HOCKEY ANNUAL REPORT 2017
The Steinhoff Maties Hockey club had a very successful year. The success of the revamped High Performance Program was reflected in the club results, not only with regards to team performances but also individual achievements. Both the men and women’s teams defended their 2016 titles with great success and won the Western Province Grand Challenge League for another consecutive year. 26 Players represented South Africa in their respective national teams (Senior & u/21 squads).
During January to March we had the privilege to be the training base for some international teams. Netherlands Men, England Ladies, Belgium Ladies & Deutschland ladies had training sessions at our astro complex. It was really interesting to see different coaching & player styles from all over the world in our own backyard. We also hosted matches between the teams. Next year we will not be hosting any teams due to the Western Cape water restrictions.
Steinhoff as a sponsor enjoyed maximum benefit from their investment, with the club’s ever growing and extremely popular Koshuis section. The Koshuis section included the highly competitive Summer League to start the season. 46 teams competed for the two titles. Winter league, had 48 teams participating in 3 men and 3 women’s leagues. Huis ten Bosch triumphed this year as they took the women’s Super League title and Majuba was the men’s Super League Champions.
The 35th Maties Hockey Camp hosted 17 teams from all over South Africa. 40 club members assisted with coaching, umpiring and administration of the camp. The camp was a great success, and our thanks are extended to all who assisted with the project. We do however look forward to next year’s camp as we want to make it the biggest one yet.
In the WPHU league we had playoffs for both the Grand Challenge & Reserve Challenge leagues. This meant that our teams who made the top of their pools had to work even harder to get that final victory. The teams coped well with the new challenge, with 8 of our 10 teams ending in the top five of their respective leagues. The success of the first two men and women’s teams is mainly attributed to the High Performance Program. The men and women’s 1st teams took Grand Challenge League honours, the Women’s & Men’s 1st XI came 5th at the USSA competition. Vics women ended 4th in the Women’s GC league and the Vics men ended their GC status with at 6th position. Both teams ending one spot higher than 2016.
10 Players represented SA on international level in 2017 & 23 players represented WP at senior IPT. We had the annual Western Province u21 IPT this year, at Potchefstroom, where we had an astounding 40 players representing at the u/21 IPT.
Like last year we have the Premier Hockey League (PHL). PHL is a tournament where the top players in the country gets selected for various franchises. We have 23 players from Maties representing in 9 teams of the total 12.
Maties Hockey Club had the opportunity to host 1 of the 3 weekends of the Ladies Varsity Cup Tournament. The crowd pulled in for all the Maties games, was a great weekend of good hockey! The Maties ladies was defenilty one of the favourites to win the title but unfortunately they lost in the final.

The Committee Effective running of the club is dependent on student involvement; this group of people were always on hand to assist. The guidance of the club captains who lead from the front ensured a productive and efficient year for Maties Hockey.

2017 has come and gone and it has yet again been another phenomenal year for the Steinhoff Maties Hockey Club. The Maties Hockey Club is climbing from strength to strength and it showed off in what was a very memorable 2017.
As the curtain closes on an enjoyable season on and off the pitch, we would like to take a moment to reflect on this season’s achievements.
Hosted the 35th Maties Hockey Camp The Maties ladies making the finals of the Varsity Cup Both First Teams winning their respective GC title, and the men won the WPGC knockout cup Men and Women selected to represent their respective senior SA teams 2 Women selected to represent the SA Senior Indoor team A large number of representatives at senior IPT & u/21 IPT. With the WP u/21 men winning the IPT. 23 players participating in the PHL
After a most enjoyable season our Maties Club Captains would like to take a moment to reflect on the season past and thank all those involved. The Hockey Club would not be where it is today without the hours of effort and hardwork from the Hockey Office. Thank you for your guidance and support.
It goes without saying all of the hard work on the pitch could not have been achieved without the hard work behind the scenes and the fervent support from the side-lines. A huge thank you goes out to all those in the extended Maties community who have continued to encourage and motivate. We appreciate the ever-growing support and unity that the community provides, it does not go unseen.
For a well-established institution like this it is every hockey player to fulfill the requirements that is expected from them whether it's on an individual or collective basis. Maties players go above and beyond as soon as they set foot on the field and therefore we value everyone that is associated with this club. Each and every member has played an integral part in contributing to the success of 2017.
To the "Maties Veterans" that are moving on to new adventures, we cannot thank you enough for the hours of energy you have put into our club towards making it an even better environment for the rest who are staying behind. Die pre-USSA oefeninge was goed beplan en het goed verloop. Die voorbereiding het op Woensdag die 22ste Junie begin en het die naweek voor die toernooi geeÏndig.
3. VERVOER
Beide spanne het elk gebruik gemaak van twee Bussies en een motor gedurende die toernooi. Hierdie voertuie was gehuur deur die Universiteit van Stellenbosch by die Bidvest voertuigmaatskappy. Die voertuie was in goeie kondisie en voldoende.

