Director/Choreogr Apher/Performer/Instr Uctor B r e n d a G o r l i c k BRENDA GORLICK BIO - DIRECTOR/CHOREOGRAPHER/PERFORMER/INSTRUCTOR Brenda Gorlick has been involved in the Performing Arts world for over 35 years in many aspects of the business. As a performer, she has acted, sung and danced her way across Canada, the U.S. and parts of Europe including the acclaimed Stratford Festival and the Banff Centre of Fine Arts. She received the Award of Excellence from Winnipeg Studio Theatre for her dedication to the arts and is was named to the Wall of Fame at Rainbow Stage in 2014. Brenda serves as Associate Artistic director for Winnipeg Studio Theatre - a cutting edge professional musical theatre company which has produced hit shows such as Spring Awakening, Altar Boyz and the world premiere of Hersteria! WST also offers a training wing for youth and adults: StudioWorks and Adults Only Ensemble. The troupe has performed at numerous events including Winnipeg Fringe Festival, Words and Deeds Gala, WSO's Adventures in Music series and DisneyWorld's Magic Music Days in Florida. In 2013, Ms. Gorlick appeared as Phyllis in Dry Cold Production's Follies as part of Sondheimfest and Miss Andrew (the nasty governess) in Rainbow Stage's Mary Poppins. Selected performer credits include: MTC/Theatre Calgary's co-production of Evita, Rainbow Stage's Wizard of Oz in the coveted role of Wicked Witch of the West, Jennyanydots/Gumbie in Cats and her all-time favourite: Anita in the Banff Centre's West Side Story. In film, Ms. Gorlick portrayed the principal role of Phyllis Flatow opposite Shirley Maclaine in the movie of the week, Hell On Heels: The Mary Kay Project. She acted as Assistant Dance Crew Liaison for Miramax Productions feature flick: Shall We Dance starring Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez , and choreographed one episode of Murdoch Mysteries. Ms Gorlick had the great challenge of creating the opening and closing ceremonies for the 1999 Pan Am Games , the biggest choreographic event Winnipeg has seen. She has also choreographed ceremonies for the 2003 Western Canada Summer Games in Selkirk, Manitoba and the Canada Games in Brandon. She has been involved in over 200 productions including every theatre in Winnipeg over the past 35 years. Selected credits include: Hamlet starring Keanu Reeves (Manitoba Theatre Centre), Strike! the Musical (Danny Schur Productions), A Year with Frog and Toad (Manitoba Theatre for Young People), Funny Girl (Winnipeg Jewish Theatre), Salome (Manitoba Opera Association), Le Train (Cercle Molière) and Altar Boyz (Winnipeg Studio Theatre/Prairie Theatre Exchange). Ms Gorlick has worked as director choreographer on numerous commercial projects including the SMD Foundation Galas , Culture Days Manitoba Flash Mobs, Manitoba Hydro's Festival of Lights Parades, the Canadian Artistic Gymnastic Championships Gala and the Forks production for Queen Elizabeth II's Royal Visit. As an Artist in the Schools, Brenda has created projects throughout the province for over 20 years. She also serves as the Manitoba rep. for the DTRC (Dancer Transition Resource Centre ) Brenda is a guest professor in dance and musical theatre for the Universities of Winnipeg and Manitoba. Last but certainly not least she is "mom" to two boys- Jordie and Taj and partner to Victor. Apart from being great fun and featuring terrific performances, this is a profound story. At its centre is Horton the Elephant’s assertion that "a person’s a person no matter how small". Obviously, these are words to live by. They are also a call to action for young people – to think and care about those who are sometimes forgotten or unseen. We hope Seussical inspires all audience members, young and not so young, to be conscious of the impact of their actions. Think how much better the world would be. To quote another song from the show "Oh the thinks you can think – if you’re willing to try..." Our show runs through the Holidays with public performances every day between December 27th and 31st. Most of us say “that wasn’t too bad, at least it is a dry cold.” For the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the start of spring brings us much enthusiasm about the season offerings for the coming year, but it also gives us extra appreciation for the concerts we are able to attend in the spring. I am looking forward to hearing Gwen Hoebig and Karl Stobbe perform Bach’s Double Concerto followed by the monumental Bruckner’s 9th Symphony. The partnership with Rainbow Stage continues with a wonderful performance of A Chorus Line, we perform great choral masterpieces at St. Boniface Cathedral in recognition of the anniversary of the diocese, and we welcome exciting young pianist Luca Buratto to the WSO. And, of course, we look forward to a performance with the irrepressible Al Simmons, our local genius. What else can we anticipate in the months to come? Well, the annual Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra Spring Gala on April 26 will move to the Centennial Concert Hall and Alloway Hall this year. The event will be connected to an exclusive performance of the orchestra and cast members from Cirque de la symphonie. Gala events are wonderful ways to celebrate as a community of WSO supporters, but attending the gala is not the only way to support the legacy of symphonic music in Winnipeg.You can enter the Symphony Sweepstakes, make a donation to the WSO Friends or Maestro’s Circle Programs, or remember the WSO in your estate planning.

And, a musical year.What better way is there to bring happiness into your life than with music, especially the music of our own, fabulous WSO? I would like to introduce myself as the new President of the Board of Directors.This is my sixth year as a member of the Board and my first as President. Music has always been a part of my life. My tastes are eclectic, ranging from “old-school”rock and roll to folk to jazz and opera, and, of course, classical. Giving back to my community is also something that is important in my life. So, when, I was asked to join the Board of the Symphony, in 2011, I didn’t hesitate.To be chosen, this past September, as President of one of the jewels of Winnipeg’s renowned cultural scene is a great honour.
