HONORARY DEGREE DOCTOR OF LAWS ELIZABETH DOLE North Carolinian Elizabeth Dole was sworn in by President George Bush as this nation's 20th Secretary of Labor on January 30, 1989. She guides a federal agency with almost 19,000 employees and a budget of more than $31 billion. Highly respected by both political parties, Mrs. Dole serves as the President's chief adviser on labor and workforce issues, as well as a key economic policy adviser. It has been said that on the Washington political landscape, she stands out as one who is brilliant, vibrant and charming. She is a political insider known for her diligence and dedication to public servce. Since taking office Secretary Dole has advanced a very active agenda. Among many accomplishments, she has: *Successfully negotiated a compromise which resulted in the first increase in the minimum wage since 1981, coupled with a first-ever training wage to ensure that young workers continue to have opportunities for employment. *Issued an ambitious "Call to Quality," which encompasses a number of propo- sals aimed at improving the state of America's workforce. *Proposed legislation aimed at refocusing the Job Training Partnership Act, so that it assists the least skilled and most economically disadvantaged Americans, and provides not just for a job, but also basic skills training, literacy, remedial education, and counseling - a total support system. *Continued her career-long dedication to public safety by making workplace safe- ty a top priority. Secretary Dole proposed and received a 10% increase in the inspec- tion force of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the first increase since 1981. In doing so, Secretary Dole sent a clear and unequivocal message that those responsible for the health and safety of workers must be aware of safety standards and comply with them fully. The National Safety Council recently honored Secretary Dole's commitment to safety by presenting her with their Distinguished Service Award. *Fostered labor-management relations by meeting with union and business leaders to encourage that differences be resolved through cooperation and not confrontation. Her decision to meet with the parties involved in the Pittston Coal Mine strike and to appoint a Supermediator is evidence of her commitment to this principle. *Travelled twice to Poland, where she has designed and is implementing a pack- age which will assist the new Polish government in its transition from a state-con- trolled economy to a free market economy. Prior to becoming Secretary of Labor Mrs. Dole was this nation's longest-serving Secretary of Transportation serving from February 1983 until October 1987. During her service as Secretary of Transportation the United States enjoyed the safest years in its history in all three major transportation areas - rail, air, and highway. Secretary Dole's public service experience also includes five years as a Federal Trade Commissioner and two years as Assistant to President Reagan for Public Liaison. Secretary Dole was graduated with distinction from Duke University, where she was president of student government and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She received her law degree from Harvard Law School and a master's degree in education and government from Harvard University. A native of Salisbury, North Carolina, Mrs. Dole was named by the Gallup Poll in 1988 as one of the world's ten most admired women. Clemson University holds her and her achievements in the highest regard, and it is a special privilege to honor her with the awarding of this honorary degree. ,, HONORARY DEGREE DOCTOR OF LAWS WILLIAM STATES LEE Bill Lee, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Duke Power Company, is a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, and grandson of Duke Power's first chief engineer. We have been supported throughout the process by The Evening Leader and also www.wrexham.com, individuals have donated to the auction which means every item has been gifted to us. Both local and national businesses have also supported our cause. Companies as large as Boots, and also as small as mad4movies in the market, have donated to our raffles. Thank you one and all!! Stu Roberts, one of the organisers explains, “It all started when my 10 year old daughter overheard a conversation about a group of friends having a whip round for Jacko. Due to having to give up work we knew that he would be short of cash until he beats the cancer, and we wanted to help. Over the next few days Megan compiled a list of fundraising events that she wanted to arrange. So far she has arranged a cake sale at Ysgol Bryn Collen and raised just shy of eighty pounds for Macmillan Cancer Support.
