Our mission as a college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America—to nur- ture and challenge individuals in their search for truth and meaning as they lead lives of faith, learning and service—reflects this profound influence. One way in which we celebrate and enact our mission is through a tradition of strong relationships with churches. Sincerely, President Leonard formally began as president of the college on August Edward F. Leonard III, Ph.D. 1, 2007, and he was inaugurated as the college’s thirteenth president on President April 12, 2008. He previously served as vice president for advancement at Bethany College Wilmington College in Ohio. In addition to his past experience in higher education and the corporate world, President Leonard has taught business and marketing classes as an adjunct professor at a number of colleges. He and his wife, Sheila, have a son, Quade.     Wrestling with the Mission Mantle: Matthias Wahlstrom, Failed Missionary to the Comanche, and the Relation between the Augustana Synod and the Covenant Church MARIA ERLING he Augustana Synod meeting in June 1879 convened in Chi- cago, Illinois, where lively religious factions contended within Tthe Swedish-American community. Augustana claimed the Lutheran mantle, but retained in many ways the fervency of the Swedish revival. To the pious, however, the mantle of conservative Lutheranism was a heavy burden. Even though Swedish citizens learned the faith through Luther’s catechism and the traditional forms of the Church of Sweden, orthodoxy felt at times like a spiritual strait- jacket. In America, and especially in the booming metropolis of Chicago, Swedish churches courted immigrants who often wanted something new. When Augustana’s ministers and delegates came to Chicago, their college and seminary in Rock Island boasted its ortho- doxy, but the synod also embarked on a missionary initiative to the Comanche. It was a bold gambit to show that from their outpost in Rock Island they could claim both a foothold in the west and a central role in the piously demanding Swedish religious environ- ment.1 Augustana’s first twenty-five years followed an itinerant path, moving its school from Springfield to Paxton, then to Rock Island, and becoming more orthodox, traditional, and formal in teaching and practice. In 1860 professor Esbjörn and most of his students abruptly left Springfield, where a strained partnership with the American Lutheran General Synod had ended in recrimination. Chicago pro- vided a temporary home, while financial pressures pushed them into speculative ventures in land holding and colony building in Paxton, 136 Illinois.

I de mer folkrika städerna kan man ju i princip finna något att se/höra var dag i veckan. Konkurrensen om dess publik blir då naturligtvis även den hårdare, många som vågar (en eloge till er) får också svårare att få det gå ihop ekonomiskt men eldsjälarna verkar aldrig ge sig tack och lov. Det har blivit en hel del konsertrapporter och recensioner 2010 på ArtRock och ett stort tack till er skribenter som gett oss dessa.     Pain Of Salvation – Panther (53:33, 2CD Mediabook, CD, 2LP+CD, Digital, InsideOut Music / Sony Music, 2020) Einmal mehr stehen die Zeichen auf Veränderung, ein Prozess der ja bei Pain Of Salvation nicht ungewöhnlich ist. Mehr Pain (= Schmerz, Mühe) oder mehr Salvation (= Erlösung, Rettung)? Das kommt wie immer darauf an, ob man mit der stellenweise vorhandenen Neuorientierung auf „Panther“ etwas anfangen kann. Bereits in der Vergangenheit sorgten Richtungswechsel, wie zum traditionellen Hard Rock bei „Salt Road“ oder dem überambitionierten Prog-Metal-Konzeptwerk „Be“ nicht immer nur für komplette Zustimmung in der Fangemeinde. Als einigermaßen objektiver Nicht-Fanboy, der dennoch der Band immer eine gewissen Zuneigung entgegenbringt, hat man es da wohl etwas einfacher. War der Vorgänger „In The Passing Light Of Day“ eine deutliche Rückkehr zum Prog Metal, einer Richtung, in der die meisten die schwedische Band um MastermindDaniel Gildenlöw am liebsten sehen, folgt nun mit Breakbeats und elektronischer Klangauffrischung der Schritt in die Moderne, ohne gänzlich auf die progmetallischen Wurzeln zu verzichten. Nicht von ungefähr findet man die programmatische Textzeile „Welcome To The New World“ im Titel ‚Unfuture‘. Bereits der Einstieg mit dem von holpernder Rhythmik dominierten Opener ‚Accelerator‘ landet durch technisch klingende, sehr massive Keyboardsounds und Vocoder-Einsatz im Hier und Jetzt – wie auch bei der Single ‚Restless Boy‘ Vocoder und elektronische Sounds prägende Merkmale sind. Im kompletten Kontrast dazu steht die rein akustische Überleitung ‚Fur‘, während der teils bluesige Hard Rock auf ‚Unfuture‘ oder ‚Species‘ am ehesten an die ‚Road Salt‘-Phase erinnert. Das abschließende 13-minütige ‚Icon‘ folgt mit einer ruhigen Einleitung, bombastisch-metallischer Dramatik und mündet in einem gefühlvollen Gitarrensolo.

This is the result of the Swedish genius for documenting almost every aspect of life from birth to death. They have, in fact, created and retained documents that Americans would never think of looking for, such as certificates of change of employment, of change of address, military records relating whether a soldier's horse was properly equipped, and more common events such as marriage, emigration, and death. When immigrants arrived in the United States and found that they were not bound to the single state religion into which they had been born, the Swedish church split into many denominations that emphasized one or another aspect of religion and culture. Some required children to study the mother tongue in Saturday classes, others did not. Some, more liberal than European Swedish Lutheranism, permitted freedom of religion in the new country and even allowed sects to flourish that had been banned in Sweden.
