Der Tradödie Zweiter Teil ) 5 Zusammenfassung auf Portugiesisch - Resumo em Português Esta dissertação tem como objetivo investigar as relações entre os media – a imprensa, a fotografia, o filme, a Internet - e a literatura, focalizando especificamente as diversas formas que a matéria Fausto assumiu durante os últimos 500 anos e suas inter-relações com as outras áreas sociais. Parte-se da convicção que estes medias exercem um papel central na formação das estruturas sociais e nas suas características, conforme Wilhelm Voßkamp1 os medias são “culturas de comunicação que co-definem a realidade social" (Stanitzek e Voßkamp 2001). A história do Fausto é traçada a partir de sua origem como lenda oral. Convém lembrar que a figura faustiana tem como base o verdadeiro Fausto que viveu aproximadamente de 1480/1 – 1510/1 na Alemanha. Georg ou Johann Faust era tido como um mágico, um astrólogo e um alquimista e suas histórias fantásticas circulavam oralmente até que foram registradas em manuscritos no início do séc. XVI. Enquanto Fausto era vivo já surgiram várias lendas a seu respeito e após sua morte, que se deu numa experiência alquímica, correu a história que ele tinha um pacto com o demônio. Martin Luther, contemporâneo de Fausto, foi o primeiro a associá-lo ao satã (entidade demoníaca da tradição cristã) em sua obra “Conversa de mesa”2 (1593). Assim, o mito que celebra um pacto com o diabo encontra suas raízes na realidade. Após a invenção de Gutenberg, surge em 1587 a primeira obra impressa, o livro popular “Historia von D. Johann Fausten”3, publicado por Johann Spies. Este livro, que foi escrito com intenção de assustar, amedrontar e alertar os leitores contra as tentações do “diabo”, era de fácil leitura e logo cativou um grande público, tornando-se rapidamente conhecido em quase toda a Europa. Um dos motivos da grande popularidade desta obra é que apesar de literária as cenas eram tão bem descritas que era possível projetar mentalmente os quadros de horror e sobrenaturais que ali eram narrados. A descrição da personagem demoníaca desta obra, chamada de Mephistopheles, teve nítida influência das imagens diabólicas projetadas com a laterna mágica e a câmera obscura na idade média. A mesma servia como advertência para aqueles que possuíam curiosidade intelectual e queriam ir além dos limites estabelecidos pelas igrejas católica e protestante. O inglês Christopher Marlowe escreveu em 1587 uma peça teatral “The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus“4, na qual, assim como na “Historia”, Fausto é levado pelo demônio no final da história, pois havia selado um pacto assinado com o próprio sangue. Mephisto serviria ao Fausto durante 24 anos, se o mesmo no fim da vida lhe desse sua alma. A obra de Marlowe influenciou posteriormente as peças teatrais, apresentações, teatro de marionetes e grupos de teatro itinerante na Alemanha. Em aproximadamente 1600, grupos teatrais alemães passaram a exibir a peça Fausto, introduzindo a mesma elementos cômicos, como por exemplo a figura do “Hanswurst”. Fausto tornara-se uma peça dirigida ao povo, com apresentações em feiras populares. Com Gothold Ephraim Lessing inicia-se uma redramatização em um nível mais elevado, seguido pelas diversas versões do Goethe (Urfaust5-1775; Faust, ein Fragment6-1791; Faust. Der Tragödie Erster Teil7-1808 e Faust. Der Tragödie zweiter Teil8-1826). Johann Wolfgang von Goethe assistiu ao teatro de marionetes, peça inspirada no drama de Marlowe e começa a interessar-se e aprofundar-se no tema. Goethe, porém deu ao seu livro um final diferente, nele Fausto é salvo. E é justamente em Goethe, onde Fausto torna-se símbolo do homem moderno, que a obra atinge sua máxima expressão. O Fausto apresentado em teatro de marionetes na época de Goethe e as projeções com a laterna mágica, referentes ao Fausto e ao Mephisto, que influenciaram a própria obra de Goethe, podem ser vistos como precursores do novo meio fílmico. Os primeiros fragmentos na matéria do Fausto, dos quais se têm notícias, foram filmados aproximadamente em 1895 (enfatizando elementos aventureiros, mágicos e cômicos da personagem). Sabe-se que Louis Lumières e George Méliés fizeram inúmeras filmagens com a temática faustiana. Estes filmes fragmentados e de curta duração eram apresentados em feiras, mercados ou espaços alugados para apresentações de filmes, como um espetáculo técnico e pura diversão. Fausto, como obra cinematográfica, vai se desenvolvendo através dos séculos, passando pelas fases inerentes à própria evolução do filme, ou seja, pela câmera obscura, laterna mágica 4 Christopher Marlowe, Die tragische Historie vom Doktor Faust. A temática faustiana foi vastamente utilizada nas mais diversas produções filmicas. Conforme Lange-Fuchs9, foram produzidos filmes sobre Fausto na Alemanha, França Inglaterra, América, Itália e Dinamarca.

