Annual Report On Gifts And Contributions 2014 - 2015 STATE UNIVERSITY

“I don’t know what the future may hold, but I know who holds the future.” RALPH ABERNATHY

Alfred W. Harris founded present-day Virginia State University in 1882. It was then known as Virginia Normal and College Institute and represented the nation’s first fully state-assisted college or university for blacks. Today, only about one-third of VSU’s operating budget comes from state funding.

A comprehensive university, VSU is one of two land-grant institutions in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Our mission is to promote and sustain academic programs that integrate instruction, research, and extension/public service in a design most responsive to the needs and endeavors of individuals within our scope of influence.

The University educates over 5,600 students who are majoring in one of 34 undergraduate programs leading to a bachelor’s degree and 18 graduate level, master’s and doctoral programs.

Ultimately, the University is dedicated to the promotion of knowledgeable, perceptive, and humane citizens – secure in their self-awareness, equipped for personal fulfillment, sensitive to the needs and aspirations of others, and committed to assuming productive roles in an ever-changing global society.

Through community involvement, a challenging academic program, diverse student organizations and exciting extracurricular activities, Virginia State University is Building a Better World. VIRGINIA STATE UNIVERSITY ANNUAL REPORT ON GIFTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS 2014-2015

MESSAGE FROM THE OFFICE OF INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT

We are pleased to present the 2014-2015 Annual Report on Gifts and Contributions to Virginia State University. This was a challenging, yet special year for all of us, as VSU continues to strive to attract and retain the best and brightest students.

Virginia State University began the 2015 calendar year at a crossroad. The University faced a multimillion dollar financial shortfall; student enrollment was steadily decreasing; and there was increasing discontent among students and alumni alike. However, through conservative budgeting and planning, along with a commitment to operate like the multimillion dollar business that it is, VSU wiped out a $19 million budget shortfall and finished the fiscal year with a $3 million+ surplus. Enrollment for both Spring and Fall semesters exceeded projections, allowing for a more robust student experience. Alumni and student pride was palpable, as indicated by record numbers of proud Trojans returning for Alumni Weekend and Homecoming.

Every generation strives to make things better and provide a more positive experience for those who follow. The scholarships and endowment funds you support are educating today’s students who represent the next generation of professionals whose work will advance the living standards and quality of life for the world.

At Virginia State University we are proud to be the vehicle that will transport our students into the future with confidence, a quality education and a sense of mission as they embark upon their respective careers or engage in graduate studies. We are encouraged and most grateful to have you as a partner on this journey.

Thank you for your continued support of Virginia State University. Hail State! Hail State! Hail, Hail, Hail!

VSU ENDOWMENTS

As of June 30, 2015

Building the University’s endowment remains a top priority of University administration. Endowments at Virginia State University help us aim higher to achieve our educational mission more effectively. VSU receives a dollar-for-dollar match from the Department of Education, Title III Endowment Challenge Program on any new dollars contributed to endowments.

The annual administrative fee, approved by the University Board of Visitors consists of 1% of the total fund balance of locally held accounts, including endowments. The one time set up fee for gifts that establish or add to an endowment is 2.5% for such gifts received in fiscal year 2004 and 1% for such gifts received thereafter and collected at the close of the first twelve months following receipt of the gift. All fees are collected prior to distribution of earnings.

Endowments provide continuous support of Virginia State University, into perpetuity. A minimum of $10,000 is required to establish an endowment at VSU. Words cannot adequately express our gratitude to all donors to VSU Endowments. We are most appreciative of the abundant generosity, forethought, and affection for Virginia State that is clearly demonstrated through perpetual support.

Every effort was made to compile a comprehensive list of all privately established VSU endowments with balances above $10,000. Otherwise, please forgive any unintended omission from this list due to unavoidable human error. Should you have any questions, please contact Bart Blanks, Assistant Director of Development Services, at (804) 524-5559 or [email protected].

Annual Fund gifts provide unrestricted support for the University’s areas of greatest need. A healthy Annual Fund enables VSU to strengthen and support infrastructure and scholarship needs across the University, as well as to enhance research and academic programs and to sustain and grow athletics. The ‘14-’15 numbers included several planned gift payouts and some large corporate gifts as donors came together in a concerted effort to help overcome large individual tuition shortfalls. This overwhelming support continues today as donors remain steadfast in their efforts to assist our students. Despite the wonderful outpouring of generosity, we must also remember that over 90% of our students require some sort of financial assistance. Every student deserves the opportunity to succeed academically, free from the worry of financial restrictions brought on by limited funds. The hopes and dreams of our students are facilitated by your generous gifts to the Tuition Assistance Fund, which provides direct aid that helps students stay in school.

Evening Song By Alston Water Burleigh 1930

Far above the Appomattox, On its lofty hill, Stands the school we love so dearly, And we always will. Through the years may come between us, Still what’ere our fate, We will keep thy song before us, Hail Virginia State.

Keep our aim and purpose steadfast Thru the darkest night, Lead us on to full achievement, By thy guiding light; Then when we fulfill our mission, Be it small or great, We will sing thy praise forever, Hail Virginia State.

Refrain Carry me back to Alma Mater. Life’s sweetest song we will sing to our Mother, Hail to Virginia State, our home forever more.
