SURVEY

JesuswasteachingonthisoccasionwhenHewassuddenlyandviolentlyconfrontedby ademonpossessedman.ThespiritimmediatelyrecognizedJesusastheSonof ,and,attheSavior'scommand,lefthisvictim. SIGNIFICANCE ● ThisisthefirstofsevenmiracleswhereJesuscastsoutevilspirits.Fortheother instances,seemiracles12,14,18,21,25,and28. ● Thisisthefirstofatleast3occasionswhenevilspiritsgaveterrified testimonythatJesuswasindeedGod'sSon.Note: "Anduncleanspirits,whentheysawhim,felldownbeforehim,andcried, saying,ThouarttheSonofGod"(Mark3:11). "Andalsocameoutofmany,cryingout,andsaying,ThouartChristthe SonofGod.Andherebukingthemsufferedthemnottospeak:fortheyknew thathewasChrist "(Luke4:41). Jameswouldlaterwriteofthis: "ThoubelievestthatthereisoneGod;thoudoestwell:thedevilsalsobelieve, andtremble" (James2:19).

● Itcanbetrulysaidthatinthedemonic,unliketheworldofsinfulmen, therearenoathiests!Theseevilspiritsknewexactlywithwhomtheywere dealing.Note: 1. ThedemoncalledHim"Jesusof,"acknowledgingtheSavior's humanity. 2. ThedemoncalledHim,"thouSonofGod,"acknowledgingtheSavior's deity. Delivering a Blind and Mute Demoniac (Matt. 12:22; :14)

Jesusdeliversthispoorwretchedmanofhisdemon,andrestoresbothhisspeechand sight.ThewickedthereuponaccuseHimofdoingthismiraclethroughthe powerof. SIGNIFICANCE ● ThisisboththeshortestandmostactionpackedofallHismiracles! SPIRITUAL TRUTHS

● Jesusprobablydidmoreforthepersoninvolvedthancanbefoundinany othermiracle.Itwouldbedifficulttoimaginebeinginamoredesperate situationthantheonethatisdescribedatthispoint.Herewasablind,deaf, mute,anddemonpossessedman.ButthenJesuspassedby.Andtheresults? 1. Themancouldsee. 2. Themancouldhear. 3. Themancouldspeak. 4. Themancouldworship. ● Thus,inasplitsecondhereceivedsight,sound,speech,and(probably) salvation. ● ThebythewickedPhariseesthatHehaddonethismiraclethrough thepowerofSatanpromptedJesustowarntheminregardstotheunpardonable . "ButwhenthePhariseesheardit,theysaid,Thisfellowdothnotcastoutdevils, butbytheprinceofthedevils…WhereforeIsayuntoyou,Allmanner 4 ofsinandshallbeforgivenuntomen:buttheblasphemyagainstthe HolyGhostshallnotbeforgivenuntomen.Andwhosoeverspeakethaword againsttheSonofman,itshallbeforgivenhim:butwhosoeverspeakethagainst theHolyGhost,itshallnotbeforgivenhim,neitherinthisworld,neitherinthe worldtocome"(Matt.12:24,3132). Delivering the Maniac of Gadara (Matt. 8:28-34; :1-20; Luke 8:26-39)

