Welcome to Longlevens AFC Good afternoon and welcome to this Uhlsport Hellenic League fixture against Longlevens Opponents view of the game….. AFC. We hope all from Longlevens who have made the journey from Gloucester enjoy their short stay with us this afternoon and we wish them a safe journey home. When the two Westfields 3 Royal Wootton Bassett Town 2 sides met back in September goals from Danny Langford, Alfie Presley and Gio Wrona gave us a 3-1 away win. When preparing the “Previous Meetings” page for today’s programme it Allpay Park, 4th January 2020 made me realise how much our side has changed in terms of playing personnel since the Westfields extended their lead at the top of the uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division start of the season, with just Caine Bradbury, Gio Wrona, Alfie Presley and Carl Evans from with a hard-fought 3-2 home win over visiting Royal Wootton Bassett. Westfields, who that side that won at Longlevens likely to feature today. Longlevens sit just two points but won 6-1 away at Wootton Bassett in September, found the visitors a much stronger unit five places above us in the table and a win today would see us move above them. and Westfields had to battle all the way to secure the 3 points as the visitors showed far more endeavour and gave a gritty performance. Brimscombe & Thrupp and Westfields Our last home game of 2019 saw us pick up three points from an excellent 4-2 win over Westfields had to overcome the fact that they lost goalkeeper Joe Gorman on the hour and Brimscombe & Thrupp, helped by an impressive display from the evergreen Matt Bulman in without a substitute keeper on the bench Westfields’ defender Kane Kahaki went in goal the Bassett goal. With Declan Lehmann now playing over in the US, Matt took over in goal and had to work hard to assist his defence in securing all 3 points. whilst a replacement for Declan was being sought. A series of impressive saves ensured we ended the year on a high, our goals coming courtesy of Mark Francis (2), Dan Warre and Dev Earlier, Westfields had started the game with a dream start when Ben Miller put a curling Team manager Steve Yeardley who was making a rare First Team appearance this season. shot into the net in only the first minute to give Westfields the lead but the visitors came Unfortunately for Steve his day ended with a one game suspension as he was sent off for storming back when Mark Francis pulled a goal back on the half hour. Another good performance to start the New Year saw us eventually lose 3-2 away at Westfields last Saturday. Given how they comfortably won here at the Gerard Buxton Sports It was slightly against the run of play that Westfields went 3-1 ahead when they burst Ground earlier in the season we ran them really close this time. Development Side Our view of the game….. The Development side under Steve Yeardley started the New Year with an excellent come from behind win against Frome Collegians. Bailey Gallagher equalised for Bassett just before Bassett push leaders all the way in narrow defeat half time and then two second half goals from leading scorer Charlie McCuish plus one from Kabin Rai gave the Development side a 4-1 win over a useful Frome side. Today Steve takes his side to the InfiLED Stadium to play Melksham Town Reserves who sit just above Bassett Westfields 3 Royal Wootton Bassett Town 2 in the table. The following week the Dev side are then in League Cup action when Ludgershall Sports are the visitors to the Gerard Buxton Ground. From The Governor - To The Adver Hellenic League News

ROYAL Wootton Bassett Town manager Sam Collier said he was ‘massively proud’ of his young team despite going down 3-2 away at Hellenic Premier leaders Westfields on Saturday. Collier also stated he felt Bassett would have lost the game comfortably six weeks ago when the club was in a dire run of form. However, the reinvigorated side – who had won four of their previous five – recovered from conceding inside the first minute to almost snatch a deserved point, according to their manager.

Collier said: “We definitely deserved a point from the game – we were all very, very disappointed that we came away empty handed. “We went there with them having not dropped a point at home all season, and with the players and they money that they’ve got. “And we went there with five under-18s and a few senior heads like we have done in the last few games. “We were confident in ourselves, but we knew it was going to be extremely tough. “Then they scored inside the first 30 seconds and you’re thinking: ‘oh no, here we go again’. “But credit to the lads, we absolutely battered them for the next 25 minutes and eventually scored a very good goal from Mark Francis.”

Westfields would go on to restore their lead courtesy of another set-piece goal, but Collier maintained the message to his players at half-time very much centred around the possibility to take something from the game. However, the league leaders scored again after the break following a spell of dominance from their visitors, and the Bassett boss admitted he had fears his team may crumble. Yet, Bassett showed great character to respond and finished the game in the ascendancy, though no equaliser was forthcoming.

“We got back in it with 20 minutes to go, we just couldn’t find that equaliser despite throwing everything at them,” said Collier. “I’m very disappointed with the result, but I’m massively proud with the way that my lads went about their business. “Six weeks ago, we would have lost that comfortably, but now, we’ve pushed the best team in the league all the way. “And it showed how much the win meant to them when they’re blaring out music and banging on walls because they’ve scraped by against us.”