The book illustrates sins and values of the fin-de-siècle society and gives the image of Satan in a different from traditional perspective. The main aim of the research is to define moral values and vices of the late Victorian era and their reflection in the characters of Marie Corelli’s novel. Furthermore, the purpose of the study is to analyse the image of Satan/Lucio via his actions and his role in main characters’ life and fate. In addition to that, to compare vices of the 19th century with vices of the contemporary age to identify similarities and differences between views on sins/vices by analysing the image of Satan and his role in characters’ life in the TV series Lucifer (2016-2018: seasons 1-3) against the novel.     SUMMARY Summary of Thesis submitted for Ph.D. degree by Sarah Jane Berry on Seeking God by Strange Ways: Cults and Societies in fin de siècle literature The general consensus regarding the role of Christianity at the fin de siècle is that while it did not cease to exist, technological and scientific advances had eroded the faith of many educated Victorians. Here, the term “seeking” suggests a spiritual journey with the aim of attaining a true understanding of the universe, which in occult circles is called esoteric knowledge or “gnosis”. One of the purposes of this thesis is to demonstrate how “seeking God by strange ways” in fin de siècle literature is a spiritual rite of passage to locate God in man and involves “lifting the veil” between this world and the spiritual realm. The late nineteenth century traveller seeking God enters a “period of margin” or transitional phase between two fixed states. As liminality is characterized by transformation or a process of “becoming”, some liminal beings live outside their normal environment and raise questions concerning their self, the existing social order and “the new hedonism”. The novels and authors featured here have been chosen to illustrate this thesis because they describe alternative religious cults and societies and spiritual rites of passage, while exploring social and cultural transitions. This exploration often brings with it abjection, marginalization and alienation. In addition to raising questions of “gender inversion”, sexual equality with notions of the “equalization of women and men” and “psychic androgyny”, the occult and mystical revival laid great stress on individual evolution and perfection.

    Corelli’s Caliban in a Glass: Realism, Antirealism, and The Sorrows of Satan JILL GALVAN Ohio State University IN 1890, AUTHORS Walter Besant, Eliza Lynn Linton, and Thomas Hardy took part in a New Review symposium on the subject of contem- porary literature entitled “Candour in English Fiction.” The question at hand was just how truthfully fiction could delineate life—especially relations between the sexes—before it ran afoul of the moral expec- tations of its audience. What, in short, were the limits of realism in the contemporary age? As all three contributors agreed, the issue was inextricable from the workings of the literary marketplace. If a story were too racy, it would fail to be picked up by the middle-class outlets, dooming it to commercial failure. In Besant’s phrasing, the bounds of fiction are “assigned by an authority known as Average Opinion,” and “Average Opinion cannot be resisted. The circulating libraries refuse to distribute such books.”1 Hardy’s contribution also stressed a related point: the person considered most vulnerable to candid literature was the female reader, especially the daughter of the family. He deplored that fiction was being written with this reader, her feminine innocence, in mind: “[A]ll fiction should not be shackled by conventions concern- ing budding womanhood.”2 Like the others, Linton wondered about the implications for serious literary art. “Must men go without meat,” she asked, “because the babes must be fed with milk?” Some solution must be found to protect English fiction from such “emasculation,” for pres- ently it was “the weakest of all, the most insincere, the most jejune.… It is wholly wanting in dignity, in grandeur, in the essential spirit of immortality.”3 The New Review discussion exemplifies a larger debate at this time about what fiction should, or practically could, represent.

