5 TWYLA THARP’S THE PRINCESS & THE GOBLIN

Our Fairy Tale Fantasy season opened October 17 – 21, 2012 with the Canadian Premiere of Twyla Tharp’s The Princess & The Goblin. Legendary choreographer Twyla Tharp chose the RWB and Atlanta Ballet as partners to co-create her newest full-length ballet. The magical work, which premiered in Atlanta in February, 2012, received high praise from the international media, including the New York Times who called it, “enchanting and funny… a powerful image of love.”

Set to the music of Franz Schubert and original sounds by composer Richard Burke, the ballet, based on the Victorian children’s fantasy novel of the same name by George MacDonald, underwent significant revisions before premiering in Winnipeg to an enthusiastic audience. For its Canadian premiere the talented RWB Company was joined by celebrated American Ballet Theatre’s Principal dancer Paloma Herrera and award-winning dancer and choreographer John Selya.

Ms Tharp’s decision to include children in her magical work – the first time she had ever done so – made the RWB a natural choice for The Princess & The Goblin because of our international

WINNIPEG SEASON reputation for excellence at both the school and Company level. More than 20 children from the RWB School were cast in the critically-acclaimed work and Tharp credits working with the students as one of the highlights of the project.

Twyla Tharp’s The Princess & The Goblin represented a rare opportunity for artists from Canada, the United States and around the world to work together under the leadership of one of the world’s most influential choreographers. 6 NUTCRACKER

Festive holiday favourite, Nutcracker returned to the Centennial Concert Hall for seven family- friendly performances over the holiday season, beginning December 20, 2012.

Audiences were treated to even more holiday magic than usual when the RWB Company was joined on stage by Winnipeg-based Ukrainian dance troupe Rusalka. The group performed to resounding applause during Act II, when Clara and the Prince travel to the Sugar Plum Fairy’s Kingdom and saw dances from across the globe. Rusalka had previously performed with the RWB in productions of Swan Lake and Romeo and Juliet. This collaboration resulted in a Hydro Building, and Library Readings at the truly “classic” ballet, which has become an Millennium Library, hosted by Corps de Ballet audience favourite for young and old. RWB first dancer, Elizabeth Lamont. premiered The Sleeping Beauty in 1992.

Nutcracker Photo: Bruce Monk RWB later re-staged the production with new costumes and sets, and the Company’s new version of The Sleeping Beauty had its world premiere in Winnipeg in March 2002.

The work has since become one of RWB’s most revered classical ballets. Its lavish sets, lyrically poignant melodies and beautiful costumes, originally created by costume designer Shannon Lovelace and RWB Wardrobe Director Anne Armit, have been cherished by audiences of all ages since its premiere. Ballet fans were treated to two fabulous pre-show events: Girls Night Out, Beauty Awakens Event and The Sleeping Beauty Princess Party that engaged existing audiences and brought in new ones.

7 MOULIN ROUGE® -THE BALLET

RWB rounded out its dynamic season with the spectacular story ballet Moulin Rouge® - The Ballet from May 1-5, 2013.

The run had a special poignancy, as it marked the farewell performance of beloved RWB Principal dancer Vanessa Lawson. Celebrated choreographer Jorden Morris’ ballet, which has enjoyed wildly successful tours across North America, was enhanced for its return to Winnipeg with enthralling new scenes. WINNIPEG SEASON

Morris, whose other works include Peter Pan and The Doorway: Scenes from Leonard Cohen, expanded the ballet to include the solo for Lawson as well as new scenes set to dynamic French period music to further enhance the drama in the ballet.

Since its sold out run in Winnipeg in 2009, Moulin Rouge® - The Ballet has been applauded by over 110,000 people in more than 35 cities across North America. Due to its popularity, Morris has been invited to restage the production at Atlanta Ballet and Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre.

The ballet’s striking costumes and the extravagant Parisian scenes created by Andrew Beck did not disappoint an audience that was holding its breath until the final drama played out.

This classic was performed to more than 4,700 people in the region. One of the RWB’s greatest strengths is the ability to tour works like The Sleeping Beauty into smaller communities and venues. It is an important part of our mandate to build and acquire works that will allow us to visit a diverse array

of communities, and although modifications AND TOURING SPECIAL PERFORMANCES to the sets and number of dancers on stage had to be undertaken to fit into these locations, the tour was an integral part of our 2012/13 season as it allowed us to reach out to smaller communities and share our high calibre art form. 9 JACOB’S PILLOW AND CHICAGO TOUR

BALLET UNMASKED

The RWB held its annual fundraising gala, Ballet Unmasked, on April 20, 2013 at the Delta Winnipeg. More than 225 guests enjoyed a four-course dinner and mingled with RWB dancers. The highlight of the evening was an exclusive performance featuring Kevät choreographed by RWB dancer Yosuke Mino, the light hearted Pas D’Action, and Tendancies, choreographed and performed by Professional Division students. The event continued with an energetic After Party that had dancers and guests hitting the dance floor until the wee hours. A vibrant live and silent auction helped the 2012/13 Gala raise over $102,000. Thank you to Event Sponsor, TD Bank Group, and to our many other sponsors, supporters and donors.