4. VERBLYF
Die dames en mand het tuis gegaan te Garsen Place gastehuis in Norwood. Die akkommodasie by die gastehuis was van baie goeie gehalte en baie gerieflik. Dit was ongeveer 10-15minute van die speelvelde af.
5. ETES
Al drie maaltye was verskaf deur beide die gastehuise. Die daaglikse begroting was voldoende en die reëlings vir die maaltye het meestal vlot verloop.
6. FINANSIES
Die US Hokkieklub het R250 000.00 tot die span en -bestuur se onkostes bygedra. Matie Sport (HP) het R55 650.00 en die totale onkoste vir die toernooi het R 410 000 beloop.

MATIES HOCKEY CAMP 2017
The 2017 camp was our 35th annual hockey camp and we saw some great changes coming to an awesome camp. We worked with Sportsways for the first time and it went really well. Sportsways has a lot of success with their programs they run and it was nothing different at our camp. Sportsways was in charge of the whole program, with our staff coaching these sessions.
We had morning skills sessions, afternoon session (Monday) with matches after these sessions. We introduced Zumba classes where the kids had a lot of fun. Our sessions included teambuilding, fun fitness & vision training.
GOALKEEPERS Rob McKinley headed up the goalkeeper camp and was very successful incorporating a vision session for the goalkeepers which was conducted by Grant Van Velden and his assistants which the participants thoroughly enjoyed. This was a highly successful program, which ensured the growth and development of the goalkeepers attending the camp.
UMPIRE COURSE Vossie Dirkse van Schalkwyk presented an umpire course for our attendees and graded them during the matches at the club. We are looking to increase this number of participants for next year. All attendees received their SAHA official grades after the week.
TOURNAMENT MATCHES The tournament was held each afternoon and evenings, and run on a round robin basis, ending with a winner in each section.
GENERAL My thanks are extended to Devin Stanton, Bryce West, Vossie Dirkse van Schalkwyk & Rob McKinley who helped with the design and management of the respective programs during the week.

MATIES HOCKEY ACADEMY 2017
The Maties Hockey Club tries to give the community everything they need to enjoy the fun of hockey! We worked through WPHU to present the SAHA coaching & umpire courses.
Umpire Courses are still popular but we saw a dip in the attendance of the umpire courses/grading this year. This might be due to the fact that more people are hosting umpire talks, and gradings are valid for three years. As we had a lot of umpires attending our grading in previous years our attendance was smaller this year. I would like to thank Vossie van Schalkwyk & Lee-ann Whitehead for presenting umpire talks & assiting with grading.
The academy ran a SAHA Level 0 & 1 coach accreditation courses in the beginning of the season. With an expert coach and outstanding facilities we are fortunate here at Maties. I would like to thank Ian Naude for doing a great job presenting the coaching courses.

