Integral to the period which spawned these images are the influential newspapers and the journalists who wrote for them. This study will, I sincerely hope, shed new light on that fascinating period by focusing on the contribution of the Viennese Journalistin of .the.period as represented by two women journalists, Berta Zuckerkandl and Alice Schalek. Thus, a close examination of these participants in the formative phase of twentieth-century cul­ ture will perhaps serve as a partial corrective for the traditional conception of the woman's passive role in Viennese intellectual life. My initial interest in the period was stimulated by research for my Master's thesis, "Arthur Schnitzler and -the Decline of Austrian Liberalism,ff and heightened by reading William Johnston's brilliant volume on intellectual and social history, The Austrian Mind. To an extent I have followed Johnston's suggestion that scholars ffreexamine the entire range of modern Austrian thought." This dissertation begins to explore the active role of women in the "woman-steeped society" of fin de siecle Vienna. In my effort I have been aided by intellectuals in both the United States and Austria. The following pages will examine in detail the work of two individual Journalistinnen of the period and will demonstrate that they had a definite, positive impact on the society which nur­ tured the cultural flowering that accompanied the decline of the Habsburg Empire. First I offer a preliminary survey of the develop­ ment of the press in Vienna after 1848 and of the social and economic circumstances encountered by the first Viennese women journalists. Following this, r investigate the intellectual contributions of the two most noted Journalistinnen of the early twentieth century: Berta Zuckerkandl, the first woman journalist of any importance who contri­ outed regularly to the Viennese press and Alice Schalek, the first woman travel and war correspondent to write for a Viennese newspaper. In. examining the published work of these previously uninvestigated figures of the Viennese press, the historian gains a valuable insight into pre~ and postwar Viennese society and cultural life from the perceptive viewpoint of two observant; and well-placed Journalistinnen. I 2 However, Berta Zuckerkand1 and Alice Scha1ek. utilized their positions not merely to serve as "Spiegel der Zeie' (mirrors of the time), but to crusade actively and effectively for their own particular causes. Both seemed. aware that intellectual life and social mores in their city were in need of criticism, yet a sense of mission and a basic pride in Vienna prevented them from losing all faith in its powers of recuperation. Zuckerkand1 championed the modern in art and theater against the Viennese predilection for an eclectic conventional style. Scha1ek. sought to overcome Viennese indifference to the world outside the Kaiserstadt by drawing attention to two neglected aspects of the outside world: the situation of women and the fate of the com­ mon soldier in World War 1. But their efforts would prove to be only partial remedies to Vienna's malaise, a fact that became clear to these Journa1istinnen only when they were forced to flee into exile in 1938. As apolitical journalists, they campaigned against cultural ignorance and social insularity and gained the attention of their often indifferent fellow· citizens for their .causes through the most influential news medium of the period--the daily press. Newspapers played a major role in conditioning the social and intellectual milieu of the Habsburg capital. No Austrian with intellectual aspirations neglected a daily dissection of the various Viennese gazettes available for leisurely perusal at his favorite coffeehouse. In such a society a skilled professional journalist obviously had great influence. Indeed, wags when referring to Moritz Benedikt, the editor of the Neue Freie Presse from 1880 to 1920~ 3 remarked that next to him Emperor Francis. Jose.ph was the. most impor­ tant personage in Austria.1 This state of affairs had not always prevailed in the Cis1ei.thian part of the Empire. The initial section of my paper describes the rapid growth of the Viennese press after 1848, leading to the development of a number of mass c:trculation dailies and, subsequently, to the entry of the first women into journalism. Eager to increase their circulation, Viennese newspaper owners and editors introduced popular feature articles designed to attract women readers; these articles were often written by women. Women first became prom- went as feuilleton writers, and in fact made their greatest journal­ isti.c impact in this French import, wh.1ch had become the most Viennese of genres. Middle-class women, frequently of Jewish background, were first in. the field, for journal:tsm was one of the few status-carrying occupations available to them. Special problems were encountered by these. women. and, to an extent, overcome by them. Female journalists were. plagued by: the. difficulties of oBtaining regular employment, often the.y used pseudonyms to disguise their sex; the unfair criticism levelled 'by male ed:ttors and colleagues; the frequency with which the .Jolirn.a.1istiJinen were relegated to "female" areas as news of society or of fashion; and the reluctance of editors to promote them. Hapsburg Monarchy (London: Constable and Co., Ltd., 1913), p. 182. 