photo lens. We look for the sermon in the suicide, for the social or moral lesson in the murder of five. We interpret what we see, select the most workable of the multiple choices. We live entirely, especially if we are writers, by the imposition of a narrative line upon disparate images, by the “ideas” with which we have learned to freeze the shifting phantasmagoria which is our actual experience.
