Page 2 |February 23, 2020 PASTOR'S WEEKLY MESSAGE 7th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A, February 23, 2020 Jesus continues his sermon on the Mount in today’s gospel. He expounds on the Christian ideal way of living. It is no longer the law of “a tooth for a tooth” as stated by Moses, it now the law of love. According to the Mosaic Law: “Anyone who injures a neighbor shall receive the same in return, broken limb for broken limb, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. As the injury inflicted, so will be the injury suffered” (Leviticus 24: 19-20). That law of ‘tooth for tooth’ was to prevent unlimited retaliation. Jesus gives a new commandment of “turning the other cheek,” asking his disciples to replace offense with kindness. It is no longer a law of “love your neighbor and hate your enemy” but rather a law of “love your neighbor and love your enemy.” Jesus sets a new standard for us Christians, the standard of being perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect. The Greek word telios is translated to mean perfect. This word refers to something being completed or brought to its full purpose, potential and intended end. God is already perfect but we are called to move towards the perfection of God. How is our Father in heaven perfect? He allows his sun to rise on the bad and the good, he causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust. His love does not have a boundary. This is what God does because he is divine. We are called to imitate the Father in mercy and holiness. The Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us "All Christians in any state or walk of life are called to the fullness of Christian life and to the perfection of charity. All are called to holiness: "Be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect." (CCC #2013). The parallel passage in the gospel of St. Luke equates perfection with mercy: “Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful” (Luke 6:36). The commandment of Jesus that we have to be perfect as the Father may appears unachievable since we are mortal beings and humans. If we see perfection as being “blameless and sinless,” as never again making a wrong choice, then it might be impossible. But if we remember that our Christian journey is a process then we will see every step we take towards the goal as an important step of faith. We must keep aiming at achieving the ultimate goal of perfection as the Father. Let us begin with the simple gestures of our everyday living by showing love, respect and care for others. If only we realize the power of God in us! St. Paul in the second reading today asked the question: Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? Imagine God dwelling within you and I. This is why it is important for us to show respect for people because there is God in them. When we respect them, when we love them, we are also respecting God and loving God. Because God dwells in us, we are able to keep moving towards that perfection that Jesus Christ asked of us today. May the power of God within us give us the courage to keep trying to be like the Father in love and care for everyone! Lent begins this Ash Wednesday, February 26, 2020. This is going to be forty days of intense prayer, fasting, and almsgiving in preparation for the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus at Easter. Forty days of lent remind us of the forty days and nights Moses spent before the Lord fasting for the sins of the people of Israel (cf. Deut. 9:18ff). We are also reminded of the forty days and forty nights spent by Jesus in the wilderness, fasting and praying before he began his public ministry (Matthew 4:1-11). Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fast. On days of fast, one full meal and two lesser meals are allowed. Eating between meals is not permitted. Catholics who have completed their 18th year are bound by this law until the beginning of their 60th year. I encourage those who can fast all through Lent (excluding Sundays) to do so. Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence. On days of abstinence, meat may not be taken. The law of abstinence binds all Catholics who have completed their 14th year. Again, we are all encouraged to abstain from some other lawful things that we enjoy doing. Giving such things up can help us to appreciate the suffer- ing of others. We unite such pains and sufferings with that of our Redeemer and Lord, Jesus Christ. I wish everyone a fruitful Lenten Season! Fr. Felix I. • Two Answers to the Challenge of Jesus
TWO ANSWERS TO THE CHALLENGE OF JESUS. HV w i i.i.i am WEBER. i < Continued) T1IF Cleansing of the Temple has a double aspect It was, on the one hand, an attack upon the chief priests and their allies, the scribes. On the other hand, it was a bold stroke for the re- ligions liberty of the people. From both sides there must have come an answer. His enemies could not simply ignore what happened. Unless they were ready to accept the Galilean as their master, they were compelled to think of ways and means by which to defeat him. At the same time, his friends and admirers would discuss his valiant deed and formulate certain conclusions as to his character and authority, the more so as the chief priests themselves had first broached that question in public. Thus we may expect a twofold answer to the challenge of Jesus provided the Gospels have pre-erved a complete account. The story of the Cleansing of the Temple is not continued at once. It is followed in all four Gospels by a rather copious collec- tion of sayings of Jesus. Especially the Synoptists represent him as teaching in the temple as well as on his way to and from that sanc- tuary. Those teachings consist of three groups. The first com- prises parables and sayings which are found in one Gospel only. The second contains discourses vouched tor by two oi the Gospels. The third belongs to all three. The first two groups may be put aside without any further examination because they do not form part of the common Synoptic source.

