Annual Repor T 1 ANNUAL REPORT 2012/13 MISSION The Royal Winnipeg Ballet enriches the human experience by teaching, creating and performing outstanding dance. VISION Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet will be renowned as an organization that teaches, creates and performs outstanding dance. The RWB will be embraced in Winnipeg and beyond. We will be seen as ambassadors for dance, for our city, our province and our country. The RWB will be a dynamic member of the world dance community. Our work will reflect passion, exuberance, honesty, excellence and integrity. We will take our place among the premier dance companies of the world. 2012/13 proved once again that Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet is committed to enriching the human experience by teaching, creating and performing outstanding dance both at home and across North America. We had resounding success at the prestigious Jacob’s Pillow International Dance Festival, our ambitious touring schedule and our many outreach activities that have allowed us a heightened connectivity with communities on a local, national and international scale. As we continue to operate in an uncertain global economy each season is not without its challenges; however, our energy and creativity continue to go undiminished as we strive for the highest artistic standards in everything we do as an organization. As we reflect on the past year we feel truly energized by the great achievements of the season beginning with the Canadian Premiere of choreographic legend Twyla Tharp’s The Princess & The Goblin, and featuring Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty and a lavish reprise of Moulin Rouge® – The Ballet. In 2012/13, the RWB School Professional Division attracted students and teachers from all over the globe. Under the guidance of our committed faculty and distinguished guest teachers, our students worked tirelessly in pursuit of their goals. Our year-end showcases, In Concert and On The Edge were testaments to the world-class training and boundless talent of our Professional Division students. This year’s graduates from both the Ballet Academic Program, Aspirant Program and the Teacher Training Program have gone on to achieve successful careers both in Winnipeg and around the world. The RWB School Recreational Division continues to expand its programming, attracting an even greater number of students from the city and communities outside Winnipeg. LEADERSHIP MESSAGE As we begin planning for our 75th Anniversary celebration commencing in 2014, we wish to thank the many people who have helped us remain Canada’s premiere ballet company for many years. Our heartfelt appreciation goes to our Company dancers and our students, for their continued dedication to artistic excellence. All those who work ‘in the wings’, including the RWB Board of Directors, staff, faculty, crew, volunteers, Alumni Association, Women’s Committee and to the many others whose commitment and belief in the RWB allows it to grow and prosper from one year to the next. We give thanks to our funders, government partners and sponsors and donors, whose generosity and support allow the RWB to continue its quest to produce world-class artists and art. And, finally, to our audience, both at home and around the world, whose genuine appreciation of the ballet challenges us to reach for even greater heights of artistic innovation and excellence. • Project Folder: Honour Without Courage
Project by Levi Orta Montreal, 2013 In Quebec, 85% of the population rejects the monarchy as a model of representation for Canada; the monarchy justifies itself as a cultural tradition of the country. I am interested in linking the concepts of “representation” in art and “representation” in politics, triggering a perversion of both. The project uses a fictional event where I save the life of a woman disguised as Queen Elizabeth II in order to apply for the “Star of Courage”, a decoration awarded by the representative of the monarchy in Canada by order of the Queen. The whole application process, the proofs of the heroic action, and the expected granting of the medal are part of the project. It is one representation that meets another, the realities of art and politics dissolving into each other and becoming accomplices. …
