IN MEMORY OF AMANDA NTULI (15/06/1998 – 07/02/2018)

For Amanda,

Amanda Ntuli arrived in Stellenbosch in 2017 after matriculating from St Mary’s Kloof in Durban. Where she came from was evident in her vocabulary strictly consisting of “bru”, a popular Durban slang word which circulated her res, Huis Neethling, soon after her arrival.

Amanda was equally known to be a defender’s nightmare playing as a striker with dangerous hands and a ruthless tomahawk shot. She represented the Victorian Ladies side and the U/21 Western Province Peninsula team that competed for gold in the IPT in 2017. One could never forget her assist against Northerns in the pool stages to secure points for her team to have a chance to be in the semi- finals.

Amongst her teammates, we knew her to always be ready for a solid laugh and a good groove, but she had to prepare mentally a day in advance for a 1km time trial also not afraid to let us know and show how she felt about that. She really made us laugh. There was something different about her mindset for the upcoming 2018 season. It was as if she was prepared to take on the challenges and improve her game to a level where her presence could not be ignored.

Amongst her friends, we knew her to always be ready to witness anything spicy happening from the res window, how she loved to watch reality series and how incredibly valuable sleep was to her. Importantly, we will always remember her ability to change the atmosphere in a room with her contagious laugh and smile. Amanda would always tell it like it is, her transparency and honesty was an admirable and rare trait she held. She was confident and always taught us to enjoy the good things in life, to not always take everything so seriously.

Thank you to Amanda’s family for shaping the young woman and friend we all knew. We knew well that her relationship with her brothers, Sigz and Bili, were strong especially with her mother, Carol. In the time that the heavens gained a beautiful angel, we were exposed to a sudden human experience that not even words could articulate how we had felt. Yet it was evident in the endless tears and the aching feeling we all felt in our hearts. It brings us peace to know that your last few moments were spent playing the game you loved, doing what you do best on attack.

The Maties Hockey club and the Stellenbosch University community will never forget how you made them feel and the unforgettable moments and memories shared. Amanda, you are missed and thank you for being you. – Sandisiwe Tabata & Aimee Pousson

HOCKEY ANNUAL REPORT 2018

The Maties Hockey club had once again a successful year. The Club resurfaced both astro’s and both of them are FIH standard. It was also the first year that the club appointed two full time head coaches, Ashlin Freddy on the Men’s side and Satchi Reddy on the Ladies side. The men defended their 2017 title and the Ladies came 3rd in the LGC league.

Due to the water crisis the Western Cape was faced with, we had to cancel our High School Hockey Camp that normally takes place in April. We did however still host our very first ever u/13 Camp. The second one will take place in March 2019.

Amaarah Hendricks was crowned the Maties Sports Women of the year in 2018. We are very proud of her achievements.

Keenan Horne was selected for the SA men’s side and will take part in the World Cup that starts on the 28th of November. He also received the Rector's Award for Excellente Achievement in Sport. The Club produced 60 players who took part in their respective WP teams.

Like last year we have the Premier Hockey League (PHL). PHL is a tournament where the top players in the country gets selected for various franchises. We have 23 players from Maties representing in 9 teams of the total 12.

Maties Hockey Club had the opportunity to host the final of the Men’s Varsity Cup Tournament. There was a massive crowd here at the astro to support our boys. Unfortunatelty after giving it there all, we lost in the final. We are still very proud of a second place!

PRE – VARSITY CUP PREPARATION

Preparation for Varsity Hockey was really comprimised due to the delay with the Astro turf at Stellenbosch. The squad only had 6 weeks of hockey training to prepare for a tough Varsity Hockey campaign. We had 4 Western Province league games to help us prepare before we departed fort he first weekend.

3. TRANSPORT

The team flew on Mango airline to the various desinations which was organised by Varsity Hockey.

4. ACCOMODATION

The team started in the Garden Court in the various cities. The accomodation was of a very good quality and the players were very happy.

All meals, including top up meals, were in the hotel and supplied / organised by Varsity Hockey.

24 PRE-USSA VOORBEREIDING

Die pre-USSA oefeninge was goed beplan en het goed verloop. Beide spanne het ’n lang, maar deeglike program gevolg. Die kampe het plaasgevind vanaf 24-29 Junie.

1. VERVOER

Beide spanne het gevlieg na Johannesburg. Hier het elke span gebruik gemaak van twee bussies. Hierdie voertuie was gehuur deur die Universiteit van Stellenbosch by die Bidvest voertuigmaatskappy. Spanne het toe vertrek na Bloemfontein.

2. VERBLYF

Beide spanne het voor die toernooi by die van Heerdens se plaas gewoon vir ’n spanbou sessie. Die dames het gedurende die toernooi by Southern Sun Hotel gebly. 2min van die speelvelde af. Mans het tuis gegaan by Gardden Court.

