IN April, 1848, the author of the present volume left England in company with Mr. A. R. Wallace--"who has since acquired wide fame in connection with the Darwinian theory of Natural Selection"--on page 1 / 626 a joint expedition up the river Amazons, for the purpose of investigating the Natural History of the vast wood-region traversed by that mighty river and its numerous tributaries. Mr. Wallace returned to England after four years' stay, and was, we believe, unlucky enough to lose the greater part of his collections by the shipwreck of the vessel in which he had transmitted them to London. Mr. Bates prolonged his residence in the Amazon valley seven years after Mr. Wallace's departure, and did not revisit his native country again until 1859. Mr. Bates was also more fortunate than his companion in bringing his gathered treasures home to England in safety. So great, indeed, was the mass of specimens accumulated by Mr. Bates during his eleven years' researches, that upon the working out of his collection, which has been accomplished (or is now in course of being accomplished) by different scientific naturalists in this country, it has been ascertained that representatives of no less than 14,712 species are amongst them, of which about 8000 were previously unknown to science. -

It is common to came across our students doubts when doing a text translation, as they are beginners in dealing with word meanings in a second language they can have difficulties to learn. Our main intention in this work is to motivate our student to feel confident when learning word meaning in English. The activities in this unit tried to contribute to with some rendering difficulties related to the Culture because we focus on the folklore of some countries like USA, England, Australia, New Zealand and Brazil. In time we remember that Culture is not or focus of attention because only in this work we do not have time and space to discus a so complex issue properly. Although the translation is an individual activity we can conclude it is related to socio- cultural rules. -

Journal of Academic Perspectives “Sugar and Spice, and Everything Nice”: A Brazilian Reading of Jane Eyre Sandra Sirangelo Maggio 1, Luciane Oliveira Müller 2 and Valter Henrique Fritsch 3 ABSTRACT In 2012 the novel Jane Eyre was studied by a group of undergraduate English Literature students from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, in Brazil. Negotiation was needed on the part of the teachers so that a number of reception issues could be managed and the experiment eventually be deemed successful. To set the tone of this exercise, the group borrowed a metaphor from Umberto Eco, and compared literature to some woodland where every reader can enter, provided they carry a rucksack. The better equipped the rucksack is, the longer the readers can stay in the woods. Therefore, the group determined to learn as much as possible about the historical and cultural aspects of Victorianism, so that they could carry heavier rucksacks and profit as much as possible from their journey, becoming well informed readers, capable of avoiding some of the culture gaps that inevitably occur. The aim of this paper, thus, is to retrace that reading journey, reporting the discoveries made and the hindrances met by the group, while examining the strategies used to move forward. Difficulties ranged from simple lack of current daily life knowledge (What does a horse chestnut tree look like? What does heather look like? What does a manor house look like?) to denser, more abstract matters. The central concern was the intriguing clash between the moralistic and romantic aspects of Victorianism. In what possible ways could the novel solve the unsolvable predicament of the protagonist, who pledges allegiance simultaneously to two irreconcilable masters, morality and passion? To solve this puzzle, the group used the theory of the Orders of the Image, by Gilbert Durand, as an aid. -

Abstract In this dissertation, I argue that Jesuit missionary writings in the Americas demonized and appropriated indigenous sources of medical knowledge, contributing to the exclusion of indigenous voices from the archive of the western history of science and medicine. I take a critical look at the way in which Jesuits implemented a discourse of sorcery as a strategy to delegitimize Amerindian healers and spiritual leaders that stood in opposition to the colonial occupation of present-day Brazil and Mexico. In chapter 1, I illuminate the cognitive operations behind the Jesuit impulse to impose Christianity on native communities through a reading of Jesuit-authored letters from colonial Brazil, including missionary correspondence from José de Anchieta, Fernão Cardim, and António Vieira as well as a set of anonymous letters penned from São Vicente. In these documents we find that— given the swiftness of smallpox outbreaks—encounters among Jesuit missionaries and Amerindians were often structured around an urgent need to care for the sick, making the study of local medicines all the more necessary. In chapter 2, I analyze Portuguese Jesuit Fernão Cardim’s appropriation of indigenous botanical information in his natural history, known today under the title Tratados da Terra e Gente do Brasil [Treatises on the Land and People of Brazil] (1583-1601). -
