Genesis 2:15-17; 3:1-13; Hebrews 4:14-16; Matthew 4:1-11 February 18, 2018 First Sunday in Lent Preached by Philip Gladden at the Wallace Presbyterian Church, Wallace, NC NO DEAL WITH THE DEVIL Let us pray: Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, O Lord, our rock and our redeemer. Amen. Today at 2:00 p.m. the UNC-Wilmington theater department will present “Dr. Faustus.” The production will be set in a rock and roll dream world and is based on the 16th century play by Christopher Marlowe. The full title of the original play was “The Tragical History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus. Marlowe fashioned his play on old German folk tales about Doctor Faustus, an academic who made a deal with the devil, Lucifer, who is represented by the character Mephistophilis. Faustus gets bored with the regular academic subjects and trades his soul for twenty-four years of knowing and practicing the black arts and magic. Despite his misgivings about his deal with the devil as the end gets nearer, and frantic attempts to get out of the deal, Faustus is killed at the stroke of midnight.1 One legend says that when Doctor Faustus was first performed, actual devils showed up on stage and drove some audience members crazy. From that tragic story we get the phrase “a Faustian bargain.” This means trading in your values and morals, exchanging who you really are for some apparently awesome short-term goal. -

HV w i i.i.i am WEBER. i < Continued) T1IF Cleansing of the Temple has a double aspect It was, on the one hand, an attack upon the chief priests and their allies, the scribes. On the other hand, it was a bold stroke for the re- ligions liberty of the people. From both sides there must have come an answer. His enemies could not simply ignore what happened. Unless they were ready to accept the Galilean as their master, they were compelled to think of ways and means by which to defeat him. At the same time, his friends and admirers would discuss his valiant deed and formulate certain conclusions as to his character and authority, the more so as the chief priests themselves had first broached that question in public. Thus we may expect a twofold answer to the challenge of Jesus provided the Gospels have pre-erved a complete account. The story of the Cleansing of the Temple is not continued at once. It is followed in all four Gospels by a rather copious collec- tion of sayings of Jesus. Especially the Synoptists represent him as teaching in the temple as well as on his way to and from that sanc- tuary. Those teachings consist of three groups. The first com- prises parables and sayings which are found in one Gospel only. The second contains discourses vouched tor by two oi the Gospels. The third belongs to all three. The first two groups may be put aside without any further examination because they do not form part of the common Synoptic source. -

Page 117 FILM REVIEWS Year of the Remake: The Omen 666 and The Wicker Man Jenny McDonnell The current trend for remakes of 1970s horror movies continued throughout 2006, with the release on 6 June of John Moore’s The Omen 666 (a sceneforscene reconstruction of Richard Donner’s 1976 The Omen) and the release on 1 September of Neil LaBute’s The Wicker Man (a reimagining of Robin Hardy’s 1973 film of the same name). In addition, audiences were treated to remakes of The Hills Have Eyes, Black Christmas (due Christmas 2006) and When a Stranger Calls (a film that had previously been ‘remade’ as the opening sequence of Scream). Finally, there was Pulse, a remake of the Japanese film Kairo, and another addition to the body of remakes of nonEnglish language horror films such as The Ring, The Grudge and Dark Water. Unsurprisingly, this slew of remakes has raised eyebrows and questions alike about Hollywood’s apparent inability to produce innovative material. As the remakes have mounted in recent years, from Planet of the Apes to King Kong, the cries have grown ever louder: Hollywood, it would appear, has run out of fresh ideas and has contributed to its evergrowing bank balance by quarrying the classics. Amid these accusations of Hollywood’s imaginative and moral bankruptcy to commercial ends in tampering with the films on which generations of cinephiles have been reared, it can prove difficult to keep a level head when viewing films like The Omen 666 and The Wicker Man. -

Species Status Assessment Class: Lepidoptera Family: Noctuidae Scientific Name: Catocala jair Common Name: Jair underwing Species synopsis: Two subspecies of Catocala exist-- Catocala jair and Catocala jair ssp2. Both occur in New York. Subspecies 2 has seldom been correctly identified leading to false statements that the species is strictly Floridian. Nearly all literature on the species neglects the widespread "subspecies 2." Cromartie and Schweitzer (1997) had it correct. Sargent (1976) discussed and illustrated the taxon but was undecided as to whether it was C. jair. It has also been called C. amica form or variety nerissa and one Syntype of that arguably valid taxon is jair and another is lineella. The latter should be chosen as a Lectotype to preserve the long standing use of jair for this species. Both D.F. Schweitzer and L.F. Gall have determined that subspecies 2 and typical jair are conspecific. The unnamed taxon should be named but there is little chance it is a separate species (NatureServe 2012). I. Status a. 1 Game Session Fifty five: Whispered secrets unfolding - 1 (played Dec 2 nd , 2012) March 28 th , 748 – 10h00 am The heroes put a table under the raised portcullis, to prevent it to close behind them after they passed under it. They anticipate that one of the evil spirits will be encountered in what looks like an oubliette, so they do healing before they enter. Opened iron doors line the walls of this room. In the middle, a ten-foot-square metal grating lies over a dark pit in the floor. A thick rope has been tied to the grating and dangles into the dark pit below... Entering the room, they realize they are the first living creature entering this place for decades... Suddenly, something gets out from the pit, through the metal grate and it shrieks madly, waving an axe over its head! His arms are very long and his legs bent at improbable angles. It’s the Lopper! Quickly, Austizel throws ghost touch arrows, and MacRazbunare hits it with a disrupt undead . But the Lopper hits Petrak and Varadan. The wounds from the ghost axe looks like profound cuts from a tiny hatchet, and it bleeds profusely. At their horror, the heroes notice some of the blood turning to smoke, and flying to the Lopper, and it seems to heal him! More ghost touch arrows from Exigu this time, and another disrupt undead from Varadan. Tora wants to hit it with positive healing but he doesn’t touch the Lopper. Then Petrak identified the Lopper as not being a haunt, like the others, but as a sinister wraith! More bleeding from the Lopper’s cuts fly back to the killer, healing him… Patu runs away, because he just saw a swarm of ghostly rats pass through the wall and attack Exigu. -

Faust Among the Witches: Towards an Ethics of Representation —David Hawkes I 1. Money rules the postmodern world, and money is an efficacious, or "performative," sign: a medium of representation that attains practical power. As we might expect, therefore, the concept of the performative sign is theoretically central to the postmodern era' s philosophy, politics, psychology, linguistics and -- a forteriori -- its economics. All of these disciplines, in their postmodern forms, privilege the performative, rather than the denotative, aspect of signs. They all assume that signs do things, and that the objective world is constructed for us via the realm of signification. In the work of such philosophers as Jacques Derrida and Judith Butler, the performative sign even acquires a vague association with political radicalism, since its power can be used to deconstruct such allegedly repressive chimeras as essence and self-identity. 2. The argument that signs are performative by nature leads to the conclusion that there is no prelinguistic or nonmaterial human subject, since subjective intention is irrelevant to the sign's efficacy. The idea that the subject is material thus takes its place alongside the notion that representation is efficacious as a central tenet of postmodern thought. It is not difficult to point to the connection between these ideas in the field of "economics." Money is an externalized representation of abstract human labor power -- that is to say, of human subjective activity, of human life. In addition to being a system of autonomous representation, then, money is the incarnation of objectified subjectivity. It is thus hardly surprising to find that the idea that the subject is material, that it is an object, is very prevalent in postmodern thought, or that materialism dominates intellectual disciplines from sociobiology to literary criticism. -