Hellenic Premier Round-up

Saturday 4th January 2020 An injury time goal from Owen James ensured that Ardley United shared the points in their home fixture with Windsor at The Nolan Oils Ground. Tomas Kalinauskas had put visitors Windsor in front but Ardley replied with two goals from Alex Wheeler to go in front. Danny Horscroft then equalised for Windsor before Samir Bajja put them ahead three minutes from time. Just as it looked like Windsor would leave with all three points up popped James for that injury time equaliser to leave it honours even. Binfield were comfortable 4-0 winners against visiting Easington Sports at Stubbs Lane Two goals from Josh Helmore in the opening ten minutes set them on their way. Calam Gallimore then added a third and it remained 3-0 at the break. A fourth four minutes after the restart from Josh Howell rounded off the comfortable win which lifted Binfield into third spot in the table.

In their first home match in 75 days Bishops Cleeve hosted Gloucestershire rivals Brimscombe & Thrupp at Kayte Lane. This was another game that saw a dramatic late goal to ensure the points were shared, this time it was Bishop Cleeve’s Jack Watts with the late equaliser, his second of the game from the penalty spot in the fifth minute of added time. James Campbell and Ed Major with the Brimscombe goals. Burnham started the New Year with a convincing 4-1 win over Brackley Town Saints at The Gore. On target for the home side were Sam Coles, Firas Chniba, Cameron Rohart-Brown and Gavin James, Sam Cherratt with the consolation goal for Brackley.

Today’s visitors Longlevens AFC had an impressive 3-0 win over high flying Fairford Town at Sawmills End. Brad Martin scored for the 20th time this season, Joe Haswell and Dave Merrick with the other Longlevens goals. Another game that saw late drama was at Lydney, where a goal in the third minute of added time from Finnan Hamblett gave Lydney Town a narrow 2-1 win over Shrivenham. All the goals came in the final ten minutes, former Bassett player Antonio Gerrish having put visitors Shrivenham in front before Harry Williams equalised.

Reading City rescued a point against visiting Flackwell Heath at Rivermoor scoring an equaliser five minutes before normal time to secure a 1-1 draw, Stacy Gyan-Boatey with the late goal after Khalid Simmo had put Flackwell ahead. Goals from Jake Baker, Dale Wright, Josh Dillon and Jack Hall gave Virginia Water an important 4-0 victory over struggling Holmer Green at Stag Meadow.

Table toppers Westfields maintained their unbeaten Premier Division run into 2020 with that win over Royal Wootton Bassett Town at Allpay Park. They were given a scare though but finally managed to take all the points on offer with a 3-2 win thanks to goals from Ben Miller, Cameron Peters and Aidan Thomas, Mark Francis with both Bassett goals .

Having hit the bar on fourteen minutes they went Alfie Presley R.A. Nicholas Garden Maintenance 07745 922420 close again with twenty minutes when Max Pollock was played in, but he fired straight at the Bassett keeper Ellis Parker. They finally did break the deadlock on the half-hour mark, Ben Dan Warre Mari Green & Simon Jones Griffths shooting from wide on the left hand side, his shot just making it over the line to give the visitors the lead which they deserved on the balance of play up to that point. The hosts Carl Evans Andy Walduck had the chance to get back on level terms six minutes from the break with a free kick on the edge of the box. However, the free kick from Bailey Gallagher was fired into the wall and Mark Francis when the ball rebounded to Gallagher his header from the edge of the box was held confidently by visiting keeper Josh Bond. Gallagher was not to be denied for long though. The Bradley Pagliaroli Mike Price home side were awarded another free kick, this time Tyrhys Mifsud saw his shot saved by Bond but the ball fell to Gallagher who fired in to make it 1-1 two minutes before the Gio Wrona Mark Smedley interval. There was still time for the same player to hit the cross bar as it remained level at the break. It was a different story in the second half as the interval seemed to knock the Kai Robinson visitors out of their stride and it was the home side who dominated proceedings. Charlie McCuish put them in front for the first time on the hour mark when he fired in from the edge Adam Corcoran Paul Harrison of the box after claims for a penalty were waived aside after Bailey Gallagher went down in the box, the ball falling to McCuish who fired in to the top corner of the net for his eighth of Sam Collier John & Kathy Fellows the season. Three minutes later his tally for the season rose to nine as he got on the end of an excellent cross from Gallagher to make it 3-1 to the home side. The game was made safe Matt Bulman Mark Smedley twenty minutes from time when substitute Kabin Rai scored with a looping header from the Kara Gregory Roger Williamson edge of the box to make the final score 4-1 to Royal Wootton Bassett Town Development. 34 15

Half Time Quiz Answers on Page 36

London Underground Connections Contained in the grid below are 24 squares, each containing the name of a London Underground station. The challenge is to sort them into horizontal lines of four connected stations from the same underground line. By way of a clue the stations on each line start from the left or top of the map and each subsequent station is to the right or below the previous one on that line on the underground map. Only one correct answer with the usual curve balls making it a lot more difficult than it would first seem!