UponsteppingashoreinthelandofGadara,Jesusisconfrontedbyandspeakstothe leaderofabandofdemonswhowerepossessingaviolentanduncontrollablemaniac. TheSaviorordersthemtoleavethevictim,and,attheirrequest,permitsthemtoenter aherdofnearby,whichresultsintheofthoseanimalsbydrowningasthey plungeintotheSeaof. SIGNIFICANCE ● Thisisperhapsthemostgraphicandterrifyingaccountofdemonpossessionin alltheBible.Notetherecordedfactsregardingthisman: 1. Hishome—“Whohadhisdwellingamongthetombs” (Mark5:3). 2. Hishelplessness a. Hewasnaked(Luke8:27) b. Hewas“exceedingfierce”(Matt.8:28) c. Hewastotallyunmanageable(Mark5:34) d. Hewasconstantlycryingandcuttinghimselfwithstones (Mark5:5) e. Hewasseizeduponanddrivenaboutbyaofdemons (Luke8:29;Mark5:9)Theusageoftheword legion heremay indicatethemanwaspossessedbyasmanyas6000demons. ● ThisshowsjusthowmanyfallentheremaybeifSatancouldaffordto spare6000onaworthlessmadman! ● ItistheonlyrecordedextendedconversationbetweenJesusandademon. ● ThisisthefirstoftwooccasionsonwhichJesusperformedamiracleinaway thathaddestructiveresults(thedeathofthepigs).Theothermiraclewasthe witheringofthefigtree(Matt.21:19) ● ThisistheonlymiraclewhereJesusinstructedtherecipientasfollows: “GohometothyfriendsandtellthemhowgreatthingstheLordhathdonefor thee,andhathhadcompassiononthee” (Mark5:19).

5 ThisisinstarkcontrastasseenintheotherhealingmiracleswhereJesus commandedthehealed not totellanyone! SPIRITUAL TRUTHS ● Whatacontrastisseeninthiswretcheddemoniacfollowinghisglorious conversion:Henowis: 1. Sitting,notscreaming. 2. Praising,notcursing. 3. Dressed,notnaked. 4. Inhisrightmind,notinsane. 5. AconvertofChrist,notacaptiveofSatan. ● Thisaccountmightwellbeentitled, “HowAMadmanBecameaMissionary.” WehavepreviouslyobservedJesus’instructionsthatheshouldtellotherswhat hadbeendone,whichhedid. “Andhedeparted,andbegantopublishinDecapolishowgreatthingsJesushad doneforhim:andallmendidmarvel” (Mark5:20) Decapolis(literally, “tencities" )wasaleagueoftencitiescharacterizedbyhigh Greekculture,alliedtogetherforpurposesoftrading.Allbutonecity (Scythopolis)wereeastoftheGalileanSeaandJordanRiver.Thisconvertthus becamethegreatestmissionarytosincethepreachertoNineveh, the. ● Whydidthedemonsdesirethebodiesofpigs?Severalreasonshavebeen suggested: 1. TokillJesusandhisdisciples.Fewanimalsaremoredangerousthan angrywildpigs. 2. ToturnthecommunityagainstJesusbydrowningthepigs.Ifthiswas theplan,theysucceeded. Notethetragicreactionofthecrowd: “Thentheywentouttoseewhatwasdone;andcametoJesus,andfoundthe man,outofwhomthedevilsweredeparted,sittingatthefeetofJesus,clothed, andinhisrightmind:andtheywereafraid…Thenthewholemultitudeofthe countryoftheGadarenesroundaboutbesoughthimtodepartfromthem;for theyweretakenwithgreatfear:andhewentupintotheship,andreturned backagain” (Luke8:35,37). ● Thesepeopleweremoreinterestedinmoneythaninmen.Theypreferred goldtoGod.TheywantedtheirpigsmorethantheydesiredwhatChristhadto offer.JohnOxenhamhasvividlycapturedtheirtragicphilosophyinhispoem:

6 ,begone! Thypowersbringlosstousandours;OurwaysarenotasThine— Thoulovestmen—weswine. OgetTheegone,OHolyOne, AndtakethesefoolsofThine; Theirsouls?Whatcarewefortheirsouls? Sincewehavelostourswine. ThenChristwentsadly, Hehadwroughtforthemasign Ofloveandtendernessdivine— Theywantedswine. Christstandswithoutyourdoorandgentlyknocks, Butifyourgoldorswinetheentranceblocks Heforcesnoman’shold,Hewilldepart, Andleaveyoutothetreasuresofyourheart. From “Gadara, A.D.31” ● Notetheterriblefearexhibitedbythishordeofdemonsinthepresenceof Jesus: 1. Theyknewhim—“Andbehold,theycriedout,saying,Whathavewetodo withthee,Jesus,thouSonofGod?” (Matt.8:29). 2. Theyfearedhim—“Artthoucomehithertotormentusbeforethe?” (Matt.8:29) “IadjuretheebyGod,thatthoutormentmenot” (Mark5:7b) ● Theyapparentlyknewaboutfuturejudgment.VariousNewTestamentwriters attesttothisjudgmentoffallenangels. 1. Paul: “Knowyenotthatweshalljudgeangels?Howmuchmorethings thatpertaintothislife?” (1Cor.6:3). 2. Peter: “ForifGodsparednottheangelsthatsinned,butcastthemdown to,anddeliveredthemintochainsofdarkness,tobereservedunto judgment”(2Peter2:4). 3. Jude: “Andtheangelswhichkeptnottheirfirstestate,butlefttheirown habitation,hehathreservedineverlastingchainsunderdarknessuntothe judgmentofthegreatday”(Jude6). Infact,Jesussaidthathellitselfwasoriginallycreatedfortheandhis angels,allofwhichwilleventuallyspendeternitythere.

7 “Thenshallhesayalsountothemonthelefthand,Departfromme,yecursed, intoeverlastingfire,preparedforthedevilandhisangels” (Matt.25:41). “And thedevilthatdeceivedthemwascastintothelakeoffireandbrimstone,where thebeastandthefalseprophetare,andshallbetormenteddayandnightfor everandever” (Rev.20:10). ● TheaccountinMatthew’sinformsustherewereactually two demon possessedmenonthisoccasion(Matt.8:28).Onewonderswhathappenedto theotherman.Washealsogloriouslydelivered?Or,tragically,wouldhebelike theunrepentantthiefonthecross?(SeeLuke24:3943)

Delivering a Mute Demoniac (Matt. 9:32-33)

Jesushealsthispoormanwhoimmediatelybeginstospeak,causingthewatching crowdtogaspinamazement. SIGNIFICANCE ● ThisisthesecondoftwooccasionswhereJesuswasaccusedofperforming HismiraclesintheenergyofSatan.Thesetwoare: 1. "ButwhenthePhariseesheardit,theysaid,Thisfellowdothnotcastout devils,butbyBeelzebubtheprinceofthedevils"(Matt.12:24). 2. "ButthePhariseessaid,Hecastethoutdevilsthroughtheprinceofthe devils" (Matt.9:34) ● OnfourotherlateroccasionsthewickedPhariseeswouldaccuseJesusof preachingHismessagesbythepowerofthedevil. 1. "Thepeopleansweredandsaid,Thouhastadevil:whogoethabouttokill thee?" (John7:20). 2. "Thenansweredthe,andsaiduntohim,Saywenotwellthatthou artaSamaritan,andhastadevil?" (John8:48). 3. "ThensaidtheJewsuntohim,Nowweknowthatthouhastadevil. isdead,andthe;andthousayest,Ifamankeepmy saying,heshallnevertasteofdeath" (John8:52). 4. "Andmanyofthemsaid,Hehathadevil,andismad;whyhearyehim?" (John10:20). 8 SPIRITUAL TRUTHS ● CharlesWesley'sgreathymn, "OForAThousandTongues" ,beautifully summarizesthismiracle.Notethewordsofstanzanumberfive: "HearHim,yedeaf;Hispraise,yedumb, Yourloosenedtonguesemploy; Yeblind,beholdyourSaviorcome; Andleap,yelame,forjoy." ● Notethetestimonyofthecrowdfollowingthismiracle: "ItwasneversoseeninIsrael" (Matt.9:33). Howtrue,fortherewasneversuchamansoseeninIsraelasthisman!Note thefollowingtestimonieswhichconfirmthisfact: 1. "ThesamecametoJesusbynight,andsaiduntohim,Rabbi,weknow thatthouartateachercomefromGod:fornomancandothesemiracles thatthoudoest,exceptGodbewithhim" (John3:2). 2. Hishometownpeople "Andwhenhewascomeintohisowncountry,hetaughtthemintheir synagogue,insomuchthattheywereastonished,andsaid,Whencehath thismanthiswisdom,andthesemightyworks?Isnotthisthecarpenter's son?isnothismothercalledMary?andhisbrethren,James,and, andSimon,andJudas?" (Matt.13:5455). 3. Somesoldiersin "ThencametheofficerstothechiefpriestsandPharisees;andtheysaid untothem,Whyhaveyenotbroughthim?Theofficersanswered,Never manspakelikethisman" (John7:4546).

