Historians seeking to penetrate the thoughts and emotions of ‘ordinary’ single middle-class women living during the Late Victorian and Edwardian years have a challenging task. These women rarely left personal documents for historians to analyse. Novels, particularly popular or bestselling novels, represent one pathway into this realm. Popular novels are numbered among the few written sources that are available to help historians to fill in some of the absences in the conventional historical record. -

In contrast to the male-dominated world of Victorian music, New Woman fiction is rife with women who not only wish to pursue music, but are brilliantly talented musicians and composers themselves. -

The book illustrates sins and values of the fin-de-siècle society and gives the image of Satan in a different from traditional perspective. The main aim of the research is to define moral values and vices of the late Victorian era and their reflection in the characters of Marie Corelli’s novel. Furthermore, the purpose of the study is to analyse the image of Satan/Lucio via his actions and his role in main characters’ life and fate. In addition to that, to compare vices of the 19th century with vices of the contemporary age to identify similarities and differences between views on sins/vices by analysing the image of Satan and his role in characters’ life in the TV series Lucifer (2016-2018: seasons 1-3) against the novel. The paper consists of four parts: the Introduction, Chapter I, Chapter II and the Conclusion. -

Riede, Advisor Jill Galvan Clare A. Simmons Copyright by Maria Eugenia Gonzalez-Posse 2012 Abstract The doll, as we conceive of it today, is the product of a Victorian cultural phenomenon. It was not until the middle of the nineteenth century that a dedicated doll industry was developed and that dolls began to find their way into children‘s literature, the rhetoric of femininity, periodical publications and canonical texts. Surprisingly, the Victorian fascination with the doll has largely gone unexamined and critics and readers have tended to dismiss dolls as mere agents of female acculturation. Guided by the recent material turn in Victorian studies and drawing extensively from texts only recently made available through digitization projects and periodical databases, my dissertation seeks to provide a richer account of the way this most fraught and symbolic of objects figured in the lives and imaginations of the Victorians. By studying the treatment of dolls in canonical literature alongside hitherto neglected texts and genres and framing these readings in their larger cultural contexts, the doll emerges not as a symbol of female passivity but as an object celebrated for its remarkable imaginative potential. The doll, I argue, is therefore best understood as a descendant of Galatea – as a woman turned object, but also as an object that Victorians constantly and variously brought to life through the imagination. -

Cults and Societies in Fin De Siècle Literature
SUMMARY Summary of Thesis submitted for Ph.D. degree by Sarah Jane Berry on Seeking God by Strange Ways: Cults and Societies in fin de siècle literature The general consensus regarding the role of Christianity at the fin de siècle is that while it did not cease to exist, technological and scientific advances had eroded the faith of many educated Victorians. Here, the term “seeking” suggests a spiritual journey with the aim of attaining a true understanding of the universe, which in occult circles is called esoteric knowledge or “gnosis”. One of the purposes of this thesis is to demonstrate how “seeking God by strange ways” in fin de siècle literature is a spiritual rite of passage to locate God in man and involves “lifting the veil” between this world and the spiritual realm. The late nineteenth century traveller seeking God enters a “period of margin” or transitional phase between two fixed states. As liminality is characterized by transformation or a process of “becoming”, some liminal beings live outside their normal environment and raise questions concerning their self, the existing social order and “the new hedonism”. The novels and authors featured here have been chosen to illustrate this thesis because they describe alternative religious cults and societies and spiritual rites of passage, while exploring social and cultural transitions. This exploration often brings with it abjection, marginalization and alienation. In addition to raising questions of “gender inversion”, sexual equality with notions of the “equalization of women and men” and “psychic androgyny”, the occult and mystical revival laid great stress on individual evolution and perfection. -

Abstract This thesis investigates the ways in which science and magic were brought together in fiction of the fin de siècle concerning ancient Egypt, in the works of popular including Bram Stoker, H. Rider Haggard and Marie Corelli. Notions of authenticity and artifice, fact and fiction, antiquity and modernity collided in the late nineteenth- century metropolis, where London’s academic institutions, occult organisations and theatrical exhibits of Egyptiana sat side by side. Writers who lived in this central hub are examined in relation to this unique geographical space that encouraged a sense of intimacy between these concepts. The influence of scientific discoveries demonstrated in the city’s lecture halls, including remarkable electrical phenomena, and occult undertakings such as Spiritualist séances, are traced within literature. -