3. ETES

Ontbyt het spanne by hulle akkomodasie gekry. ’n Spysenieringsmaatskappy het middag- en aandete voorsien vir spelers.

4. FINANSIES

Die US Hokkieklub het ±R200 000.00 tot die span en -bestuur se onkostes bygedra. Matie Sport (HP) het R55 000.00 en studente R105 000.00. Die totale onkoste vir die toernooi het R397 000.00 beloop.

MATIES HOCKEY CAMP 2018

During the 2018 season we had a rough start to our year, this impacted our hockey camp significantly. Our astro turfs had a major delay, so we did not know if we would actually have turfs available for the camp, with that the Western Cape had a drought where we where on Level 5 water restrictions. Other camps in Cape Town got cancelled due to the numbers of attendees. With this, teams did not want to commit to the camp as they where scared that the camp will get cancelled and they then need to plan another tour. We made the decision early Febraury that we will cancel our camp due to the factors. We will host again in 2019.

MATIES HOCKEY ACADEMY 2018

The academy ran a SAHA Level 0 & 1 coach accreditation courses in the beginning of the season. With an expert coach and outstanding facilities we are fortunate here at Maties. I would like to thank Ian Naude for doing a great job presenting the coaching courses.

The Maties Hockey Club hosted 3 Junior 6-a-Side tournaments this year. One in January, one in August and the last one was in October. Juniors make up their own teams and come down to the turf to battle it out amongst each other. This is normally a great hit. There is always more than 20 teams that supports this fun tournament.

In March this year we hosted our first ever u/13 Tournament. It was a huge success with over 80 kids here to improve their skills and u/13 teams who played matches against one another. The kids enjoyed a fun Zumba class on the astro, there was a jumping castle for those who still had energy and Mary braaied hotdogs for the parents who came to support their children.

In October this year the Club hosted a 5-a-Side tournament for all students who was interested. The Club also bought the boards and this event will be held from now on annually for everyone to enjoy.

The Development program continued this year. The four schools that formed part of this program is: Ikaya Primary, Weber Gedenk Primary, Idas Valley Primary and Cloetesville. The kids came to the Maties astro once a week for 2 hours. They also received a sandwich and a fruit everytime.

I would like to thank all the coaches and students for the effort they put into making this year a success. I am looking forward to 2019.

KOSHUISHOKKIE 2018

Inleiding Die 2018 Koshuishokkie seisoen het stadig begin. Met beide speelbane wat eers April beskikbaar was en Steinhoff borgskap wat nie meer beskikbaar was nie kon ons nie somerliga of enige van die twee toernooie gespeel het nie.

Winterliga Die formaat van hierdie jaar se liga het bestaan uit 2 ligas, vir beide mans en vroue. Die verteenwoordigers het gevoel dat die vlak tussen superliga en uitdaagliga nie baie verskil nie. Dus, het ons 1 liga gehad met 16 spanne wat op die astro gespeel het en die gewone L/M2 liga wat op gras gespeel het. Die 2 ligas van beide die mans en vroue, het n rondomtalie rondte gespeel, waarna hierdie ligas in die top 4 en onderste 4 verdeel het. Binne hierdie verdeling, het die spanne dan in elke liga semi finale gespeel om te sien wie dan in die finaal speel om sodoende die finale posisies van die spanne in elke liga te bepaal.

Die skeidsregter probleem was beter hierdie jaar. Waar ons een liga skeidsregter saam ‘n beurs houers geplaas het. Sou die student nie opdaag nie, was daar nog ‘n skeidsregter om die wedstryd te laat begin.

5-A-Side Toernooi Die somerliga in 2019 sal vervang word met hierdie formaat.

29 Finansies Die klub word hoofsaaklik gefinansier deur Affiliasie en Registrasiefooie. Hierdie jaar was die fooie vir winterliga terug na die ‘normale’ bedrag, met die gevolg het koshuis hokkie finansieël sterk geeindig.

Baie dankie aan die verteenwoordigers wat seker gemaak het dat die vorms ingevul word en ingegee word. Sonder dit sal die koshuishokkie nie kan funksioneer nie.

Baie dankie ook vir die spanne en verteenwoordigers wat die reëls so mooi nakom en dinge reg doen, dit word weerspieël in die boetes.

Samevatting 2018 was ‘n moeilike jaar vir koshuis hokkie, maar is baie opgewonde vir die 2019 seisoen. Nuwe toernooie, astro beskikbaar van die begin en ‘n nuwe vol jaar van hokkie. Dankie vir die spelers wat elke wedstryd in goeie gees gespeel het, sonder julle en julle liefde vir die sport is die klub niks. Ons hoop ons kan jaarliks groei en dat volgende jaar selfs n beter jaar sal wees en dat die veranderinge wat saam met die jaar kom, tot beter wedstryde sal lei.