Delivering a Syrophenician’s Daughter (Matt. 15:21-28; :24-30)

Jesusbeginsthismiraclebytestingthefaithofthedesperatemotherwho beggedHimtohealherdemonpossesseddaughter. ● The: “Itisnotrighttotakethechildren’sbread (areferencetothe Jews) andfeedittodogs (areferencetoGentiles).” Themother: “Yes,Lord,buteventhedogsunderthetableeatthechildren’s crumbs.” 9 Needlesstosay,shehadpassedthetestwithflyingcolorsandherdaughterwas deliveredthatveryinstant. SIGNIFICANCE ● ThisistheonlymiraclewhereJesuswastemporarilysilentandnoncommitalin regardtoamiracleforhealing. ● Itisthesecondoftwomiraclesinvolvingayounggirl.Forthefirst,see miracle16. SPIRITUAL TRUTHS ● NotehowMatthewintroducesthismiracle: “ACanaanitewomanfromthat vicinitycametohim,cryingout,Lord...havemercyonme!” (Matt.15:22). W.L.Pettingillwrites: ItwillnotbeforgottenthatthiswomanwasaGentile,andnotonlya Gentile,butaCanaanite,arepresentativeofthatracewhichwasunder God’speculiarcurse.‘ThoushaltdriveouttheCanaanites’—thiswasthe wordtoIsraelupontheirenteringthelandof;andthepromiseof Zechariah14:21,lookingforwardtotherestoredlandandrestoredtemple worship,says,‘InthatdaythereshallbenomoretheCanaaniteinthe houseofJehovahofhosts.’Butgraceiswithoutanylimitandoverleaps allobstacles.ThroughIsrael’sfailure,thisdespisedoutcastreceivesthe blessingoftheLordthatmakethrich.Itisatfirstamostastonishing thingtoseetheLordJesusrefusingtorespondtothiswoman’scryof need.Itissounlikehim,whoseearsarealwaysopentotheslightestcall uponhisname.Buthecannotanswerher.Sheiscallinguponhimasthe Sonof;andsoheis,butassuch—asSonofDavid—hehasnothing todowithaCanaanite.(TheGospeloftheKingdom, Fundamental Publishers, Findlay,Ohio,p.183.) ● UsuallyitwastheficklecrowdsthatkeptseekersfromHim,butonthisoccasion andatleastoneother,itwasthedisciplesthemselves!Note: 1. “Butheansweredhernotaword.Andhisdisciplescameandbesought him,saying,Sendheraway;forshecriethafterus” (Matt.15:23). 2. “Thenweretherebroughtuntohimlittlechildren,thatheshouldputhis handsonthem,andpray:andthedisciplesrebukedthem” (Matt.19:13). ● Thisyounggirlnowjoinsanumberofdemonpossessedfemalestobedelivered byJesus.Note: 10 1. “NowwhenJesuswasrisenearlythefirstdayoftheweek,heappeared firsttoMaryMagdalene,outofwhomhehadcastsevendevils” (Mark16:9). 2. “Andcertainwomen,whichhadbeenhealedofevilspiritsandinfirmities, MarycalledMagdalene,outofwhomwentsevendevils” (Luke8:2). Delivering a Demon-Possessed Boy (Matt. 17:14-18; :14-29; :38-42)

SURVEY AdesperatefatherbegsJesustodeliverhistormentedsonfromacruelandvicious demonwhowouldcausehimtofallintofireandwater,casthimtotheground,throw himintoconvulsions,andwasslowlykillinghim.Notetheensuingconversation: Thefather: “Ifyoucandoanything,pleasedoit.” TheSavior: “Ifyoubelieve,Icandoallthings.” Thefather: “Lord,Ibelieve—helpthoumyunbelief.” Withthis,Jesusrebukedtheevilspiritandfreedtheson. SIGNIFICANCE

