Königin Hetepheres H., eine Enkelin Hetepheres' 1., wird allgemein mit drei Grabanlagen in Giza in Verbindung gebracht: mit den Mastabas G 7110-7120, G 7350 und G 7530-7540, die alle östlich der Cheopspyramide liegen I (Abb. 1). In welcher der drei Anlagen die Köni• gin tatsächlich bestattet war und warum sie mit diesen Gräbern in Verbindung gebracht wird, beruht vor allem auf den Rekonstruktionen von George A. Reisner, dem Ausgräber 2 der Nekropole G 7000 . Seine Versuche, die Geschichte der Gizanekropole anhand der archäologischen Befunde, der Architektur, Reliefs, Inschriften und der (von ihm rekonstru ierten) Familienbeziehungen zu erklären und in weiterer Folge damit auch eine Geschichte der 4. Dynastie zu entwerfen, bilden bis heute das Fundament für jene Epoche. An den An fang sei daher eine Zusammenfassung der Reisnerschen Ergebnisse und Rekonstruktionen gestellt, die mit unterschiedlichen Abwandlungen Eingang in die ägyptologische Literatur gefunden haben. Decorum was a social force that restricted and defined the ways in which individuals could engage in material displays of identity and religious practice. Four-hundred and ninety-four votive stelae were examined in an attempt to identify trends and patters on self- display and religious practice. Each iconographic and textual element depicted on the stelae was treated as a variable which was entered into a database and statistically analyzed to search for trends of self-display. The analysis of the stelae revealed the presence of multiple social groups at Asyut. By examining the forms of capital displayed, it was possible to identify these social groups and reconstruct the social hierarchy of the site. This analysis demonstrated how the religious system was largely appropriated by elite men as a stage to engage in individual competitive displays of identity and capital as a means of reinforcing their profession and position in society and the II patronage structure. -

1. CHARACTERS Pharaoh is essentially an “upstairs/downstairs” story, featuring a wide array of charac- ters of widely disparate social circumstances. The “upstairs” stories feature individuals in positions of power--priests, kings and nota- bles—many of which are based on actual historical figures who lived in the 18th Dynasty of the New Kingdom Era (see italicized). Conversely, the “downstairs” story is driven by commoners, reflecting the prosaic lives of the average citizen—bureaucrats, soldiers, laborers and criminals—and based upon the latest research that is even now painting a new, utterly compelling picture of daily life in ancient Egypt. PRINCIPAL CHARACTERS: HATSHEPSUT Hatshepsut was the daughter of Thut- mose the First and Queen Ahmose. When she had come of age, her father arranged her marriage to her half-brother, Thut- mose the Second, and was the power be- hind the throne during his rule. Upon the death of her husband, Hatshep- sut believed her right to rule superseded Thutmose the Third’s due to her direct, “uncorrupted” lineage. Therefore, once she was appointed Thutmose the Third’s Regent, Hatshepsut assumed all of the regalia and symbols of royal office and insisted on being referred to in contempo- rary records as “His Majesty.” Hatshepsut, late-20s, is an extremely intelli- gent and capable woman who believes that she alone possesses the qualifications neces- sary to rule as King of Egypt. Upon her hus- band’s death, however, she is left powerless when his designated heir, Thutmose the Third, assumes the throne 2. HATSHEPSUT (CONT’D) and his trusted Vizier, Ahmose Pen-Nekhbet, is appointed the boy’s Regent. -

It does not, however, include purely literary, ritual and funerary texts. This book presents the hieroglyphic texts from the long, prosperous and relatively well-sourced reign of Ramesses II (c.1279–1213 bc). The previous volume (II) made available the ‘official’ and royal records issued or engraved in the king’s name, personifying (as he did) the effective government of ancient Egypt for his time. Here, by contrast, we have records that concern pri- marily, or were left us by, the king’s subjects at all levels of society, from viziers and viceroys at the head of the royal administration (along with priesthoods and the military) down through society’s echelons to the workmen who laboured in the royal tombs in Western Thebes (based in Deir el-Medina village) and the humble folk that served them. For Deir el-Medina, both collective (‘official’) records and the mementos of individuals and families have been kept to- gether, not to split up data that in effect belong together. -

Kitchen This study is in two parts: (i) Egypt as a source of illustration, primarily visual, serving as illuminative background to the biblical text; (ii) Egyptian (and allied) documentation as an exemplary (even, admonitory) paradigm in considering historical methodology and the Old Testament. I Illustration 1. Visual Illustration. Clearly, ancient (and sometimes modern) Egypt is the logical place in which to look for possible illustrations of those passages of the Old Testament set in Egypt or concerned with Egypt. One thinks immediately of the Joseph narrative and the account of the Exodus, besides later and briefer episodes. It is relatively easy to leaf through the publications of brightly-painted or carved Egyptian private tomb-chapels of the Old, Middle and New Kingdoms, c. 2600-1070 BC (later material being sparser), and find scenes and details which, in principle, exhibit items identical in subject-matter with features mentioned in the Old Testament. However, this tends to be done on rather haphazard lines, without much regard for the relative dates of the parallels adduced not to mention the enormous time-gap between the biblical text and modern parallels. Such haphazard selection of illustrations can be found in major modern compendia.1 While it is true that there are vast continuities across time, both during antiquity and from antiquity to the present, yet it is surely preferable to match as closely as possible, in time, the biblical and external data.