Because we’ve thoroughly codified the reduction of female characters to vulnerable bodies, we’ve ended up with an essentialist association between pain, femininity, and disempowerment. Male characters’ pain doesn’t result from disempowerment or oppression, and so its representation enables female novelists to explore suffering to various political and aesthetic ends. This dissertation illuminates how three Victorian women novelists use this same figure—the suffering man—to highlight different intersections between pain, gender, and the novel form. In Wuthering Heights (1847), Emily Brontë does not imagine a just world in which men’s violence is punished but rather creates an aesthetic space in which pain becomes a spiritualized artistic medium. Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South (1855), on the other hand, rejects the political expedience of a sensationless industrial masculinity and advocates instead for the pains of erotic love. Finally, Marie Corelli foments aesthetic and political heresy in her bestselling novel The Sorrows of Satan (1895), which combines Satan and Christ into a tortured outcast genius who both desires and rejects the approval of establishment authorities.

    “His most ardent desire is to be ranked with Zola and rejected by Mudie”: Gerard; or The World the Flesh and the Devil – M. E. Braddon’s Fin-de-Siècle Faustian Rewrite Janine Hatter Abstract Faust’s pact with the Devil and his subsequent decline into hedonism have been the basis for many rewritings and adaptations since Marlowe’s Elizabethan tragedy. Mary Elizabeth Braddon’s radical rewrite of the Faust myth from a fin-de-siècle perspective – Gerard; or the World, the Flesh, and the Devil (1891) – updates the conflict between God and the Devil vying for man’s soul into a non-supernatural tale to comment on fin-de- siècle bourgeois materialism, atheism and decadence. Braddon draws on two source texts for her adaptation: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Faust: A Tragedy (1808) and Honoré de Balzac’s La Peau de Chagrin (1831). Braddon’s three main characters critique different, yet interconnecting, social issues: the dandy hypnotist, Justin Jermyn, warns of the dangers of increasing pseudo-scientific knowledge; the nouveau riches Gerard Hillersdon illustrates the harm done to both mind and body when religious doubt and material culture collide; and the fallen woman, Hester, comments on women’s agitation for social change. Overall, Braddon’s combination novel transcends her trademark sensationalism to become an excellent example of the female aesthetic novel. "We Are Legion": Primal Dreams and Screams in the Satanic Screen Abstract Satan figures prominently in the Christian tradition as the ultimate Other, the enemy of our species, and he has been a central villain first in literature and now in horror films. Why viewers enjoy films that scare them is a conundrum of long standing. An explanation might come from the work of a new generation of Darwinists who have expanded on the master's findings to develop the field of evolutionary biology. Scholars in these fields believe that adaptation to the environment and survival of the fittest created not only physical forms for species but also behaviors that were adaptive for our primal ancestors and are now part of our genetic makeup as whispers within that nudge our actions and beliefs. Our response to film and literature is an important form of that behavior, and evolutionary biology would suggest that the whisperings would lead us to respond with pleasure to primal narratives inherited from adaptive experiences of our Paleolithic and Neolithic forebears.

The main texts analysed are Gaddis’s The Recognitions (1955) and Pynchon’s V. (1963) and Gravity’s Rainbow (1973). I present these works, which are underrepresented in broader studies of the literary tradition of the myth, as substantial contributions to the latter, while demonstrating how their thematic and stylistic proximity can be explained through their use of the myth itself.