● ThisisthefinalofthreeinstancesinwhichJesuswouldsupernaturallyminister toanonlychild. 1. Heraisedfromthedeadtheonlysonofawidow(Luke7:12). 2. HeraisedfromthedeadtheonlydaughterofJairus(Luke8:42). ● Itistheonlymiracleshowingtheutterinabilityofthedisciplestohelpthe personinneed. 1. Astestifiedtobythefather “AndIbesoughtthydisciplestocasthimout;andtheycouldnot” (Luke9:40). 2. Astestifiedtobythedisciplesthemselves “ThencamethedisciplestoJesusapart,andsaid,Whycouldnotwecast himout?”(Matt.17:19). ● Thisisthesecondoftwoofthemostfrightfulandgraphicdescriptionsregarding thehorrorsofdemonpossessionintheentireBible!Forthefirst,seemiracle14. 11 SPIRITUAL TRUTHS ● LeavingtheMountofTransfiguration,ourLordentersthevalleyofdisfiguration. Onthemountain,thefriendsof(and)hadcomfortedHim. Inthevalley,thefoesofhellwouldchallengeHim!Inessence,thesewords servetosummarizeJesus’ministryandmission.Heleftthegloriesofheaven andtheworshipofangelstoendurethegriefofearthandthewickednessof men. ● AsHisfaithfulfollowerswearecalledupontodothesame.NotePaul’s words: “BlessedbeGod,eventheFatherofourLordJesusChrist,theFather ofmercies,andtheGodofallcomfort;Whocomfortethusinallour tribulation,thatwemaybeabletocomfortthemwhichareinanytrouble,bythe comfortwherewithweourselvesarecomfortedofGod.Forasthe sufferingsofChristaboundinus,soourconsolationalsoaboundethby Christ”(2Cor.1:35). Thus,inchurchthebelievermaysingabout“ TheSweetByandBy ”butupon leaving,heenterstheworldofthe “NastyNowandNow!” ● NotetheFather’sstruggleforfaith: “Andstraightwaythefatherofthechildcriedout,andsaidwithtears,Lord,I believe;helpthoumineunbelief” (Mark9:24). Thiskindofstruggling,desperatefaith,eventhoughplaguedwithdoubt,will reachtheheartofGodimmediately.Thepsalmistspokeofthis: “Likeafatherpitiethhischildren,sotheLordpitieththemthatfearhim.Forhe knowethourframe;heremembereththatwearedust” (Psa.103:1314). Question: HowmuchfaithdoesittaketopleaseGod? Response: Howmuchfaithdoyouhave? Illustration:Letussupposeyoufaceamilliondollarneedbutonlyhavea 10dollarbill.God’splaninsolvingthisisbothgraciousand simple:GiveHimyour10dollarsandhewilladdtheremaining $999,990.Howeversmallourfaith,Hewantsitall.Ourproblem, however,isthatalltoooftenweshortchangeHimonthe10 dollars. ● Whycouldnotthediscipleshelpthisdesperatefatherandhisdemon possessedson? Ontwopreviousoccasions,theyhadbeenabletocastoutdemons. 12 “Andtheycastoutmanydevils,andanointedwithoilmanythatweresick,and healedthem” (Mark6:13). “Andtheseventyreturnedagainwithjoy,saying,Lordeventhedevilsare subjectuntousthroughthyname” (Luke10:17). Whythencouldtheynothelpthisheartbrokenfather?Therewereatleast fourreasons. 1. Theyhadtoolittlefaith(Matt.17:20) 2. Theyhadtoolittleselfdenial(Mark9:29) 3. Theyhadtoolittle(Mark9:29) 4. Theyhadtoomuchbickering(Mark9:14) ItissoeasytobecomeanIchabodChristian(meaning “thegloryoftheLord hathdeparted”)(see1Sam.4:2122)withoutevenbeingawareofituntilthe crisiscomes. TheOldTestamentstrongmanSamsonservesasaclassicandtragicexampleof thisverything! “Thathetoldherallhisheart,andsaiduntoher,Therehathnotcomearazor uponminehead;forIhavebeenaNazariteuntoGodfrommymother'swomb: ifIbeshaven,thenmystrengthwillgofromme,andIshallbecomeweak,and belikeanyotherman.AndwhenDelilahsawthathehadtoldherallhisheart, shesentandcalledforthelordsofthe,saying,Comeupthisonce,for hehathshewedmeallhisheart.ThenthelordsofthePhilistinescameupunto her,andbroughtmoneyintheirhand.Andshemadehimsleepuponherknees; andshecalledforaman,andshecausedhimtoshaveoffthesevenlocksofhis head;andshebegantoafflicthim,andhisstrengthwentfromhim.Andshe said,ThePhilistinesbeuponthee,Samson.Andheawokeoutofhissleep,and said,Iwillgooutasatotherbefore,andshakemyself.Andhewistnot thattheLORDwasdepartedfromhim”(Judges16:1720). Healing a Crippled Woman on the Sabbath (Luke 13:10-17) SURVEY

