2013/14 Annual Report Mission 2013/14 ANNUAL REPORT MISSION The Royal Winnipeg Ballet enriches the human experience by teaching, creating and performing outstanding dance. VISION Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet will be renowned as an organization that teaches, creates and performs outstanding dance. The RWB will be embraced in Winnipeg and beyond. We will be seen as ambassadors for dance, for our city, our province and our country. The RWB will be a dynamic member of the world dance community. Our work will reflect passion, exuberance, honesty, excellence and integrity. We will take our place among the premier dance companies of the world. COVER PHOTO: Réjean Brandt Photography Amanda Green 2013/14 proved to be an exciting season at Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet. From the World Premiere of The Handmaid’s Tale, with the opening performance attended by Margaret Atwood herself, to a visit from Her Royal Highness, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, to the return to the stage of iconic prima ballerina, Evelyn Hart during Mixed Programme, and many of our community outreach activities, we strive to continue our commitment to enriching the human experience by teaching, creating and performing outstanding dance. During the 2013/14, our world-class Professional Division School attracted students from across North America and around the globe. Our students worked tirelessly to present the year end showcases, In Concert and On the Edge, and the shows were testaments to the calibre of training and talent of our students. We are proud of our 2014 Ballet Academic Program graduates, whose dedication and hard work will help them as they continue on to promising dance careers. The RWB School Recreational Division continues to grow as it attracts students from across Winnipeg and surrounding communities. The wide range of programming offered allows students of all ages to embrace their love of dance. LEADERSHIP MESSAGE This past year we faced many challenges both in our local marketplace and on our tours. We acknowledge that we are in a constantly changing environment for the arts but we are committed to finding ways to carry our organization successfully into the future. We are thankful for our funders, government partners, sponsors and donors whose generosity and support has allowed the RWB to exist and grow over the years. We are especially thankful to our audience, both at home and around the world, whose appreciation of ballet and our organization has brought us to where we are today. “Canada’s oldest ballet looks new all over again.” – Dance International Magazine André Lewis Jeff Herd Arlene Minkhorst David Reid Artistic Director Executive Director School Director Chair RWB Board of Directors 3 THE STAFF OF THE ROYAL WINNIPEG BALLET André Lewis Artistic Director Jeff Herd Executive Director ARTISTIC Artistic Director...............................................................André Lewis PRODUCTION Music Director & Conductor.................................Tadeusz Biernacki Director of Production............................................Michael Freeman Senior Ballet Master...............................................Johnny W. • Papa Haydn Soundtracks Live Valentine's Special
Photographer: Lisa Marie Mazzucco Bella Hristova, violin PAPA HAYDN SOUNDTRACKS LIVE wso.ca I 204-949-3999 VALENTINE’S SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE WSO BOARD As the New Year begins, let me wish you all a very happy and healthy year. And, a musical year. What better way is there to bring happiness into your life than with music, especially the music of our own, fabulous WSO? I would like to introduce myself as the new President of the Board of Directors. This is my sixth year as a member of the Board and my first as President. Music has always been a part of my life. My tastes are eclectic, ranging from “old-school”rock and roll to folk to jazz and opera, and, of course, classical. Giving back to my community is also something that is important in my life. So, when, I was asked to join the Board of the Symphony, in 2011, I didn’t hesitate. To be chosen, this past September, as President of one of the jewels of Winnipeg’s renowned cultural scene is a great honour. The Board has two principal roles. One is to provide oversight of the management of the Orchestra to ensure that it continues to operate. The fact that, in a few weeks, it will be seventy years since the incorporation of the WSO attests to the success of past and present Boards in this goal. The second responsibility is to play a significant role in ensuring financial stability. The WSO depends on three sources of income: ticket sales, government grants and charitable donations. With much competition for entertainment dollars, there is a limit to the amount to be raised through ticket sales. With so many demands on public resources, the same is true of government funding.