The weekly Junior Maties training sessions throughout the first, second and third term was well supported. With growing numbers each term.
29 April we had our first two-day holiday clinic where we had 57 players attanedin the camp. This camp consisted of fun fitness, skills, mini games & vision training. In the June holiday we had the same holiday clinic happening where we had 51 players attending. The first day we had lovely rain pouring down but that did not slow down anyone as all the kids loved training in the rain.
After the September Holiday we held an indoor post-season tournament for our club members. We had 20 teams participating in this league. Special thanks to Reggie for arranging the Stellenbosch indoor Sport hall.
30 In October we have our annually junior 6-a-side where we had 42 teams participating in u/13, u/11 & u/9 leagues. I would like to thank Bloemhof & Rhenish the availability of their astros (as ours was busy being resurfaced).
This year WPHU started the first u/13 Club league. We had a boys and girls team participating in the league. This is a great initiative from WPHU and we look forward to improving the team. The teams was selected on a “who is free this weekend base” from next year we would like to establish a proper u/13 team, with a coach & training sessions.
We started a Development program for the primary schools in Stellenbosch, every Wednesday they came down to the astro for a two hour session, coached by our Maties players. Idas Valley, Jamestown, Kayamandi & Cloetesville primary.

KOSHUISHOKKIE 2017
Inleiding Die 2017 Steinhoff Koshuishokkie seisoen was, nes vorige jare, ‘n uiters suksesvolle een. Ek wil graag vir Scharlize Crafford bedank vir haar toewyding en harde werk dwarsdeur die seisoen. Baie dankie ook aan Maties Hokkieklub dat al die Superliga en Uitdaagliga wedstryde op die onderskeie Astro bane kon plaasvind.
‘n Groot dankie aan Steinhoff vir die borgskap van die Maties Hokkieklub, wat ook deur filter na die Koshuishokkie. Hierdie jaar het elke deelnemende koshuisspan ‘n unieke kleur hempie van Steinhoff ontvang wat nie net vir die Somerliga nie, maar ook vir die Winterliga gebruik kon word. Daar was ook die opsie van ‘n winterliga hemp, indien spelers belangstel.
Toernooie Die 2017 seisoen het afgeskop met die jaarlikse toernooie op 2 opeenvolgende Saterdae in die eerste kwartaal. Die toernooie was die Eerstejaarstoernooi en die Interkoshuistoernooi.
Dankie aan die Maties hokkie klub komiteelede wat gehelp het met die organisasie van die toernooie asook aan al die skeidsregters wat die wedstryde geblaas het.
Die toernooie was ‘n positiewe afskop vir die seisoen. Dit het vir spanne die geleentheid geskep om mekaar te leer ken en om bekend te raak met die Koshuishokkie kultuur. Hierdie toernooie help kweek die goeie gees van die koshuisliga.
Eendrag wat die mans Interkoshuistoernooi gewen het. Hulle het ook die toernooi in 2016 gewen.

Uitslae van die onderskeie toernooie: Toernooi Vroue Mans Eerstejaarstoernooi Irene Dagbreek Interkoshuistoernooi Medies Eendrag
Somerliga Somerliga is elke jaar n groot toernooi met sterk kompetisie en wedstryde van goeie gehalte wat saans onder die spreiligte op die astro plaasvind. Hierdie jaar was daar 25 Vroue- en 21 Mansspanne van die US se koshuise.
Klubspelers mag ook in hierdie toernooi speel vir hulle onderskeie koshuise. Dit sorg natuurlik vir uitstaaande gehalte hokkie en verskaf ook net verdere rede vir die koshuise om hul onderskeie koshuise te ondersteun en geesdriftige toeskouers te verseker.
Die finale is weereens in ‘n goeie feestelike atmosfeer gespeel. Hierdie jaar was die vroue finaal tussen Huis Ten Bosch en Medies, terwyl die mans finaal uitgeveg was tussen Eendrag en Libertas.