Commentaries on the Gospel of Mark are eager to point out the unique quality of this particular miracle story. It is noted by Eugene Boring, Robert Guelich, William Lane, and Bas M.F. Van Iersel— authors of the four single volume commentaries with which we will initially engage—that “The Healing of the Gerasene Demoniac” breaks the traditional form of an exorcism story in both its length and detail.1 It is also the single longest episode in Mark’s Gospel.

  • The Story of Jesus and Legion
Bible Story Discussion THE STORY OF JESUS AND LEGION Jesus is the ruler over all things. In this story, listen how he showed his power even over the demons that followed Satan. Let's Get Started Episode Theme: Exploring God’s Design - Jesus the Savior 1. Throughout the gospels in the New Testament, we read lots of stories about Jesus having power over all sorts of things. Can you think of some of the things that Jesus had power over or some of the miracles he performed? 2. Sometimes we have to face some pretty difficult things in our lives. Can you think of a difficult time when it felt like you were powerless or had no control? How do you think the man who was under the control of Legion felt? Memory Verse For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!” Mark 5:8 After You Listen Jesus had just finished showing his disciples that he had power over nature when they came upon a man possessed by many evil spirits. No one could talk to this man or control him. Everyone ran away from him. But not Jesus. Jesus didn’t just have power over the wind and waves. He had power over evil spirits too! And he wouldn’t just let this man stay enslaved to them. Jesus sent the evil spirits out of the man and made him into someone new. But the story doesn’t end there. After this man had been restored and Jesus and his disciples had moved on, the man traveled around the area telling everyone he met what Jesus had done for him.

THE MIRACLES OF JESUS CHRIST MIRACLE FOURTEEN: Delivering the Maniac of Gadara (Mt. 8:28-34; Mk. 5:1-20; Lk. 8:26-39) SURVEY Upon stepping ashore in the land of Gadara, Jesus is confronted by and speaks to the leader of a band of demons who were possessing a violent and uncontrollable maniac. The Savior orders them to leave the victim, and, at their request, permits them to enter a herd of nearby pigs, which results in the death of those animals by drowning as they plunge into the Sea of Galilee. Moscicke, B.A., M.A. Marquette University, 2019 Ancient Christians often interpreted the death of Jesus through the lens of Leviticus 16, conceiving Jesus as both the immolated “goat for Yahweh,” whose blood the high priest brought into the Holy of Holies once a year to purge Israel’s sins, and the “goat for Azazel,” which bore Israel’s iniquity into the wilderness far away from God’s presence. Such an understanding of Jesus’s death did not strike theologians such as the author of the Epistle of Barnabas, Justin Martyr, Tertullian, Hippolytus, Origen, Jerome, Cyril of Alexandria, and the earliest Markan commentator as strange. What is strange is how seldom modern critics have scrutinized the potential impact of early

A Portrait of Pontius Pilate PASTOR RANDY BEZET MARCH 17 + 18, 2018 Matthew 27:22 (NIV) “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?” Pilate asked. When it comes to Jesus, you can’t be neutral. Deuteronomy 30:19 (NLT) Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life... Will you do what’s popular? Reject Him. Matthew 27:22 (NIV) [The crowd] all answered, “Crucify him!” 1 Peter 2:7-9 (NLT) 7 Yes, you who trust him recognize the honor God has given him. But for those who reject him, “The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.” 8 And, “He is the stone that makes people stumble, the rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they do not obey God’s word... 9 But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. John 17:14-19 (NLT) 14 “And the world hates them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. 15 I’m not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one. 16 They do not belong to this world any more than I do.