Jesusencounteredthiswomanwhohadbeenbentoverfor18longyearswhileHewas teachinginasynagogue.Callingherforward,Hesaid: "Woman,youaresetfreefromyourinfirmity." Inthiscase,18years(Luke13:11) 2. Thatofawomanwithanissueofblood,12years(Matt.9:20) 3. Thatofacrippledman,38years(John5:5) SPIRITUAL TRUTHS ● Thiswomanwasprobablyabeliever.Jesusreferstoheras "adaughterof Abraham." Inaddition,thetextindicatesthatshewasafaithfulmemberofthe synagogue(Luke13:1011). ● Inspiteofthis,shehadbeenboundbySatanfornearlytwodecades.Hereit shouldbesaidthatalthoughSatan(orhisfallenangels)cannotpossessa believer,hecanoppressandphysicallyafflictachildofGod.Therearetwo classicexamplesofthissatanicphysicalafflictionintheScriptures. 1. ● ThismarksthefirstofthreepersonsraisedfromthedeadbyChrist.The othertwoareJairus'daughter(Luke8:5456)andLazarus(John11:43).The lasthadoccurredsomesevencenturiesprevioustothiswhenthe bonesofhadrestoredtolifeayoungman(2Kings13:2022). ● ThisisthefirstrecordedinstanceinwhichJesuswasrecognizedbythe Jewishcrowdsasaprophet,althoughtheearliestacknowledgmentcamefroma nonJewishSamaritanwoman(seeJohn4:19). 1. Wrong.Thisispreciselythetimeforabelieverto “trouble...theMaster.” Asthesongadmonishes: “Gotanyriversyouthinkareuncrossable? Gotanymountainsyoucan’ttunnelthrough? Godspecializesinthingsthoughtimpossible. TheNewTestamentrelatesthreeincidentsbetweenThomasandChrist.The GospelofJohnrecordsallthree.Ineachofthemhelivesuptohisreputationas DoubtingThomas. 1. Herehedoubtsthepower ofChrist. 2. IntheUpperRoomhedoubtsthepromise ofChrist. "Thomassaithunto him,Lordweknownotwhitherthougoest;andhowcanweknowthe way?" (John14:5). 3. Aftertheresurrectionheatfirstdoubtedtheveryperson ofChrist. (John20:2429) "ButThomas,oneofthetwelve,calledDidymus,wasnotwiththemwhen Jesuscame.Theotherdisciplesthereforesaiduntohim,Wehaveseen 19 theLORD.Buthesaiduntothem,ExceptIshallseeinhishandstheprint ofthenails,andputmyfingerintotheprintofthenails,andthrustmy handintohisside,Iwillnotbelieve" (John20:2425). ● WenotethathewaiteduntilLazarushadbeendeadforfourdays.Hemay havedonethisbecauseofthesuperstitionamongtheJewsthatafterdeaththe spirithoveredoverthebodyforthreedays,andaresurrectionuptothattime wasatleastremotelypossible.Butafterthisperiod,allhopewasgone. ● Martha,andnotMary,istheheroineofthisstory.(SeeLuke10:3842where theoppositewastrue.) 1. ItwasMarthawhowenttomeetJesuswhileMaryremainedinthehouse. (John11:20) 2. Martha'sgreattestimonyhereranksequallyasimportantasthatgivenby SimonPeteronanotheroccasion. Bothcontainsimilarlanguage,butMarthaofferedhersunderfarmore difficultcircumstances: 1. Peter'stestimony "AndSimonPeteransweredandsaid,ThouarttheChrist,theSonofthe livingGod"(Matt.16:16). 