Winterliga Die formaat van hierdie jaar se liga het bestaan uit 3 ligas, vir beide mans en vroue. LSL, LCL, L2, MSL, MCL en M2. Beide die Super Ligas en die Uitdaag Ligas het op die astro-bane plaasgevind. Die Super- en Uitdaag ligas het elk 8 spanne bevat. Met die L2 7 spanne en M2 het 9 spanne. Die drie ligas van beide die mans en vroue, het n rondomtalie rondte gespeel, waarna hierdie ligas in die top 4 en onderste 4 verdeel het. Binne hierdie verdeling, het die spanne dan in elke liga semi finale gespeel om te sien wie dan in die finaal speel om sodoende die finale posisies van die spanne in elke liga te bepaal.
Die skeidsregters was ‘n probleem hierdie jaar, met van die studente wat nie opgedaag het vir hulle wedstryde nie. Ons sal verseker kyk na ‘n beter oplossing vir volgende jaar. Die onderste ligas se verteenwoordigers moes self sorg vir n skeidsregter vir hulle wedstryde. Hierdie wedstryde het op die grasvelde by Welgevallen plaasgevind. Die onderskeie ligas het gesorg vir spannende en baie vermaaklike wedstryde.
Uitslae: Hierdie jaar se aantal spanne wat deelgeneem het was meer as in 2016. Mans het 25 en vroue het 23 spanne gehad wat in die onderskeie ligas deelgeneem het.
Die uitslae vir die onderskeie ligas was dan ook as volg:

5-A-Side Toernooi In 2017 het ons nie ‘n 5-a-side toernooi aangebied nie, die klub se astro’s was vervang en ons het ook ‘n binneshuis liga gereel vir die eerste keer. Die koshuise het nie so baie spanne ingeskryf vir die toernooi nie en het meeste van die spanne bestaan uit klub lede, maar ons sal kyk om volgende jaar die ligas appart te hou sodat ons meer koshuis spanne kan betrek.
Die klub wil ook kyk om 5-a-side borde aan te skaf of ekstra velde te bou, indien dit in 2018 al beskikbaar is sal ons defnitief hierdie liga weer aanbied.
Skeidregters Soos verlede jaar voorgestel is, is ‘n nuwe inisiatief begin wat as die Groep 20 bekend gestaan het. (meer besonderhede onder Instituut verslag) Die skeidsregters wat aan die Groep 20 inisiatief behoort het, het die wedstryde van die Somer- en Winterliga behartig. Hierdie inisiatief het gekom weens die onbetroubaarheid van die klubspelers. Die ideaal sal wees dat elke koshuis n skeidsregter sal voorstel vir die groep en die persoon sal die nodige opleiding onvang en sal dan ingedeel word om wedstryde te blaas deur die seisoen. Die inisiatief was grootendeels suksesvol, ons hoop egter om volgende jaar meer skeidsregters in hierdie groep te he.
Die wedstryde in die Uitdaagligas is deur klubspelers waarngeneem, en ongelukkig is daar weer bevind dat die klubspelers nie altyd opdaag vir hulle skeidsregters diens nie. Vir die klubspelers wat wel opgedaag het, wil ons baie dankie voor se, dit word regtig opreg waardeer.
Ek wil net weer van nie geleentheid gebruik maak om vir die Maties Hokkie klub dankie te se vir als waarmee hull eons gehelp en aangebied het.
Finansies Die klub word hoofsaaklik gefinansier deur Affiliasie en Registrasiefooie. Met die registrasie gelde wat hierdie jaar verminder was, moes daar ‘n paar veranderinge plaasgevind het om die te kort te kan bestuur.
Baie dankie aan die verteenwoordigers wat seker gemaak het dat die vorms ingevul word en ingegee word. Sonder dit sal die koshuishokkie nie kan funksioneer nie.
Boetes maak ook ‘n deel uit van die inkomste. Dit het wel onder ons aandag gekom dat hierdie sisteem nie werk nie en ons volgende jaar die boetes sal verwyder.
Baie dankie ook vir die spanne en verteenwoordigers wat die reëls so mooi nakom en dinge reg doen, dit word weerspieël in die boetes.
Samevatting 2017 was ‘n baie suksesvolle jaar vir Koshuishokkie. Baie dankie aan Scharlize, elke komiteelid en ook elke koshuisverteenwoordiger. Julle bygedra het gelei tot nog ‘n gesonde jaar van Koshuishokkie. Dankie ook vir die spelers wat elke wedstryd in goeie gees gespeel het, sonder julle en julle liefde vir die sport is die klub niks. Ons hoop ons kan jaarliks groei en dat volgende jaar selfs n beter jaar sal wees en dat die veranderinge wat saam met die jaar kom, tot beter wedstryde sal lei.