4 In the major portion of my work, I will consider the careers and cultural contributions of the Journalistinnen, Berta Zuckerkandl (1864-19.45) and Alice Scbalek (1874-1956). How Zuckerkandl used her position on the arts staff of the Wiener Allgemeine Zeitung to influ­ ence. the cultural life and opinions of her time is the subject of Chapter ITT. An intellectually prominent hostess of a leading liter­ ary and fine arts salon and a lifelong pacifist, she was also involved in political affairs (chiefly with Franco-Austrian negotiations in World War II. HOwever, journalism was her principalo~cupation; for decades she contributed to art and theater columns where she championed the cause of the then little-known Viennese Art Nouveau group, tfie Sezession, and the innovative drama of Schnitzler and Rofmatmstnal. Her interests extended to the applied arts as well, since she was- a leading supporter of the new architecture of Otto Wagner and Josef Hoffmann. What was the “glue” that held this multiethnic empire together, when its collapse had been predicted since 1848, and which of its elements continued to exist beyond 1918? How was this heritage expressed in the different regions of the new republic? At least six factors can be identified as ingredients of the “glue” that held the monarchy together: first, the Emperor, a figure who symbolized the fusion of the complex linguistic, ethnic and religious components of the Habsburg state; second, the administrative officials, who were loyal to the Emperor and worked in the ubiquitous and even architecturally similar buildings of the Monarchy’s district authorities and train stations; third, the army, whose members promoted the imperial ideals through their long terms of service and acknowledged linguistic diversity.

Latency of visual studies within the Vienna School of Art History? Abstract This article investigates a research method of the so-called Vienna School of Art History, mainly its transformation by Max Dvořák around the First World War. The article suggests the possible influence of Georg Simmel’s philosophy on Dvořák in this time, evident mainly in Dvořák’s interpretation of Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s art, written by Dvořák in 1920 and published posthumously in 1921. This another view on the Vienna School of Art History is then researched in writings on Pieter Bruegel the Elder by Dvořák’s students Hans Sedlmayr and Charles de Tolnay when Tolnay extended Dvořák’s thinking and Sedlmayr challenged its premises – both Tolnay and Sedlmayr thus in the same time interpreted Bruegel’s art differently, even though they were both Dvořák’s students. The article then suggests a possible interpretative relationship of the Vienna School of Art History after its transformation by Max Dvořák with today’s approaches to art (history), mainly with the so-called visual studies.     artificialhorizon.org The distinctiveness of Bohemian baroque: a study in the architecture of Central Europe, c.1680-c.1720 RALPH HARRINGTON Between the late seventeenth century and the first years of the eighteenth the architecture of Bohemia underwent a marked transformation as the Italian influences that had been dominant until around 1690 gave way before Southern German and Austrian influences. In 1680 there were 28 architects of Italian origin working in Prague, compared with seven recorded as coming from northern Europe.1 The rapidity with which German influence displaced Italian can be gauged from the fact that by the later 1690s the proportions were reversed, largely as a result of the great immigration of architects, particularly from southern Germany, which took place from 1690 to 1700. This influx of talent ensured that, despite long-established Italian architectural dominance, the great flowering of the Austrian baroque which took place in the 1680s had rapid repercussions in Bohemia, where its influence interacted with local influences to produce a style of architecture altogether distinct from that prevalent in Austria itself. The first phase of the Austrian baroque had itself been dependent on Italian artists, and a large number of architects, sculptors and decorators originating in Italy made vital contributions to the development of the style known as ‘Imperial Baroque’. This Austrian imperial architectural style, dynamic in its manipulation of volumes and planes, grandiloquent in detail but massively authoritarian in overall character, had reached its fullest expression around 1700, finding its greatest exponents in two Italian-trained native architects, Johann Fischer von Erlach (1656- 1723) and Lucas von Hildebrandt (1688-1745).