2. Martha'stestimony "Jesussaiduntoher,Iamtheresurrection,andthelife:hethatbelieveth inme,thoughheweredead,yetshallhelive:Andwhosoeverlivethand believethinmeshallneverdie.Believestthouthis?Shesaithuntohim, Yea,Lord:IbelievethatthouarttheChrist,theSonofGod,whichshould comeintotheworld" (John11:2527). ● Martha'swordstoMaryherearethemostbeneficialandblessedonesa believercangivetoanotherbelieverinthehourofgreatestneed. "Shewentherway,andcalledMaryhersistersecretly,saying,TheMasteris come,andcallethforthee" (John11:28). ● UponmeetingJesus,MarysaidtheexactsamethingMarthahadjustsaid: "ThensaidMarthauntoJesus,Lord,ifthouhadstbeenhere,mybrotherhadnot died…ThenwhenMarywascomewhereJesuswas,andsawhim,shefelldown athisfeet,sayinguntohim,Lord,ifthouhadstbeenhere,mybrotherhadnot died" (John11:21,32). Torephrasethelittlepoem:"Themostuselesswordsoftongueorpen,are thesefourwords,'ITMIGHTHAVEBEEN!'" 20 ● TheaccounttellsusofJesus'sorrowatthistime: "WhenJesusthereforesawherweeping,andtheJewsalsoweepingwhichcame withher,hegroanedinthespirit,andwastroubled.Andsaid,Wherehaveye laidhim?Theysaiduntohim,Lord,comeandsee.Jesuswept" (John11:3335). ● ThiscontainstheshortestverseintheEnglishBible,butinsomewaysitis thelongest.ThisisthefirstofatleastthreeoccasionsonwhichourLordwept. 1. HeweptoverthecityofJerusalem(Luke19:41). 2. HeweptinGethsemane "Whointhedaysofhisflesh,whenhehad offeredupandsupplicationswithstrongcryingandtearsunto himthatwasabletosavehimfromdeath,andwasheardinthathe feared"(Heb.5:7). ● Whatcausedhistears? 1. Heweptbecauseofhistruehumanity(seeHeb.4:1416). 2. Heweptbecauseofthewickedmenhesawaroundhim (seeJohn11:37,46). 3. Hewept(accordingtoanearlyChristiantradition)becauseHewassoon tobringLazarusbackfromtheblissoftothisearthlyvaleof tears! ● TwicewereadofJesusgroaning(John11:33,38).TheGreekwordhereis embrim ,suggesting.Itistranslated"indignation"inMark14:5.Thus,the groaningsofChristmayhaveindicatedhisgriefandangeroverdeathitself,a tragic(andunnecessary)resultof'ssin.(SeeRom.5:12) ● StandingoutsidethetombthatcontainedthebodyofLazarus,Jesusgives somespecificandpointedinstructions: HereweseeanexampleofthatdesiredcooperationGodseeksbetweenthe Saviorandthesoulwinnerinraisingdeadsinnerstonewnessoflife.Jesus issuedthreecommandsinaccomplishingthismiracle.Thefirstandthirdwere directedtowardthefriendsofthecorpse,whilethesecondwasgiventothe corpseitself.Note: 1.
