Buddhist Women and Polygamy Issue in Indonesia By: Kustiani (Article was presented for the 2nd IABU Conference, 30-3 June 2012, in Thailand) Background Marriage is a human‟s phenomenon that commonly practiced since the ancient civilizations regardless geography, religion, race and social classes. Marriage in the Vulgar Latin is marītācum and in the Latin is marītātus, meaning 'to wed, marry and give in marriage'.1 Now days, marriage is defined as 1. a formal, usually legally recognized, agreement between a man and a woman making them husband and wife; 2. a ceremony at which a couple are married.2 Marriage of the first meaning is meant in this article and it is not the second one. There are many kinds of marriage which have been influenced by the religious, social and philosophical viewpoints. Generally, there are three kinds of marriage, namely polygamy, monogamy and group marriage. Monogamy is the practice or custom of being married to only one person at a time.3 This is commonly practice in the society and of course this type of marriage can be seen everywhere. But, group marriage is quite rare to be seen. Group marriage involves more than one member of each sex. They live together by sharing husband and wife, and responsibility in taking care of wealth and children.4 However, these two types of marriage are not the purpose of this article. The main purpose of this article is to discuss and examine the third type of marriage: polygamy. The term polygamy is defined in two ways: 1. the custom of having more than one wife at the same time;5 2.

  • The Mythological Worldview of the Contemplative Site Nagara Padang
Chapter 18. Sunda 1 – The affirmative life The mythological worldview of the contemplative site of Nagara Padang, West Java, Indonesia by Stephanus Djunatan 2 Abstract . The study of indigenous myth such as the one at the rocky contemplative site of Nagara Padang, Gunung Padang, West Java can be a useful starting point for the comparative study of human wisdom. After discussing the cultural history setting and providing a sketch of the landscape, I will delineate the teaching myth and its meaning. I will analyze this meaning using an etic approach on the teaching myth. The analysis proposes the account of affirmative life as the indigenous ontological con- ception of life. This discussion of the comparative studies of human wisdom will conclude by compar- ing the indigenous ontological conception and the Dao De Ching’s ontological conception. An open ending is an invitation to maintain intercultural dialogue. 1. Introduction In today’s era of globalisation, intercultural encounter studies of indigenous mytholo- gies seek to offer a comparative understanding of human civilizations, highlighting the interconnection of contemporary global life. One form in which mythology can manifest itself is as a narrative form depicting how life began and where it is heading, thus illuminating the spiral process of life as locally understood. This is the kind of mythology that is told at the Sundanese site of Nagara Padang, West Java, and which presumably dates back to the pre-Hindu and Buddhist era in the Indonesian Archipelago. The believed meditating place of the historically- legendary King of the Sundanese kingdom of Galuh, Prabu Premana Dikusumah 1 The term ‘Sunda’ used here in the title is not intended to refer to the vast land between Asia and Aus- tralia, or to the Sundanese people and culture.

  • Sundanese Manuscripts : Their Existence, Functions, and Contents
Sundanese Manuscripts : Their Existence, Functions, and Contents Edi S. EKADJATI (Visiting Professor at ILCAA, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies) (Professor at Padjadjaran University, INDONESIA) In Indonesia two forms of writing tradition exist, namely inscriptions and manu- scripts. The former were written on stone and metal, while the latter on palm leaf, bam- boo, and paper. The texts of inscriptions are generally brief containing only of a small number of lines stating a royal decree or announcement, or commemorating of a royal or religious event, while the texts of the manuscripts are usually lengthy, even numbering to thousands of pages containing a variety of expressions, thoughts, experiences, and ac- counts. Some regions in Indonesia have produced manuscripts, but others have only oral traditions. Tanah Sunda or West Java (see: maps) has produced both of the traditions. Inscriptions began to be made in mid-5th century (Vogel, 1925; Poerbatjaraka, 1952), while the time of the beginning of written manuscripts is still unknown. The main reason for this is the different materials used. Inscriptions are made on such materials as stone or metal which are more resistant to decay and weather, while manuscripts are made on leaves which are vulnerable. According to written sources of the 16th century (Atja, 1968; Atja & Saleh Danasasmita, 1981, Noorduyn, 1971), the tradition of writing manuscripts in Tanah Sunda had existed long before the 16th century, dating as far back as the times of the Kingdoms of Sunda and Galuh (8th century). Nevertheless, on the basis of the date stated in the texts, the oldest extant Sundanese manuscript dates back to the 14th century (Krom, 1915), and the writing of Sundanese manuscripts continued to be done until the end of the 20th century.