    Viennese art, ugliness, and the Vienna school of art history: the vicissitudes of theory and practice Kathryn Simpson Around 1900 in Vienna, the concept of ugliness developed a new significance in both art theory and practice. The theorists of the Vienna school of art history, including Franz Wickhoff, Alois Riegl, and later Otto Benesch and Max Dvoř{k, rejected the scholarly tradition of Germanic contemporaries like renowned art historian Heinrich Wölfflin, who championed classical art as the highest aesthetic good. By contrast the Vienna school art historians opposed absolute aesthetics and its insistence that a specifically classical beauty was the goal of all art.1 At the dawn of the twentieth century, Wickhoff and Riegl both presented radically new theories arguing for a revaluation of aesthetic values, a non-hierarchical relationship between so-called beauty and ugliness, and the importance of developing an art that was appropriate for the age. Ugliness was suddenly spotlighted in Viennese artistic practice as well. Gustav Klimt was the undisputed king of the Viennese art scene; he had inherited the throne from the revered history painter, designer, and decorator Hans Makart, whose sensual, decorative sensibility had defined late-nineteenth-century tastes in Vienna, giving rise to the term Makartstil, or ‘Makart style.’ After three years as the leader of the Vienna Secession movement, Klimt produced a series of works of art which enraged sectors of the intellectual establishment and the general public, who reacted in particular to the purported ugliness of Klimt’s latest visions. Yet shortly thereafter young Viennese artists eager to lead what they called the ‘new art’ movement began to develop deliberate strategies of ugliness to help create and buttress their own antagonistic artistic personae.

It analyzes the narrative of Austrian history presented by the Heldendenkmal, or Heroes’ Monument, which was erected in Vienna in 1934. Further, it argues that Pietas Austriaca was linked in the postwar period to a notion of Heimat (Home, Homeland) and served the needs of Austrian political Catholicism, which was seeking to recruit former National Socialists. This situation has made the search for a single Austro-Hungarian identity so difficult that many historians have declared it impossible. Yet the Dual Monarchy possessed one potentially unifying cultural aspect that has long been critically neglected: the extensive repertoire of marches and patriotic music performed by the military bands of the Imperial and Royal Austro- Hungarian Army. This Militärmusik actively blended idioms representing the various nationalist musics from around the empire in an attempt to reflect and even celebrate its multinational makeup.

    AUVIL, RICHARD D., D.M.A. A Reference for the Art Songs of Dora Pejačević with English Translations of the Song Texts. (2014) Directed by Dr. James Douglass. 99 pp. Dora Pejačević (1885-1923) is recognized as an influential figure in the musical history of her native country, Croatia. In addition to composing a number of works for solo piano, voice, and violin, her compositional output includes, among other works, a piano quartet, a piano quintet, a piano concerto, and a symphony. In recent years, within her native Croatia, a renewed interest has developed in the works of Dora Pejačević. Coupled with this interest is a hope that increased awareness of these compositions might occur beyond the borders of this country. Dora Pejačević wrote thirty-three art songs, with the first composed at the age of fifteen and the last composed within three years of her death. It is this component of her oeuvre that this document addresses in three ways: by providing the first comprehensive collection of translations, both word-for-word and grammatically-fluent, of the complete song texts; by guiding the reader to current literature and research for any given song; and finally, by introducing new research relevant to the songs. Simultaneously, this document increases the accessibility of these songs to English-speaking readers both through the translations of the song texts, and by summarizing and highlighting information found in foreign-language research pertaining to the composer and her songs. In addition, a brief biography of Dora Pejačević is followed by a discussion of tangential themes intended to increase awareness of topics often found in the academic discourse concerning the composer.
