Rasword Puzzle Dance Can’t Nice Without We A Glossary of Jamaican Sound System Terminology 3 4 5 6 by Tracy “Too Dread” Moore RAS WORD The Reggae Shack host on KTHX 100.1 FM Reno, NV www.myradiox.com PUZZLE 7 The live presentation of reggae music in Jamaica has its roots 8 9 2 in the sound system, an open-air offering of the latest recordings 10 by a sound system crew, which was always much more than 11 the mere playing of records. Creative use of sound effects and tension-building interruptions and start-overs helped build a 12 frenzied vibe. Nearly all notable Jamaican reggae vocalists refined their abilities and made their name through sound system 14 service, from originators like U-Roy, Dennis Alcapone and Big 13 15 Youth to later legends like Yellowman, Capleton and Anthony B. See if you can come up with the terms referring to the 16 17 participants, techniques, styles, vocal commands and atmosphere of the Jamaican-style sound system and the foundations of today’s 1 authentic live reggae performance. Too Dread is Reno’s original reggae radio DJ (The Kingston Jam, KUNR-FM, 18 1988-98), who has seen the JA sound system stylee up close over seven journeys to JA, has promoted several live reggae shows in Reno, NV since Photo by Tracy Moore the late ‘80s and has played in a number of reggae bands in the Reno area over the last 20 years. Lila Iké | Biography Lila Ike (pronounced Lee-lah Eye-kay) is on the brink of stardom. The 26-year-old Jamaican songbird has an edge and ease in her voice that creates an immediate gravitational pull with her listener, fusing contemporary reggae with elements of soul, hip-hop and dancehall. The free-spirited, easy-going singer has already released a handful of velvety smooth songs through In.Digg.Nation Collective, a record label and talent pool for Jamaican creatives, founded by reggae star Protoje. The ExPerience will be Lila Iké’s debut EP for Six Course/RCA Records in a new partnership with In.Digg.Nation Collective. She breathes a delicate testimony of love, infatuation, and spiritual guidance in the 7-track release out this Spring. The EP is padded with previously-released songs such as “Where I’m Coming From” and “Second Chance.” Pivoting from the singles that earned her international acclaim in 2018 and 2019, Lila Iké unveils playful seduction on “I Spy,” her first release of 2020 produced by Izy Beats (the hitmaker behind Koffee’s “Toast”). Beckoning with innocent flirtation over soft guitar licks, Lila in a sweet falsetto sings, “I spy I spy, that you see something you might like. Won’t you come over if you really mean it.” The layers to Lila are in full bloom as she opens up about the daily pressures she faces through her interaction with people and wanting peace of mind in “Solitude” — . On “Stars Align,” Lila flips the instrumental from Protoje’s “Bout Noon” into an anthem about falling in love through the metaphor of making music.

  • Jah Stitch, Pioneering Reggae Vocalist, Dies Aged 69
‘Original raggamuffin’ Jah Stitch, pioneering reggae vocalist, dies aged 69 Sound system toaster, DJ and selector, known for his understated delivery and immaculate dress died in Kingston David Katz Thu 2 May 2019 15.03 BSTLast modified on Fri 3 May 2019 09.47 BST FROM: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2019/may/02/original-raggamu ffin-jah-stitch-pioneering-reggae-vocalist-dies-aged-69 Jah Stitch on Princess Street, downtown Kingston in 2011. Photograph: Mark Read The Jamaican reggae vocalist Jah Stitch died in Kingston on Sunday aged 69, following a brief illness. Although not necessarily a household name abroad, the “original raggamuffin” was a sound system toaster and DJ who scored significant hits in the 70s, later working as an actor and appearing in an ad campaign for Clarks shoes. Born Melbourne James in Kingston in 1949, he grew up with an aunt in a rural village in St Mary, northern Jamaica, since his teenage mother lacked the financial means to care for him. He later joined her in bustling Papine, east Kingston, but conflict with his father-in-law led him to join a community of outcasts living in a tenement yard in the heart of the capital’s downtown – territory aligned with the People’s National party and controlled by the notorious Spanglers gang, which James became affiliated with aged 11. As ska and rock steady gave way to the new reggae style on the nascent Kingston music scene, young James became a regular fixture of sound system dances. He drew his biggest inspiration from the Studio One selections presented by Prince Rough on Sir George the Atomic, based in Jones Town, and the microphone skills of Dennis Alcapone on El Paso, based further west at Waltham Park Road.

  • The Riddim Method: Aesthetics, Practice, and Ownership in Jamaican Dancehall1
Popular Music (2006) Volume 25/3. Copyright © 2006 Cambridge University Press, pp. 447–470 doi:10.1017/S0261143006000997 Printed in the United Kingdom The riddim method: aesthetics, practice, and ownership in Jamaican dancehall1 PETER MANUEL† and WAYNE MARSHALL‡ †127 Park Ave, Leonia, NJ 07605, USA ‡88 Holworthy Street, Cambridge, MA 02138, USA Abstract The Jamaican system of recording and performance, from the 1950s to the present, constitutes a distinctive approach to notions of composition, originality and ownership. Emerging from a tradition of live performance practice mediated by (and informing) sound recordings, the relative autonomy of riddims and voicings in the Jamaican system challenges conventional ideas about the integrity of a song and the degree to which international copyright law applies to local conceptions, as enshrined in decades of practice, of musical materials as public domain. With the spread of the ‘riddim method’ to the sites of Jamaican mass migration, as evidenced by similar approaches in hip hop, reggaeton, drum’n’bass and bhangra, reggae’s aesthetic system has found adherents among artists and audiences outside of Jamaica. This paper maps out, through historical description, ethnographic data, and musical analysis, the Jamaican system as a unique and increasingly influential approach to music-making in the digital age. The advent of commercial, mass-mediated popular music genres in the twentieth century has contributed to the spread, in many music cultures worldwide, of a certain conventional ‘mainstream’ form of song, comprising an original, autonomous and reproducible entity with a relatively unique integration of lyrics, melody and chordal accompaniment. In mainstream Western music culture, the thirty-two-bar AABA structure, perhaps repeated twice or thrice with some sort of variation, constituted a quintessential type of this conventional song form.
