Alone, he meets Countess Larisch and Baroness Vetsera, who introduces her daughter, Mary. Four Hungarian officers PRINCESS STEPHANIE MEAGHAN GRACE HINKIS interupt, pleading their separatist cause. Countess Larisch tries to revive her past HIS WIFE relationship with Rudolf. The Emperor discovers them and orders Rudolf to join his wife. Rudolf first visits his mother, Empress Elizabeth, and attempts to engage her sympathy. EMPEROR FRANZ-JOSEF GARY AVIS At Rudolf’s apartments, Stephanie is prepared for the wedding night. Rudolf forces OF AUSTRIA-HUNGARY himself on her, terrifying her with a revolver. HIS FATHER Act II EMPRESS ELISABETH KRISTEN MCNALLY At a notorious tavern, Bratfisch tries to entertain Stephanie, but she leaves, disgusted. HIS MOTHER Rudolf devotes his attention to his mistress, Mitzi Caspar. His Hungarian friends hand out political pamphlets. They hide during a police raid. Despairing, Rudolf suggests to COUNTESS MARIE LARISCH LAURA MORERA Mitzi they commit suicide together. Prime Minister Taafe comes to remove Rudolf from LADY-IN-WAITING TO ELISABETH, the tavern. As Rudolf leaves, Countess Larisch presents Mary Vetsera. EX-MISTRESS OF RUDOLF Countess Larisch calls on Baroness Vetsera at her house. She tells Mary’s fortune, BARONESS HELENE VETSERA ELIZABETH MCGORIAN assuring her that her romantic dreams will come true. Mary gives her a letter for Rudolf. MARY VETSERA’S MOTHER During Franz Josef’s birthday, Taafe confronts Rudolf with the Hungarian pamphlet. The Empress presents her husband the Emperor with a portrait of his ‘friend’, Katherina BRATFISCH JAMES HAY Schratt, and Rudolf observes an amorous exchange between the Empress and ‘Bay’. RUDOLF’S PRIVATE CAB-DRIVER Countess Larisch teases Rudolf with Mary’s letter. Mary and Rudolf meet in secret at AND ENTERTAINER Rudolf’s apartments for the first time. MITZI CASPAR MAYARA MAGRI Act III A HIGH-CLASS PROSTITUTE, At a shoot in the countryside, Rudolf kills a courtier and almost hits the Emperor. RUDOLF’S REGULAR MISTRESS The Empress discovers Countess Larisch with Rudolf at his apartments and dismisses her, unaware that Mary is waiting outside. Mary joins Rudolf, who asks her to die COLONEL ‘BAY’ MIDDLETON NEHEMIAH KISH with him. ELISABETH’S LOVER Rudolf, drinking with his friends in the hunting lodge at Mayerling, indicates that he is unwell and they leave. Bratfisch arrives with Mary, and attempts to entertain KATHERINA SCHRATT CATHERINE CARBY them. In a passionate frenzy Rudolf makes love to Mary. Calming his nerves with FRANZ JOSEF’S FRIEND morphine, he embraces her then shoots her. Rudolf’s friends rush in and are expelled by Rudolf who, left alone, shoots himself.     Press Information → 2020/21 Season THE VIENNA ① STATE BALLET 2020/21 »Along with my team and my dancers, I intend to work towards developing the Vienna State Ballet into a major hotspot of the art of dance in Austria and Europe forming an ensemble that reflects and inspires the traditions, changes and innovations of the lively metropolis, city of art and music, Vienna.« Martin Schläpfer Martin Schläpfer takes over the direction of the Vienna State Ballet with the 2020 / 21 season. The renowned Swiss choreographer and ballet director has recently led the multi-award-winning Ballett am Rhein Düsseldorf Duisburg to international acclaim. His works fascinate with their intensity, their virtuosity, their deeply moving images and a concise language of movement, which is understood as making music with the body, but always reflects the atmosphere and questions of today’s world. Several performances offer the opportunity to encounter Martin Schläpfer’s art – including two world premieres: Two new pieces for Vienna are being created to Gustav Mahler’s 4th Symphony and Dmitri Shostakovich’s 15th Symphony, which also mark the beginning of the intensive creative dialogue that Martin Schläpfer will be establishing with the artists of his ensemble in the coming years. As director, Martin Schläpfer is a bridge-builder who will naturally continue to cultivate the great ballet traditions, but will also enrich the programme with important contemporary artists and a great variety of choreographic signatures. The masters of American neo-classical ballet George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins will continue to be among the fixed stars of the Vienna repertoire, as will the Dutchman Hans van Manen.
