Given the nature of the landscape through which National Trails pass, an entirely level, firm network of paths will not be appropriate or reasonable but the user should expect to find: A Alignment 1 A continuous linear route (except where a ferry is required to cross a river or estuary); Measure 1 The percentage of each Trail that is 2 A route on legally defined public rights of way; legally defined. 3 A route which is aligned to provide the user with the best views of Measure 2 the surrounding scenery and access to notable viewpoints and The percentage of each Trail in the places of interest. ‘best’ position. This receives regular use by horse-riders, so it appears to be most appropriate to record its status as public bridleway. The way is already signed as the Cleveland Way, so the only works proposed would be the addition of a blue public bridleway waymark at the junction with Low Field Lane at either end. Katie Morgan, who lives in Kilburn, tells me that she has always ridden the route. I get the impression that historically most people rode the route and I wonder if less people are using it now because of pressure from these local residents who doesn't want horses to use it. Physical condition Katie and I went out there yesterday to look at the route. It has been very wet recently and so we were seeing it at probably it's worst. Our comments are as follows: 1. there is a wet section at SE 5334 8455 (about 50 m east of point A on your map) which I assume is either a spring or field drain. I think this would be relatively easy to resolve and divert the water off the path; it might be as simple as a blocked drain. However even if it was not possible to divert this there is stone underneath and so it is quite usable. I will attach a photo in a separate email. 2. there is a slightly soft section a few metres further on, which perhaps some stone could be added to strengthen. 3. the section through the woods (B to C on your map) is stone and about 3 metres width. This could be widened and opened up by cutting back vegetation.
